Foreword Fifty-one years ago, when the students of West High School chose Hesperia, Star of the West, as their school symbol, they could not have realized how significant this symbol was to become. How could they know, in those last days of the horse and buggy era, that within a half century, other West High students would seriously be considering travel toward that Western Star? Today, all nations are vitally interested in the stars. Man made satellites circle the earth and the exploration of space is rapidly yielding knowledge that will change our world. The people of America have realized that the future of our country in this space age, lies in the education of its youth. Therefore, in a process of developing a space minded society, American education is changing. Our program at West High School reflects many of these changes. There is evidence of a growing seriousness of purpose and a more intensive program of studies. The humanities, sciences, and vocational courses are being revised and accelerated to meet more adequately the needs of the individual student and to prepare him for the various roles that he will take in the nation and world of a space age. The 1959 Hesperian is designed to show the present spirit of West High School — how the students think, work, plan and look toward the future in this new star age.
