CONTENTS Faculty.................... 4 Students...................12 Clubs......................32 Features ..................48 Sports 56 4 FACULTY Miss Maxine M. Baker In three-nineteen and twenty-one We have a teacher pert and smart. She seems to know what’s going on. And also teaches art. Mr. Richard Blomgren This fellow resembles one of the kids And typing is his forte. Bookkeeping's thrown in for extra time, While swimming is his sport. Mrs. Vera Braden When we wanted to skip, it used to be, We went to the nurse and played sick! But never again will that happen here ’Cause Mrs. Braden's on to that trick. Mr. Willis W. Bradley Bradley’s assignments are meant to be done And woe to he who would shirk! An easy credit will not be found here. Modern Problems is for those who work. Miss Gladys Chamberlin We always take our problems to her And leave much increased in knowledge. She arranges and changes our classes And helps us to choose the right college. Mr. Floyd A. Chandler Good old Doc.” He’s quite the lad! In history he can’t be beat— And who, that's had him, will ever forget; You can't grow grass on a busy street.” Miss Vora M. Dendinger You have fun in class reading Macbeth, You act out witch I” and witch 2.” But no loafing or shirking is ever allowed For only the A work will do. Miss Frances W. Ford She fusses with her pots and pans. Her classes are ambitious— They burn, they scald, but all ends well— The results are quite delicious. Miss Therese M. Gude Those red and blue tests were a terror, We crept by that classroom in dread. No matter how hard, the job was well done. That geometry stays in our head. Mr. Victor F. Hansen Here's a guy that’s really solid So we praise him to the sky. He cheers for us, directs our band, And provides music for all West High. 7 Miss Edith B. Hosser The library's a place to study and learn. It's used by both girls and boys. You go there to browse, read, and write. But you leavo if you make any noise. Miss Ruth Hill Miss Hill is a pal to all of us. Her teaching is of the best, Her acting of Shakespearian plays Will sure pass every test. Mr. Donald A. Houck Plants, animals, and bones abound In those basement biology classes. He's one of the best in spite of his tests, But he's death on little pink passes. Mrs. Kathleen Hyland Her stature’s petite, her attitude sweet, Well liked by all the gym gals. She looks like a student, never is prudent. The best of professorly pals. Mr. Ancil llstrup He sure knows his modern problems And he is liked by one and all, He's one super terrific teacher, But a li'l nervous in the fall. Mr. Lloyd O. Johnson A crew cut's the thing he has discovered, Quite short and sorta fuzzy. We all loved Johnson, but never developed The same affection for Muzzey. Mrs. Alice M. Kean She sure is a honey, on that we agree. Every kid in West adores her— Her radio classes are fun. os you know And oh, how our acting does floor her. Mrs. Jesse G. Martin She finds jobs and helps make plans For professions and vocations. We’re awfully glad to have her around To teach occupational relations. Mr. Dwight McLaughlin We studied our Spanish just like he said. But our minds are as dull as con be So we didn't retain it. and as a result All we con say is si. si! Miss Ora McLaughlin Miss McLaughlin just can't be on time But this habit we'll have to excuse. Her hands are full of Latin and French Besides getting all of the news. 8 Mr. Jesse E. Moore After a day in metals and woods. With boys who must have their sprees, He ambles homeward and prepares to enjoy An evening alone with his bees. Mr. Albert D. Nelson Algebra, geometry, and trig are fun, You’ll love it if you try it. Don't be dismayed by equations and logs. For Nelson is really a riot. Mr. Arthur D. Norton This fellow's tests will curdle your blood. And make you feel like a fool. But look past those tests and you'll see He's one of the nicest profs in school. Miss Mary J. Palmer She starts with ancient history And works on through modern ways. But from Caesar up to Stassen The kids are in a daze. Mr. J. Vincent Porter Porter teaches in two twenty-four; His shorthand knowledge is strong. We learn our typing but have one complaint: His homework assignments are long. Miss Marjorie G. Spaulding We read Beowulf and Chaucer And 'twas fun we all did find, For along with English literature Came the science of the mind. Mr. Sigvald Stoylen There's no shaking or quaking in his class To see on whom next he’ll call— In sophomore English, and on the staff. We certainly all have a ball. Mrs. Dorothy P. Styer When we tear our clothes, we go to her To attend to all such matters. Her needles, pins, scissors, and thread, Keep the kids from being in tatters. Mrs. Elizabeth R. Wells Her talks are spicy, her jokes are rare. Her classes have never caused strife. Her program says English—don't be misled: She’s teaching a course on Life. Mr. Hugo H. Wickstrom His biology courses are a lot of fun, He makes them that way, by crocker. He’s got an alligator on the wall And a skeleton in his locker. 9 Mr. Louis Zavodslcy in JHeittortmit We of West will miss Mr. Zavodsky. In his thirty-five years of service he established himself as a vital link in the chain which binds this school together. Mr. Zavcdsky demanded loyalty, a virtue he also possessed. Once you had separated the differences of teacher and student. Mr. Zavodsky’s amiable personality and gentle wit were ever present. If you gained Mr. Zavodsky's respect, you could always count on his friendly advice. Add on the fact that he would exert himself to the limit to help you. To his athletes his attitude was one of fatherly companionship and help. As a coach his accomplishments are numerous. Besides winning six state track championships for West, he coached cross country and gymnastics. After having been coached in any sport by Mr. Zavodsky, one felt that he had gained more than just physical ability. He always asked that you set your goal high and strive hard to achieve it. By his example he instilled high standards and integrity in all his athletes. When a man has given thirty-five years of his life to a school and poured all his knowledge and spirit into his teachings, his memory is not easily forgotten. We will not forget this man, and the things he accomplished will be perpetually remembered. Given by Joe Shackelford at the memorial program. Office Staff-Mrs. R, Nelson. Mr E. F'ose. Ml;s I. Mahoney. Miss A. Edberg. Behind the scenes at West there are many minds and hands working industriously to keep our school running smoothly. They keep us from starving or freezing to death and handle all of the complicated problems that arise in a school office. We all appreciate the friendly and cooperative service these people render to West. lunchroom Stoff—Mrs H Eng !, Miss M Conner, Mr-, G. Homoo Miss M. TebblM. Not thown-Miss M. Here it is: the spring of 1952 . . . and we, the seniors of '52, are graduating ... As we look back over our days at West we see many things which we will never forget . . . the football and basketbal! games, the carnivals and paper sales . . . and all that made up our three years . . . We will remember how we were once shy and unconfident sophomores, gay and carefree juniors . . . and how wc finally came to that stage that can be described by only one word— seniors . . . During each of those first two years we saw a group of students graduate from West . . . first the class of 50 and then the class of '51 ... and now it is our turn . . . This was our year, our baccalaureate, class play, picnic, and class day . . . and our commencement ... All that SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES-Row 1-C. S- ow, S. Z.omer. J. Deoilow Row 2-M. Imm, C. Lind. M. To administrate the affairs of our class we have chosen Joe Shackelford, President; Theane Christie. Vice President; Sally Irons, Secretary; and Bob Swisher, Treasurer . . . The laurels for achievement in scholarship have been awarded to Carol Lind and Janet Stewart. Valedictorians; and Beverly Woo, Sa-lutatorian . . . Mgr Football—With a strong line and a promising back-field, WEST went into its playing schedule. Opening against South, the Cowboys ran rampant against a strong Tiger team. After returning from a victorious trip to Mason City, lowo. the team won a thriller against Edison at the Parodo Grounds. WEST's high-geared attack slowed slightly against Roosevelt, winning by only one touchdown: but jumped into action for the Henry game, the Pats taking a real beating. In the Homecoming gome with our arch rival, Washburn, the Cowboys came through again. The qome of the season with Southwest was next. A hard fighting WEST team went down to defeat after putting up a great fight. The Cowboys met and lest to Marshall in the season's last game. UNHAND ME. FOUL VILLAIN! D. Kucala l ALL-CITY S. All winter the golf classes putted and drove, preparing to go out and really play in the spring. The swimming team went down to the Y.W.C.A. once a week and practiced for a big meet in February. Even though we had a very small team, we succeeded in placing fourth in the city meet. Modern dancing was fun and good for DON'T SWING NOW! LET'S GET ON THE BALL. GIRLS! SMASH! MISS AMERICA CONTEST?
