Committees planned class day, baccalaureate and other activities for commencement. The class play, The Mad March Heirs, was presented May 12 and 13. Measurements for caps and gowns were taken in April—a sure sign that graduation was drawing nearer. Forty-niners —past and present—was the theme of the senior class and the forty-niner spirit was a part of all graduating activities. June arrived with Hesperian Day and graduation. We Govern Ourselves Second in Command This group is striving toward more student government. Membership includes upper classmen with the addition of two sophomores, an outstanding feature of the West Student Council. Solving school problems and securing privileges for the second in command are all in a day's work for the Sophomore Council, younger version of West Student Council. Guided by Miss Palmer, the sophomores represent the lower classmen and promote activities and services for them. That's the verdict of the student body as the members of the West band step forth in their new uniforms. Under the direction of Mr. George C. Krieger, Strike Up the Band West's musical talent performs at all home football games. West band has furnished many auditoriums on its own as well as accompanying other programs this past year. Our string to drum compound took part in the all city high school Centennial Serenade celebration, April 27 and 28, and also made a musical appearance at a Salvation Army gathering. Kathryn Elliott, Stewart Patrick, Beverly Severson and John Rollins broadcast over KTIS with Charles McMillen acting as announcer The band also participated in the tribute to the school patrols. Band members gain practical experience in playing all types of music—classical, modern and swing. Many members are preparing for vocations and avocations by learning to read notes and play in harmony with one another. Strolling past the auditorium during fourth period, one may see the band going through its paces for some special event or just general practice. One act plays by the drama group, the Thanksgiving program, Christmas assembly, Easter program, Magazine drive, Red Cross campaign, Twin City talent show, better driving—all were the work of this committee. Two programs were innovations this year. A program emceed by Cedric Adams, featuring talent from city senior high schools, took on the characteristics of a talent scout evening. Two speakers, a university exchange student from Germany and a Minnesota Span student, took us behind the scenes to see conditions in Germany and Czechoslovakia. Athletic assemblies and those assemblies furnished by Civic Interest groups are the only programs not supplied by this organization. Edlon SYvyy YWyWs ardin ! iime Kings of Swing In 1948 West was City and Twin City champions in baseball for the second time in three years. Probably the happiest day for the boys was June 9 when West defeated St. Paul Washington, 3-2, at Lexington Park. Battery mates, Pitcher Jerry Gebhart and Catcher Bob Hawkins were the best in the city earning well earned positions on the Sunday Tribune All City Team. Other boys deserving special mention are Ken O'Donnell and Bob Soule, both winning recognition on the city papers' All City Team. It's wonderful to have a championship school team. 1948 LETTERMEN B. The Team Fought On Never say die! was the spirit of the team, as it took eight straight defeats. Players showed a determined spirit throughout the season and never let up even though they were on the tail end of the standings. Only four men who had seen action in '47 returned. Two veterans. West lost three games by one point, and two by one touchdown. All five games could have gone the other way. It's a standing joke that when a coach has a bad season, he's building character. Captain John Chapman broke his nose, and colds and illness plagued the team. In the City Meet, West was in full strength and beat five schools. High man was John Chapman. Cross country is a sport where little praise is given unless the team's exceptionally good. Harriers find cross country calls for hard work and endurance. John Chapman, Doug Nelson and Dick Gruenberg deserve special mention. LETTERMEN D. Brandt J. Chapman D. Gruenberg D. Nelson E. Zarling 84 Breaking the Tape Plenty of meets was the cry of Coach Zavod-sky's thin-clads as they lined up for fourteen meets listed on the 1949 track schedule. From the Metropolitan Meet in April to the State Meet in June, West cindermen competed every Friday with a few meets tossed in during the middle of the week. Besides raising the number of track meets from last year's puny eight, the schedule also gave the boys home meets with Marshall, Henry, Vocational and Edison. Although this year's team was not so well balanced as last year's in some events, it made a better showing because of the great number of veterans. They're Off! T. Anbuhl, B. Merchant, D. Hetlam, J. Cowboy hopes were shortlived for the cagers were knocked off the title race by a hot Central team in the first playoff. Prospects for this season didn't look too bright after a sixteen point drubbing by Edison in the first glance, but the cowboys came back to win three league victories and never to lose by over five points. West was tough in every meet and in there to the last event. It might be added that the squad's losses were only at the hands of the top-fight teams in the conference. Condition played a big part in the team's success. Boys deserving special mention are Fred Nathanson and Albert Tsuchiya. Break 'em down! is the by-word when Coach llstrup's wrestlers compete on the auditorium stage. Although lacking experience, the grunters won two meets, coming in fifth in city competition. As no Cowboy was a regional champ or runner-up, West was not represented at the State Meet. As in years past, the boys went about their job without arousing attention or interest from the school. Golf and tennis squads each carried only two returning lettermen. Golfers were Jim Hazlett and Jim Kistler while Paul Pesek and Harold Street Racket Busters were the old timers in the gang of racketeers. Meadowbrook served as the home course for the tee men, and the Bryn Mawr Courts were the sight of the tennis squad workouts and home matches. Mr. A. D. The pitching position will be taken care of by Tom Hegland, Harley Hicks, Russell Miller and Ronnie Pierson while the catching will be upheld by Bob Anderson, Bob DuBe and Dale Gebhardt. Outfielders Duane Anderson and Bob Soule and shortstop Ken Barcel, all city electives, will be threats to any opponent. Rigid exercises and techniques come first. Patterns include leap, run-run, turns, slides, back and side falls and bounces. The basic techniques are then combined to form more complex patterns which are later presented to the class for evaluation. After the stiffness disappears the girls admit this body building exercise is fun. Also in line with body building is folk dancing. The square dances and folk dances provide entertainment for all concerned and review the fundamentals of this dance type. Girls' gym work includes some routine exercise, soccer, badminton, softball, basketball and kick-ball which help in coordination and bring about a trim figure. Outside school, athletic activities are golf and tennis. Coached by Mrs. Turner, beginners become amateurs on the links and courts, respectively, in a short period of time. These dances and exercises are enjoyed by most girls at West. Play Ball! C. THcimcr, E. Walcott, D. Kadrie Come on, Stretch! J. McNair, H. Sulcm, J. Watts, J. Gilmoro, A. Axtell, L.
