Athletics Physical fitness is as necessary in a student's growth as is his mental development. Emotional, mental and physical maturity are dependent on each other and are important to both the individual and society. No school or nation can provide a balanced education if any one of these aspects of development is neglected. At West High School, the athletic program is concerned with physical fitness and the health of all students. It is a vital part of both class and extracurricular programs. Teams of all sports are important in the school for they give their members an opportunity to develop their special interests in athletics and to receive recognition for their efforts and abilities. Sports unify the school in spirit and give the total student body an opportunity to see their fellow students perform. However, West's athletic program goes much further than varsity participation of team members. Intra-mural sports, physical education classes and community sports programs reach all students. In the last three years, we have seen scientific advances that have increased automation. Soon daily work will demand little in the way of physical activity and our leisure time will be extended. In the different kind of a life the future will bring, the understandings, skills, and wholesome interests gained in our West High School athletic program will help us be healthy, happy, and alert citizens.

Our five Social Clubs form an unusual system of high school girls' clubs. They were organized in 1954 to meet the need for a school sponsored democratic organization that would include all interested girls. This group of clubs has been one of the most successful projects of our school. Each club is an individual organization with its own constitution, but all are unified by a Social Club Board consisting of the president and representatives from each group. The Social Clubs ore famous for their promotion and support of all school activities. Their out-ofschool activities are numerous and include many community projects. These include activities that have a strong emphasis on charity and social services. Friendship and social life are an important part of the clubs' programs. These include teos, meetings, dances and the well known Christmas Formal. 25
