OR EWORD TO BEGIN WITH ... this was our senior year, full of those anticipated moments. Remember those SCHEDULES, DEADLINES, COLLECTING and SOLICITING? All for one purpose ... to produce a '51 HESPERIAN of which we could be proud. The diversions will bring back memories ... the excitement of FALL, the START of school, the new CLASSES, FOOTBALL, class ELECTIONS and Thanksgiving VACATION. WINTER brought Christmas FESTIVITIES, crisp winter SPORTS, and much GAZING out the window wondering if the snow would ever melt . . . Finally it did and SPRING rolled around filled with tense EXCITEMENT of CLASS PLAY, BASEBALL, CLASS DAY, the sentimental job of getting the old GANG together just once more. Then the proud, wonderful evening of COMMENCEMENT.... Remember? This was OUR SENIOR YEAR. ICATION TO ALL WESTITES ... PAST ... the chance to build a school was yours ... flexible, undeveloped spirits to mold into the ideals of West... CLUBS to form, STANDARDS to build, TEAMS to raise, and CLASSES to organize ... PRESENT . . . you have reaped the benefits of experience . . . made life long friends . . . won honors . . . WEST is yours to enjoy and remember... its spirit drives you to goals unthought of ... FUTURE ... to you we leave WEST ... with its patient teachers ... fun-packed auditoriums... its fine tradition and dauntless spirit... your character and future will be influenced by West ... so let's remember WEST WINS ... The everyday happenings of old WEST grow into tradition which binds the generations together. TO YOU ... past, present, and future WESTITES ... we dedicate the 1951 HESPERIAN. From 1908 through 1951 the world has progressed farther than our forefathers ever dared dream was possible. Some of the more startling changes can be seen in education. Through the years, West has changed also: its cirriculum has been 4 v Contents Faculty 6 Students 16 Clubs 42 Features 60 Athletics 68 enlarged and it has further fostered qualities of leadership in the community and in its students. Now in West's forty-third year, we, the class of '51, know that evolution will continue to be as marked in the future as in the past. our . . . the future of Westites is molded by their guidance . . . Starting the season with a loss to North, followed by a defeat at the hands of Washburn. deep gloom settled over the Cowboy camp. Finding themselves, they ran Vocational into the floor, outscoring the Volts by thirteen. Central’s Pioneers proved too strong for the Green and White, decision-ing them by twenty. Once again they found themselves and outplayed the Indians of Southwest, winning by a margin of three points. Darkness once again fell upon the Cowboys as they lost to Roosevelt. South and Henry. For his performance in the Washburn game. Jack Mobeck was honored as All-City. while Jim Springer received the plaudits following the Southwest tilt. The B Squad, coached by Mr. Johnson finished a little better. The small squad won its share of games but suffered due to its size. The absence of more capable men was indeed felt. Tennis—Under the expert guidance of Doc Chandler. West's tennis players have worked to achieve laurels in the city’s high school tennis world. Likewise, the opposing pitchers realized that extra protection was a necessity, as Coach Houck hauled out his heaviest hitters for the 51 season. Boasting one of the strongest infields and some of the fastest and most accurate pitchers, West's diamond men have once again proved themselves to be triumphant in a tough league. The 1950 squad finished runner-up to Central in the southern division. Able pitching and an expert infield meant the difference. Last year's senior squad members will be missed this year. Veterans Jack Mobeck, Steve Rajcic, Jim Stellmaker and Gene Elder rounded out the ’51 infield while Pat Turnbull, George Hay-ano and Dick Maw patrolled the outfield. I 81 GIRLS' Modern dance techniques set to music, neat white shirts and comfortable shorts replace the calisthenics, middy blouses and voluminous bloomers of our mothers' school days. Leadership classes train the girls to take complete control of gym classes and afford an opportunity for ambitious girls to win a W for their service. Analyzing posture faults and figure problems, collecting good grooming tips and fashion advice are some of the activities of the newly organized self improvement class. If you should see some especially well groomed students strolling through the halls with copies of Adventures in English Literature perched precariously upon their heads, don't be alarmed. They are just members of the class taking their lessons to heart. The swim gym class has developed some really fine swimmers and given others the opportunity to become acquainted with water safety rules and splash about without their water wings. The Girls' swimming team should be the envy of the boys' team. RICKETS VS. RACKETS S. Flynn. J. Han en HIGH DIVE S. Flynn, S Danielion STUDY IN SUSPENSION I. Schlonkflr, J. Thornton, P. West finished with a grand total of 43 points, swamping Southwest's second place total of 30 points. Although only four West girls entered the state meet, they took third place. Sports such as tennis and badminton are still the most popular with girls and West has several city champions in its midst. The importance of competition in swimming and tennis should be realized, for these sports enable girls to work up to their ability at their own pace without having to compete against boys' teams for recognition.
