kzjvtjo n onond snodvaNNicu t ow S tjyf h W 1W' lose T7 JSV Foreword Fifty-one years ago, when the students of West High School chose Hesperia, Star of the West, as their school symbol, they could not have realized how significant this symbol was to become. How could they know, in those last days of the horse and buggy era, that within a half century, other West High students would seriously be considering travel toward that Western Star? Today, all nations are vitally interested in the stars. Man made satellites circle the earth and the exploration of space is rapidly yielding knowledge that will change our world. The people of America have realized that the future of our country in this space age, lies in the education of its youth. Therefore, in a process of developing a space minded society, American education is changing. Our program at West High School reflects many of these changes. There is evidence of a growing seriousness of purpose and a more intensive program of studies. The humanities, sciences, and vocational courses are being revised and accelerated to meet more adequately the needs of the individual student and to prepare him for the various roles that he will take in the nation and world of a space age. The 1959 Hesperian is designed to show the present spirit of West High School — how the students think, work, plan and look toward the future in this new star age. The strength and excellence of any educational program is dependent upon its faculty's ideals, motives, preparation and ability to teach. The faculty of West High School is a group with broad experience and advanced training. They are specialists in both their subjects and extra-curricular activities. In the clubs and organizations, they assist and instruct the students informally. Participation in such activities allow the students and faculty to develop real friendships and make West a truly cooperative school. West High School's administrators, teachers and other staff members give freely of their time and energy in promoting the school and its activities. It is through their interests in students as individuals, that they are able to help with educational, vocational, and personal problems. They give encouragement to Westites that aid them in making the most of their talents and abilities. Their enthusiasm is contagious and often the spark that starts students on their way to various successes. We, the graduating Seniors, have come to realize how much our instructors have contributed to our development, and many of us will know that it was in their classrooms that our careers began. Mr. Morris Says Goodbye Mr. J. Morris, Principal I am taking this opportunity to say goodby to the students, teachers and personnel of West High School. I am retiring this June, after many years of being a part of this outstanding School. It has been a great privilege and a pleasure to have been associated with West High School. Not only has it been an inspiration, but a lot of fun to work with the youth of this community. The rewards have been great. I am confident that the future of the school will be as splendid as the past that I have personally known. What West High School means to its graduates was dramatically shown last year when we celebrated West's 50th Anniversary; what it means to the staff is demonstrated each day by their work and words; what it means to the present students is expressed in the West High Creed. These are the things that make our school great. I shall miss my daily contacts with you, but I have plans for an intensely busy program of reading, outdoor projects and conservation work. Through these activities, I shall be in contact with the youth of Minneapolis; they are my greatest interest. Mr. W. Palm, Assistant Principal Good-by, Mr. Morris, The thousands of students and hundreds of faculty members who have had the good fortune to know you will indeed feel sod when you lock your office door for the last time. You have given generously of yourself and your abilities to the betterment of all who have been associated with you during your 35 years at West High School. Your life hos been a devoted one. Your many outstanding personal qualities have been enhanced by the manner in which you have lived and worked — always a gentleman and always building and strengthening the traditions of West High School. I indeed feel most humble in expressing to you that Well Done which comes from the hearts of all who have known you. These faculty members are: Mrs. Delois Warren and Miss Nancy Watrud, English; Mrs. Rosemary Prohofsky, Home Economics; and Miss Karlotte Thompson, Librarian. Along with classroom instruction, these teachers also have been active in advising clubs and helping with school projects. Mrs. Warren has been an assistant to Miss Blessin's Creative Writing Club. Miss Watrud was the factulty adviser to the Times and directed the Senior Class Play. Co-odvising the Social Clubs was the job if Mrs. Prohofsky. Our librarian. Miss Thompson, organized the school's text book system. Their teaching and guidance encouraged us to extend our knowledge and develop our abilities. Gustafson, L. Handeland, J. Peterson, Lunchroom Staff Service with a smile was a symbol of our lunchroom staff. Despite the stampeding hordes of students waiting for cookies and caramel rolls, the cooks survived our shouts and grabbing hands. The students and faculty always appreciated their cheerful spirits and good service. Custodian Staff Keeping a building running smoothly takes training and skill. Our custodian staff has both, plus the quality of friendliness. They were interested in our activities and we will always remember them as a group of avid football fans with grandstand seats in 326. 11 Organizations As Seniors, some of us will end our classroom training this year, some will go on to four years of college, and a few will do advanced graduate work. But whatever our future, we will spend much time in association with informal groups. Thus, West High School has developed organizations to meet the great variety of student needs and to make our school life well rounded. Being in a school club, whether it is for social, academic, or philanthropic purposes, is a vital factor in developing personalities. Here we learn the rewards of brotherhood that could never be gained in formal classroom associations. The experience of working for the benefit of the group as a whole gives greater personal satisfactions than any achievement which has only individual gains. All of the clubs extend knowledge and give us the opportunity of working with a group with common interests. Some of the groups are service organizations and in them, help to others is the by-word. Whether it is making popcorn to be sold at a football game or planning a fund drive for a Greek orphan, these groups are practicing the virtue of giving, which is the real meaning of service. As individuals in our school groups, we learn to serve and contribute. In this way we enjoy our school more and are better prepared for participation in democratic life. Student Council ROW 1: I. Our Student Council is the body which represents the students in the school government. Its members and officers are elected by their respective classes on the basis of scholastic record and ability to serve. The Council's duties consist of consulting with the school administration on affairs relative to the student body, helping to solve some of the general behavior problems and sponsoring all-school activities. This year it has organized and run the Homecoming and other celebrations very successfully. The Council has also modified the Teenage Code to better fit the needs of our student body. The Student Council is our first major practice in democratic self-government. Government . . . Scholarship . . . Leadership . . . Character Service Club At every home football game, the Service Club provided a food stand for both schools in competition. They also decorated the hall Christmas trees and sponsored the hockey jamboree. With the money they made from their concessions, they bought many useful items for the athletic teams. The girls in the Service Club certainly have been an asset to West High School. They were aided by Mr. D. Houck who purchased the goodies for them and told them where and how to sell. ROW 1: B. Paulson this year. The hard working members had many projects this year. Among these were filling Red Cross chests built by the woodworking classes. Mr. J. Dunnewald and his students also designed and made over two-hundred bed trays and footstools for hospitals and homes. A checker board made for community institutions was chosen to appeor in a Finnish exhibition. Three other items also won acclaim by appearing at the Brussels World Fair. Their numbers ranged from serious to humorous presentations. Under the direction of Carol Savela, with Kathy Finrud as Co-captain, the sixteen regular members and five alternates practiced many hours developing and perfecting their routines. Even then their work was not done, for each girl furnished the material and made her own costume. Their major performances this year have been at football and basketball games and the Sno Day and Homecoming celebrations. They were organized in 1954 to meet the need for a school sponsored democratic organization that would include all interested girls. This group of clubs has been one of the most successful projects of our school. Each club is an individual organization with its own constitution, but all are unified by a Social Club Board consisting of the president and representatives from each group. The Social Clubs ore famous for their promotion and support of all school activities. Their out-ofschool activities are numerous and include many community projects. These include activities that have a strong emphasis on charity and social services. Friendship and social life are an important part of the clubs' programs. These include teos, meetings, dances and the well known Christmas Formal. 25 Athletics Physical fitness is as necessary in a student's growth as is his mental development. Emotional, mental and physical maturity are dependent on each other and are important to both the individual and society. No school or nation can provide a balanced education if any one of these aspects of development is neglected. At West High School, the athletic program is concerned with physical fitness and the health of all students. It is a vital part of both class and extracurricular programs. Teams of all sports are important in the school for they give their members an opportunity to develop their special interests in athletics and to receive recognition for their efforts and abilities. Sports unify the school in spirit and give the total student body an opportunity to see their fellow students perform. However, West's athletic program goes much further than varsity participation of team members. Intra-mural sports, physical education classes and community sports programs reach all students. In the last three years, we have seen scientific advances that have increased automation. Soon daily work will demand little in the way of physical activity and our leisure time will be extended. West Proves City's Spoilers Under head coach Bob Roy, assisted by Chuck Voss, Eric Lindberg, Dave Primrose, and Pio Sartori, the West football team enjoyed a very successful season. Highlights of the year were the five-year scoring record in the 33 to 6 Henry victory and the near upset of city champion. Southwest. Bob Temp was an All-City tackle on the first team and Rollie Ring was All-City halfback on the second team. Quarterback Ron FindorfF was honored as West's most valuable player. Edison's continuous pressure proved fatal for the Cowboys in the year's opening game. Our first victory of the campaign came on a safety on the last play of the Roosevelt contest. Scoring was the big factor in our next two games; West scoring 33 against Henry and none against champion Washburn. A disappointing Homecoming game found West outfighting and outplaying Southwest, but still losing to the champions in our season's heartbreaker. The final home game gave Marshall its heartbreak with West's defense shining in our only shutout of the year. The best played second half of the year closed the schedule for West, however the second half wasn't enough and Central squeezed by the victor. Captains Schwartz and lemke. 28 ROW 1: J. lemk . Rising out of the cellar, Ade Nelson's 1959 cagers showed flashes of brilliance in city competition this year. Led by Captain Art Iverson, the Cowboys proved to be tough opposition. Highlight of the year was the 76 to 39 victory over Edison, setting a new school scoring record. Special mention goes to All-City selection Iverson, who was also the second highest scorer in the city, and to Rocky Mattson who was named honorable mention All-City. The Swimming Team was made predominantly of juniors and sophomores, so everyone will be back for next season. Coach Casserly feels that a city championship for next year would not be an exaggerated prediction. The highlights of the year were the fine individual performances of his tankers. Co-captains Bill Porteous and Craig Kissock led the team to its high finish. Porteous won the 400-yard free style event in the City Meet. Our Divers, Blair Williamson and Todd Lowe are expected to win the city championship for West in their event next year. Teamwork is credited for a good share of the success had by the swimmers. Coach Don Houck's team, led by the six senior captains, failed to reach potential. Highlight of the year was the tie with city-champion Southwest. Team play, led by co-captains, Jim McEachran and Dennis Severson, is credited for the successful season. Hardworking seniors included Larry Voronyak, Tom le-May, Jim McEachran, Dick Rohwedder and Bruce Smith. Special mention goes to Odber Standal, who finished undefeated in city competition, and Bruce Smith an outstanding heavyweight. The West High Ski Team, perennial power in the city, continued as such this year. Captain John Wheeler led the team to the finish of the season event, the State Meet held in Duluth. The only handicap the skiers had was the great lack of heavy Minnesota snow, which kept the spirited team from many workouts. Special mention for hard work and, performance goes to team members John Wheeler, Don White, Phil Weller, Don Elstad, Jim Hansen, Peter Hauzenberger, Gerald Fisher and Mike Green, who took part in jumping, cross country and slalom events. Returning seniors include Roger Ingalls, Art Iverson, Dennis Amundson and Melvin Schwartz; juniors. Rocky Mattson, Jim Sorenson, and John Thompson. Cross Country Wins Fifth in State Cross Country Coach Richard Blomgren's underrated runners surprised the experts by placing fifth in the State Meet. The Harriers also grabbed third place in the City and Regional Meets. The teamwork of Captain Dick Rohwedder, John Elkins, Bob Lindberg, Tom Le-May, Duane Nelson, and John Wheeler made possible the excellent record of the West High team. John Wheeler captured seventh place in the Duluth Invitational Meet and sixth place in the Minnesota State Meet. Tom LeMay placed in the first 15 in the City Meet. Outstanding Juniors were: Dennis Cran- dall, Larry Bestler, Bill Jackson, and Mickey Brewer. One of the highlights of the year was the defeat of our arch rivals, St. Louis Park and Hopkins, in the Region V Meet. This enabled West to place third out of 22 teams and qualify for the State Meet. Track Captained by veteran Trackman Sheldon Quist, the West Track team will be aiming for another year that will be marked by individual performances of West boys. These included a bake sale, tournaments and meets with other city schools, intramural games at home and the annual Letter Banquet. The individual sport heads, with the help of Miss Peterson, worked hard to keep their own sport running smoothly. Golf Meadowbrook and the long, hot spring will not soon be forgotten by the loyal members of the girl's golf team. The season started with Linda Grossman and Marlene Gordon as co-captains and three other returning members. The days grew hotter and the muscles got sorer, but the girls played on and their game improved. All in all, the team did very well and Miss Peterson was pleased with the year. Tennis The tennis team with Jean Strothman as captain started the season with much enthusiasm and high hopes after winning the city championship last year. The eleven returning members served as a strong backbone for this year's team. It was a year of split rackets, muddy balls, blistered feet, and struggles for practice time on the courts. Although things didn't always go right, and the practices were long and painful, the team had a good year. Golf Team: L Orotimon, L Deutiche. M. Zumberge, C. Sovela, M. Gordon. Girls7 Sports Offer Year Around Activities Swimming With Linda Eisenstadt as captain and Miss Peterson as coach, the girls' swimming team sploshed its way through the three scheduled school meets and won two of them. After these, our hardy swimmers went into the city meet and took fifth place. Some of the little things that will long be remembered are the lost towels, forgotten caps, the lovely tank suits, the chlorinated throats and the icy showers and the straight hair. Badminton All of the hard work and long hours of practice paid off for our girls' badminton team this year. They were second in the city and won their District Championship. They will never forget the bruised knees, the birds on the beams. Miss Peterson and her fishing pole, the holes in the rackets, the lost tennis shoes, and the days when nothing would go right. When the title is long forgotten, these things will still be alive in the memories of our District Champs. Badminton Team ROW I: M. Ewing, $. Donoton, K. Hlx, L. Groisman, D. Graiticb, S. Kuhn, R. Each year we have seen these signs, heard these cheers, and watched our underclassmen grow to realize that Seniors are Supreme! These much used slogans are symbolic of our pep and fun and add zest to our West High celebrations and spirit. This school spirit is something that takes three years for full growth, but is felt by all new groups. Our underclassmen felt it in their classrooms and extracurricular activities. As they gradually took more part in school life, they became a part of the spirit and made it grow to the strong force it is today. The underclassmen have had an important part in the changing program of West High School. They have participated in the new accelerated mathematics and social studies courses. They have been able to use a completely new machine shop and to view educational programs on our recently acquired television sets. They have the advantage of an added counselor and an assistant principal's services. They have been able to carry more courses and to respond to the new emphasis on scholarship. This year's underclassmen have taken an active part in the school and have been aware of the opportunities offered to them. With their spirit, typical of true Westites, they have been able to take advantage of the school program. When they graduate, they will know that they have been prepared well for the challenge of their future. 318-Miss Warren ROW 1: J. Boike, L. Thadei, V. Oletxke, 0. Cad-mu . ROW 2: E. Vang, M. The problems of nuclear energy, survival and space exploration have developed at a rapid pace during our high school days. Scientific advances have influenced the world of ideas as well as events. Our country will need many people who will create leadership and security for America. We of the Senior Class hope that we are prepared to serve and meet this challenge of the future. We have had an opportunity to learn in a pleasant school environment of understanding and guidance. In our classrooms, we have developed common understandings, attitudes and skills. Through personal choices of courses and activities, we have identified our individual interests, talents and abilities. In our organizational work, sports, school committees, clubs, councils and dramatics, we have learned to develop and use social and other practical skills. By taking part in the well planned academic and extracurricular program df West High School, we have deepened our understanding of life and its responsibilities. We hope that our school and faculty will be proud of its 1959 graduates, for we have truly tried to live up to the West High School Creed: The Ideal of our school is Democracy — The Aim of our school is Service — The Honor of our school is Sportsmanship — The Spirit of our school is West Wins. All through the year, with each event came the stronge awareness that this again was the last. The Class activities began with the heated campaign for officers ... a riotous week . . . friendly foes . . . clever hall posters . . . fiery speeches and election! Then the officers took the lead and the Friday class meetings started with casual Cass advising. Money making projects got going . . . class pictures were exchanged . . . Class Play cast was selected . . . studying kept interrupting . . . Sno-less-Sno-Day was hilarious . . . Baccalaureate Exercises . . . The Hesperian .. . Class Day . . . Then to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance we marched down the aisle to our graduation . . . and there were tears . . . for we knew that this was the last of a wonderful year! Club tonight, the variety of activities is tremendous, the list is endless and they all add up to make school life wonderful! Each activity has its own values and significance and West's program is built on the idea that we learn from play as well as from work. Producing and taking part in auditoriums, planning special event days, and organizing large groups of students provide a means by which abstract understandings and skills are tested in action and real situations. Working on these projects with fellow students helps one to accept responsibility and develop goals and values. There are many sides to education. West's variety of activities is a part of a well rounded high school program which is necessary to make the present valuable and pleasant while preparing for the future. What is now learned in daily school life will be the foundation of the student's future way of living. Homecoming . . . Annual Highlight Return to your second hour doit. The day's opening event was a stupendous auditorium MC'd by the remarkable Wartnick brothers, later a pep fest and then the longest parade in the history of West. The Art Club won the trophy for the best float. Our football game was an exciting statistical victory even if the score was West 14 and Southwest 19. The day was topped off with a gala dance at the Columbia Chalet with Dick and Don Maw's band providing the music. The Homecoming will never be forgotten! ROW I: R. Proman, N. Wortnick, E.
