NEWGARD Secretary Leaders All It was an exciting day in September, 1947, when 300 fearful, yet hopefu', sophomores invaded West High. They struggled through the maze of room numbers, met new friends, studied new subjects and loved every minute at West. Football season came and went just as did tests and report cards. In the spring West went all out for baseball, winning City and Twin City championships. The fall of 1948 found the class of 50 juniors. What fun to make the sophomores suffer as they hod suffered! West went wild over the Page Cave-naugh Trio at Homecoming. New band uniforms were a reality at last. Leaders in scholarship, sports and music were developing. At last 277 of these were seniors. Phil Worrell was e'ected class president and he appointed com- AFTER HOURS wo reii, rrojiaenfj iv . jonmon, i_ommoncorT oni; o. von incji, bom or uanco; i naniv. “7’ ' _ , _ ' „ • , ' , ,, y M. Will anyone ever forget the Gay Nineties' Carnival with its handle-bar mustaches and bustles or the dance? Class play try outs were next. Everyone was in suspense wondering if he would get a part. Twenty-eight people gave wonderful performances. Seniors wanted to stay on forever, but time was running out. What a wonderful year! Baccalaureate presented serious thoughts as seniors began their last week at West. Party and picnic sparked the final week and on June 15, 268 nervous seniors reminisced over their three years of high school. Service, scholarship and ability won awards. The way of the seniors was not easy, but their reward was not small either. HOURS AFTER Center Front-J. Cooper. J. O'Brien. Mi Holt. P. Kongo,. R. Andrew . Bock Row-0. Johmon. S. Sewoll, G. TO THEE WE SING Bound together by a mutual interest in vocal achievements, the members of the choir, under the direction of Mr. Hansen, are seeking to improve their musical potentialities. The Christmas season found them exerting a wholesome influence Ot er the patrons of the Farmers and Mechanics Bank through the uplifting spirit of their music. A January concert at St. Marks was given by the choir, and records of the recital were sold to students as a non-profit service. The Music Festival December 7 netted money for West's entire music department. The choir lent beauty and a ceremonial atmosphere to West's Christmas and Thanksgiving auditoriums. An outlet for musical expression is offered to the thirty-six students who unite to form West Hiqh's band. Highlighting this organization are the cornet trio, clarinet quartet, woodwind sextet and old time unit for folk-dancing, which illumine the activity of their genus. OFFICERS President .. .R. Their service to the Carnival and the Hesperian dance deviated from their usual ushering duties and came in the form of coat checking. Under the direction of Miss Hill, the members of the club planned to include service to organizations outside the school in their year's program. They ushered at the annual concert of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. The concert given by this organization attracted appreciators of musical harmony from all of Minneapolis as well as its outlying districts. An example of their versatility was shown by the knitting of afghans for the Veterans' Hospital. OFFICERS Co-Chairman ... . P. Cochrane Co-Chairman P. For efficiency the group of sixty-five is subdivided into smaller committees, each of which focuses its attention on a separate auditorium under the leadership of a student chairman and emcee. This group has been responsible for bringing to West such programs as a magic and sleight of hand show, judo exhibition, a musical recital by missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and concerts by the Owatonna High School and the Jefferson Junior High band. Enthusiasm was developed through the Minnesota Territorial Centennial, and many girls who participated in this celebration are now charter members of this newly-formed organization. RACKETEERS Joining the ranks of West's clubs, a new subdivision of the GAA, the Racket Club, appealed to girls interested in tennis and badminton. Year round development of skills in these fields was offered to participants through interschool tournaments. G-IRL A-THLETES A-REN'T BORED A common interest in recreational sport is the tie that unified many of West's female population to form the Girl's Athletic Association. The fall membership drive contest got the ball rolling, and it was kept on the move by festivities such as a dinner at Grace Presbyterian Church and a Valentine party and by services to the school, which included planning the Memorial Day program and maintaining a booth at the Carnival. Although reorganization of the club has employed a portion of the activity of its members, the Art Club has given unestim-able service to the school. BEHIND THE SCENES Working in cooperation with the auditorium committee, the stage crew supervises the use of lights, curtains, scenery and props, and keeps all stage equipment in proper working order. May 4 and 5. The curtain rang down on how!s and laughter. Thirty seniors in a double cast presented Dear Papa featuring the wacky Carr family who had a talent for gettinq into one jam after another. Mr. Carr had been out of a job for several months and spent his forced leisure time workinq on an invention that he was sure would make a million. Laine, the 20-year-old daughter, received a letter from her wealthy girl friend saying that she was coming to spend a few days. This news threw the family into a panic. The inheritance did not actually belong to Aunt Lucinda; and when required to refund the money, the family was thrown into a dither for they had no way of paying it back. This seemed like the end, but lo and behold. Mr. Carr’s invention sold just before the pending disaster was discovered. Happiness in the Carr family was made complete when Laine and Aunt Lucinda announced their engagements. BASKETBALL Although West started the season with a smashing victory over an improving Henry team, they had heartaches in the next two losses by one point each. In the battle of the giants, Vocational's Bob Peterson proved just a little too big for Jev Baskin and Jim Springer as Vocational chalked up a victory. Size as well as inaccuracy in shooting can be accredited for the next four West losses in city competition. Then the boys from West successfully met a small but driving South squad. The Cowboys really needed their brands in the fire to emerge with this close but deserving victory. In the last scheduled game Roosevelt pulled through with a last quarter drive that found them victors over an ever fighting West team. In the final sub-district game Southwest pushed West from the running. 46 to 38. John Kapotas and Vern Harvester received honorable mention and acclaim from city sports writers and coaches. BOY-GIRL GYM CLASS Interdepartment cooperation at West has been exemplified by the union of the two gym departments. The fruition of their attempts was the success attained by the co-recreational gym class which was formed this year. Its members have learned many of the rules and techniques of game play in which boys and girls will participate after high school graduation. Volleyball led the parade of activities, but the program soon changed to individual sports. These included, among others, shuffleboard and table tennis; but participation in sports did not consume all of their energies, for they made much of the equipment they used in class. SAFE! E.
