AfNlCO CDlNhjeAPOUS pUOLIC LI AttV West High School Minneapolis, Minnesota These our years at West High School have been abundant in activities and memories. Both the pleasures and experiences have become a part of us, and without realizing it, they have developed into the progress that has been our making. This progress is the seed of a whole new world that will soon be opening up for us; a world of which we are only the smallest link in a long chain. Thus the 1957 Hesperian recaptures our moments of glory as the leaders of what we call — “History in the Making”. The men and women who constitute our faculty have played a large part in the role of our progress these past three years. Not only have they helped to further our education, but also our individual interests and enthusiasms toward the future and what new challenges lurk in its shadows. We have come to know our instructors not as the ruling hands of authority and discipline, but as people to whom our deepest gratitude should he expressed. In later years our fondest memories will be of high school, and the pinnacle of our success will have had its origin in the depth of understanding and wisdom they gave to us. Faculty JOHN E. Whether a student assumes leadership or remains a follower, his contribution, along with the rest of the students, unites our efforts in the capability of improving our school both morally and physically. In a group such as ours, no one person stands as an indispensable figure, looked upon with awe and admiration for his participation and ingenuity in school affairs. It is rather our combined achievements that make us one in carrying on traditions and attaining new heights of recognition for our school name. This outlet refers to the many clubs and organizations that provide variety and assets of education in forming ideas and putting them to good use. The field of such organizations is on a large scale, and it offers something for all students, from foreign languages to dramatics. It is because of student participation in these clubs that our progress is marked for a definite goal in the improvement of our school, and for the satisfaction of all the students in years to come that will enter our hallowed halls. It detours by way of the fun and activities that help bring to each student a more complete realization that school is as beneficial as it is necessary to a better and profitable way of life. These activities give several students a chance to display their splendid array of talents, and for many they give the opportunity of getting to know one another better while working on extracurricular projects like dances, auditoriums, or special occasions such as “Sno-Day”. Some of the best events that take place during the school year occur on the athletic field, and whether football or baseball is being played, nothing else could arouse more spirit and sense of pride among the students. The teachers also contribute their share of enthusiasm in making sports a unified effort of team work, and our progress more prominent. Our incentive however, is not only to attain victories, in the sense of heroism and glory, but more of a step in the direction of learning to work together towards a goal worthy of reaching, and to prove that a winning team is not always the best team. Without it, our results would have been less gratifying. We also wish to thank Lundgren Studios for their photography work; Mr. Art Segal and Mr. Alan Ominsky of the Bureau of Engraving; our student photographers, Ed Young and Mike Maxwell; and Pat Loftback and Bob Parks, for their able assistance. The progress that has been ours during high school is only the beginning for us in the unforeseen opportunities that will follow us over the threshold of the future. We are now ready to put forth the same ambition and determination of these past three years, into new patterns of life, which will scatter us in many directions. In years to come, as we look back over the 1957 Hesperian s presentation of “History in the Making”, we can proudly say that it was this progress on which we based our goals for a new and challenging way of life.
