The B-squod, consisting mainly of juniors, carried away the City Championship in football. Many junior athletes gained invaluable experience as they participated in all sports as members of Varsity teams. When West won the much-coveted Vice-Presidency of the Minnesota Association of Student Councils, the junior class assumed the responsibility of performing the duties of this office. Juniors planned and carried out an exciting and fun-filled Sno-Day. Experiences such as these have prepared them to assume the responsibilities of a successful senior class. Sophomores West's world was presented to the sophomores on their first day. A new school, new faces, and new subjects created experiences and opportunities. Club membership increased and the sophomore athletic teams were well-manned os the rush to join began. Many sophomores performed so proficiently in their sport that they were promoted to the Varsity teams, where they carried their sophomore banner with pride. They displayed their zest ond enthusiasm by rooting vigorously at the games and campaigning loyally for various school elections. Entering whole-heartedly in the spirit ond festivities of Homecoming, the sophomores set a record for attendance at the dance. With a variety of talent and imagination, they concocted the catchy slogan, Sophs are supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. and presented their entertaining ballet skit to a delighted audience. Doorways to the future are never closed, but are constantly in use by successive generations. For three years we hove been traveling up the steps leading to these doorways. Now we are ot their threshold. Beyond us lie challenge, opportunity and the unknown,- behind us, the efforts of preparation which the school has bestowed upon us. These efforts —organizations, sports, and scholastic struggles —have not been in vain. From them we have learned human nature and fair play. But more important, we have learned how to live in a human society. Soon we shall be opening these doors to tomorrow. We shall be able to face these new and exciting challenges with preparedness. And we shall be able to proudly and efficiently build the future in which we shall live. For this we have West High to thank. SENIOR BOARD-BOTTOM ROW: N. Anderson. Mr Baxter, M Rider, L. Rosenfield. Going into the game. West lacked confidence, but by no means enthusiasm. The Cowboys, with an advantage in first downs, 19-14, and total yardage were the stronger team despite the heartbreaking loss of V3-7. Washburn and West, both with established ground attacks, clashed at Parade Stadium the following Friday night. Throughout the four quarters. West banged at Washburn's goal after an early score by the Millers. Coming within three yards of scoring, the Cowboys missed their opportunity when a near-touchdown pass fell incomplete in the end zone. After this bitter defeat, the team lacked both confidence and spirit due to consecutive losses to Vocational, Central, Roosevelt, and Henry. South invaded West on Homecoming Day. The Cowboys were jubilant despite their previous record. South scored first and led 7-0 at half time. After intermission the Cowboys received the ball and drove seventy yards. Captain Jeff Ohm barreled in from the eight yard line to knot the score 7-7. A long run broke the back of the team and proved to be South's winning drive as they dampened West's Homecoming festivities. The Cowboys went down in defeat 28-14. Throughout the season potent halfback, Joe Simon, led the team in rushing. For this contribution he received special recognition by being named to the second All-City team, and was voted Most Voluable Player by his teammates. The West High Steppers performed with efficiency. Not only did they appear at athletic events, but they also had new and original dances for the Cheerleaders' Dance, Sadie Hawkins, and the Variety Show. Cheerleading captain, Pam Brady, and her enthusiastic squad generated school spirit with victory posters, game slogans, and pep rallies. The computer closs, headed by Mr. Lindberg, is the first of its kind in the nation. Students struggle with flow charts, learn about number systems, fight over the flexowriter and feed endless yellow topes into the computer. The students who earn credits as well as money at a job are participating in the occupational relations program. Carrying groceries, typing letters, and waiting on tables are a few of the jobs which this program provides. The humanities class, taught by Miss Westby, is studying man's ideas and feelings about life recorded in literature, drama, art. and music. Students learn to read accurately, to communicate ideas clearly, and to think for themselves. These three programs highlight a basic academic program which includes four languages, experimental mathematics, art, electronics, and home economics. A low of 26 degrees below zero, a record for this day, delayed the arrival of Princess Pat Ernst and also caused the snowman building contest to be cancelled. Students warmed up to the music of Donny and The Kostirs, concluding a Sno-Day long to be remembered.
