' oieuMi'ict School is over but memories linger—dances, coke sessions, club meetings, interesting classes, days filled with happiness and excitement. We graduate and enter a complex, rapidly-changing world —a world straining for understanding and peace. The knowledge gained and friendships earned at West will strengthen the determination to do our share that the world may know and love democracy. It is the purpose of this 1948 Hesperian to endear to our minds through pictures, script, and sketches the pleasant memories of our own West High School. Physical Education ’TJtertto'Ututt This February Mrs. Kathryn Corey Alden, head of the girls' gym and athletic association for twelve years passed away. Not only was she known for her work in keeping our girls physically fit, but her impressive Memorial Day programs and her supervision of the commencement processionals shall never be forgotten. Even though she is gone, her unshakeable faith and pride in the girls of West High School will forever influence our lives to see goodness in our fellow men. Late last spring we were saddened by the sudden death of our counselor, Mrs. Lockwood. During her twenty-nine years at West, she always lent a helping hand to all who needed it, and through her infinite understanding guided the students in their school problems and their preparation for the near-by adult world. Although she can be with us no longer, Mrs. Malva Lockwood will forever be engraved in our memories os an unforgetable part of our days at West High School. Class Day Committee Here are the January graduates as they appeared before the Great Day. Now that w ore on the yearly promotion basis, this s the last mid-term class to graduate from West High School. Because this was a small class, for the last term they have been in one advisory—the 302 study holl with Mrs. Jensen ond Mr. Chandler as advisors. The dessert party given by the P.T.A. lor the graduating Seniors has become a tradition ot West High School. This year's entertainment with an enjoyable program, was held in the Junior Ballroom of the Nicollet Hotel. Given on Jonuary 16. the Friday before graduation, it provided a delightful introduction to the commencement festivities. Corotyn Comaford, Roieanne B«llow . Queen Pot Brown ond Clellan Cord. Best in years was the unanimous opinion of students, faculty, and alums about West's 1947 Homecoming. The impressive auditorium, gala parade, and triumphant game marked it as a day we'll long remember. The program, with Clellan Card, as emcee, exhibited abundance of talent, homegrown and borrowed. The high spot was the solemn procession of royalty, the girls in green and white formals and their escorts in tuxedos. Queen Pat was crowned by Aquatennial Queen Pat McLane, West graduate of June, 1946. Led by the West High Band in their colorful new uniforms, the parade of gaily decorated floats wound its way through the uptown district and back to West where the awards were made. A perfect ending for the day was the rousing game with Southwest, won by our Cowboys who really did Skin the Indians. When the required twenty scribbled John Me's and Jane You's, they triumphantly were handed to swamped Mr. Morris, who dug into his card file of marks and passed on the pretender to the office. Nine hopeful candidates appeared on the stage in front of the approising looks of the senior student body to give their vote-snatching campaign speeches. Mr. Morris presented them. Each in order stored back at the sea of eyes and said, Vote for me. I'll do my best. Afterward the thinking seniors shuffled back to their advisories to mark their all-deciding X's. In our Class Will we leave this new, fairer election method to all those who make their woy to seniorhood. Advisor, Miss Jennie I. Hiscock COMMITTEE ON CLASS PLAY-Advisor—Mr. Chandler Chairman—Ed. One minute he's playing teacher to some little sophomore and the next he's back at his usual job as a plain, ordinary student. In his spare moments he visits the counselor's office to get an idea of the college he plans to attend. What a Life! Oftett Sofc iom ne4, - J 50 From a big fish in a little puddle, to a little fish in a big pond—It was a drastic change, but you took it in your stride, and gradually decided that West High wasn't such a bad place after all. In the fall you saw your first real football games and attended the dances afterward. Then came basketball, hockey, and all other activities that come to mind when we think of the good times we've had in high school. But of course everything at West wasn't social— you were getting a taste of higher education, and soon found that those A's and B's came just a little harder than they had before. As you got acquainted with the building, teachers, subjects, and rules, you began to dream of the days when you, too, would be seniors, allowed more freedom, and possibly more fun. Your tastes and pleasures changed and your friends along with them. Your fields were broadening, and you were becoming more mature. As the months sped by you began to feel that someday you, too, would be helping to fulfil West's proud traditions. 105 112 Row 1: Roy loden, Cormen Sadler, Ruth Knox. Row 2: Shirley Hesiod. Wow, are they flashy! Such were the cries of delight when at a special auditorium we first caught a glimpse of the band's new uniforms. Mr. Krieger, who had worked so long and patiently, thanked all those who had participated in the paper sales, music festivals, carnivals, and other fund-raising activities which had made the purchase of the uniforms possible. The interest and co-operation of Miss Holt, Mr. Morris, the faculty, and the student body acting through various organizations hod furthered his tireless efforts, but it was Mr. Krieger more than anyone else who was responsible for this long awaited event. The band had needed uniforms for a long time. It began back in 1924 when the first West band was organized with ten members. A year later white uniforms with green caps were bought. Although the band gradually enlarged, it was impossible to get more uniforms then because of the depression of 1929. Finally, arrangements were made with the WPA to have fifty coats made; the girls wore their own white skirts and the boys their own white trousers. The band continued to grow, and the school tried to supplement the uniforms but found it impossible. Still later coats were ordered, and after they came, two shades of green were always evident in the band. Since then West had hoped to have uniforms made by one concern. About ten years ago this hope was almost realized when uniforms were ordered, but unfortunately, changes came about that caused the cancellation of the order. Now that we have the new uniforms, we are proud to see our band resplendently clad in green and white as it marches. At their first appearance our exclamations of admiration were echoed by all who saw them . . . The class of the town! They're really smooth! Definitely West! West t%— Ediion Fightl That one word can well stand as a summary of the 1947 West football season. With a team which all of the so called experts labeled a question mark, coach Ancil llstrup and new assistant Lloyd Johnson were able to look back on a second place tie with Central in the final league standings. In fact, until the Cowboys' last game against Central that fateful night at Nicollet Park, championship fever was walking the halls of West. Undefeated in six starts, another win would bring the title cup to West for the second successive year. But first, let's get back to that word, FIGHT. In all of these first six contests, the Green Wave eleven either rallied to score the winning touchdown in the closing minutes or had to stave off the opposition's desperation drive for a tally that would spell defeat for the Cowboys. In their opener against Edison under the lights at Nicollet Park, the Westerners trailed throughout the game, 7-6, until Jerry Kelly smashed over from the two, with one minute and forty seconds to play, climaxing a 70 yard drive. Said coach llstrup afterwards, If we had lost that one, I'm sure we would have lost three or four more. On this point, assistant Johnson was in complete Row I: Charles Homp, Qrie Behmo, Paul Man . Then, with the championship gates open, disaster struck. Experts had rated Central, now out of the running for the title, as being ready to lie down and die. If this was so, the Pioneers came back from the grave to lash, pummel, whip and trample the bewildered Green Wave, 31-6. Central struck so quickly that the issue was decided five minutes after the opening whistle. In this game, the Cowboys were too astonished to fight back. Daily papers gave Jerry Kelly, runner-up scorer in the league and the boy who tallied nearly oil West points, an All City position. Team mates voted Mike Johnson, center and captain, most valuable for '47. South won the city crown on a 7-1 record and then went on to Twin City laurels also. A spot in the sun, or o spot in the ployoffs— both meant the same thing to Coach Ade Nelson's 1947-48 West Cagers. They attained neither. Dropping a decisive 16 point loss to South in the opener, it seemed that the Cowboys would have trouble winning even one game. None the less, in following contests a new fighting spirit appeared. This spirit brought home three wins and a tie with Marshall and Southwest for sixth place in the final standings. Furthermore, a little accuracy from the free throw line and the ability to hold a lead could hove turned another three close defeats into victories for the Cowboys. Most thrilling game of the season by far was the Edison tilt. Ploying a superb fighting brand of basketball, the West lads tied the score in the final second and then lost a heortbreakingly slim one point decision in the ensuing overtime. Coach Nelson used nine boys of about equal talent through the campaign. Four of these will be bock next year. Watch out! Eager for the face offl Just os the 1947 48 Cowboy Pucksters skated onto the ice for the final game of the season against Southwest—a game which would find one team gaining the fourth place playoff berth and the other hanging up its skates for the year — just then Faculty Coach Dwight McLaughlin turned to Artie Stroebel, star of the Minneapolis Miller hockey team and McLaughlin's assistant, and declared fervently, Gosh, I hope they win. They're swell kids. Stroebel nodded agreement. To shorten the story. West lost, 4-2. The reason? Throughout almost the entire contest, one, sometimes two and once even three Westerners were sitting in the penalty box. No team can play winning hockey when it is that short-handed. Hence, West finished fifth. Though not intended to be a sob story, this marked the first time, since Minneapolis high school hockey was revived three years ago, that West did not win the league championship and go into the State Tournament. However, the fellows undoubtedly enjoyed their hockey and a vote of thanks goes to Dwight McLaughlin and Artie Strobel for well done coaching jobs. Playing under the guidance of Don Houck, one of the finest coaches in the city, the Cowboys competed in an extensive twenty game schedule. Only eight of these were league contests, hence their twelve game practice date was the largest in the city. Houck, incidently, formerly played professional baseball as a pitcher. What makes any sport interesting is the unpredict-bbleness of it. These Westerners were certainly unpredictable and a serious threat in every game. They had a lot of spirit and that's what counts in the long run ' crackled Floyd Doc Chandler, West swimming coach, as he described his Mermen squad. Though this description is 100 per cent adequate, a few other points might be mentioned about the past season. First, league standings were determined by a round robin schedule of dual meets instead of one big city meet as was the case in previous years. Second, Cowboy splashers copped fifth on a .500 record of 5 wins and 5 defeats. Third, Rodney Grubb, Ken Gage, Jerry Ferm and Ralph Tyler were leading point getters. It has often been said, and rightly so, that the gymnasts never get credit corresponding to the amount of work put forth by the boys. According to the records, this year's Cowboy Gymnastic Squad brought back one of the top records of any West sports team. Therefore the 1948 Hesperian salutes Coach Louis Zavodsky and his charges who chalked up the following impressive achievements. Two third places, one in the City Meet and one in the State Meet, were inscribed in the record books. Then came the Northwestern Meet and a heartbreaking disappointment to the squad. This meet took place during the teachers' strike and as a result, no Minneapolis team could enter as a school. Even so, various members of the West team entered and won enough top honors so that unofficially, at least, the championship belongs in the West trophy case. All the fellows were good, but Coach Zavodsky describes Eddie Troch as one of the finest gymnasts with whom he's ever associated. According to the record books, the cross country boys won only one, and this from a Roosevelt squad badly weakened by sickness. In the City Meet, honors were equally scarce as the West lads slipped into seventh place. John Chapman was one of the few bright lights throughout the season as he consistently showed good form. However, benefits from participating in a sport can't always be measured by championship cups. Cross country built up these boys' endurance so that they could go out for other sports. That's what really counts. This same idea held true in track. Boys desiring to strengthen their legs for football next fall, put their all into track work. Jim Reed, of football fame, was better than average on the discus and shot put. Both track and cross country were coached by Louis Zavodsky. TRACK Row 1: Bob Merchant, John Rollim, Don Bjuitrum. Yet there is nothing minor about the effort and enthusiasm the boys playing these sports exhibited. Golf, for instance, offers nothing thrilling for the unappreciative spectator. Still, Coach Ade Nelson's lads worked ceaselessly under the hot sun on the golf links of Meadowbrook to better their scores. Little recognition came their way, yet they worked and enjoyed it. That's something for which they deserve admiration. In tennis, the spectator is able to arouse a little more enthusiasm due to the increased tempo of action. But judging from the turnouts at West matches, the racketeers under Coach Win Williams might just as well have been playing golf. Sad but truel There is no action in any sport more thrilling than the slashing forehands and vicious chops displayed in tennis. Hats off to these fellows who showed true competitive spirit despite lack of applause. All year around West girls ore on the move. Whether it's swimming at the ropes at Calhoun, skiing the slopes at Moon Valley, cantering a sleek pony around the Isles, or playing a fast game of basketball in the girls' gym, they like their sports and enjoy them to the fullest extent. At West gym advisors put the emphasis on smooth figures and posture. Each year we choose a posture queen to reign os an inspiration to all. Heading the year's events is the Memorial Day Program commemorating West's boys who gave their lives in the wars. An active group is the Girls' Athletic Association which meets after school a few nights each week. Here the girls enjoy basketball, volleyball, bowling, swimming, and golf. These all offer the opportunity to earn the school's W or the city-wide letter. In gym classes girls concentrate on exercises for body improvement, shuffleboard, basketball and volleyball. All are striving to build strong bodies as well as mental growth. Mik makvi a itrik . I ‘Diventiny, uiowiAiou The leaves on the trees began to fall, the air became hazy with smoke from bonfires, and although the days seemed just as warm and beautiful as ever, they were getting shorter and shorter. It was September, the time for hayrides, picnics, long walks, and, as usual—schooll That first Tuesday was really an exciting venture. Seeing all the old, familiar faces of friends, whom you hadn't seen since the June before, brought many an enthusiastic hello, and more than one shriek of amazement at the change three short months can make in a person. The jarring buzz that announced the beginning of classes interrupted the news-filled conversations, and we departed to our advisories to ponder over our awaiting programs. It took us a few days to straighten out our schedules, and get used to the feel of heavy books, and the idea of regular hours and homework. Teachers and students had to get acquainted with each other, too. THEN THERE WERE THE SOPHOMORES!! They're even smaller than last year's! Aren't they cute? and Could I ever have been as small as that? The seniors well-worn sayings were brought to life once again. The week sped swiftly by, and soon we found ourselves worrying about themes and marks, and how the West football team would do in the coming season. Then suddenly it was Friday, and that old feeling returned when we thought of the weekend before us. We knew then that we had settled back once more into the familiar routine. tyet Samet wy 7Va 4dded- West girls felt it was time for a change. Skirts dropped inches and it even became stylish to allow a ruffly petticoat to show a bit. Frilly Gibson girl blouses and silk scarves were seen on many. The New Look ? Certainly old stuff to Grandma! 0 , tye4, - The West High Cowboys displayed some new tactics this year, too. Not only were they good players, but, on looking back, we find that we had some mighty talented boys on our team. Below, the looks on the faces of a group of tense spectators could only mean that the Cowboys were in a tough spot; or maybe ballerina Dick Blumenthal was striking one of his classic ballet poses! Jerry Kelly really lived up to his name last fall. Many a game, while running for a green and white touchdown, he took time out to entertain his fans with an original Irish jig. Jerry Gebhart wasn't too interested in these proceedings, however. Instead, he practiced standing on his head when things weren't very exciting! Homecoming is the highlight of any football season, and this year was no exception. Queen Pat really did look queenly in her white formal and crown of flowers. rfttd- Suddenly, before any of us realized it, the first semester was practically over. The class play, China Boy, done by the Seniors held its audience spellbound. The best one I've seen, was the only comment heard in the halls of West after that great production. Then came the P. T. A. dessert party given for the January graduates. From all reports it really is an occasion to look forward to. Last but certainly not least came commencement and the gala dance at the Columbia Chalet. No words are needed to bring to mind this affair. The expressions on the faces of the dancers below tell only too well that the dance was a huge success. 7{Je 74Jo tt 'ponyet- Our cheerleaders who cheered us on to victory and pepped us up in defeat; or our quaint, little football scoreboard that always seemed to be two plays behind the game; or those all important report cards! How many anxious moments we spent trying to figure out what marks our teachers were recording. Then there were those happy days when the old routine of the classroom was interrupted by the taking of Hesperian pictures. One of the most hilarious affairs this year was the teachers' Truth or Consequences program. Miss Gude, the mistress of the gong, wasted no time in deciding that the contestants had not told the truth, so they must pay the consequences. The race between Mr. Baby Face Morris and Mr. Cutie Pie Kreiger left undecided which was faster—a kiddy car or a skooter. The milk drinking contest was more successful. With the help of Mrs. Kean, it was definitely proven that the bonnet bedecked Mr. Chandler was the biggest bottle baby in the show! Let's take one more glimpse around before we close our memories on another school year. The coeducational cooking class comes first. From the looks of those pancakes I'd say that West is raising a generation of chefs! The German club looks mighty happy about something. Could German really be that funny? One of the major events of this year was the new type of elections used by the June graduates. How well we remember those campaign speeches and all the petitions that we were continually being asked to sign. The locker room mirrors are something the girls will never forget. Somehow you never could get near enough to see if your part was still straight or whether you'd eaten off all your lipstick. Some scenes have significance only for the boys. How many hopes and fears lingered at the locker room door under the bleachers. All of us will remember the between-class talks in the halls. It was always so hard to explain to a slightly agitated teacher that we were late because of a worldshaking problem that just had to be discussed in those five minutes! Looking back on these and all the rest of the activities that come into one's mind when we start to reminisce, we suddenly realize that this year was 'Zfean, fo fa etne ttfanecL 'W M rfCt cd SacU cutc- This year West has enjoyed a varied program. The social, as well as the academic events have progressed ond changed. The new Student Dance Committee is an example of added entertainment for students. The idea of P.T.A. sponsored dances, hatched in Miss Breen's English class and fathered by Dave Hanson, has proven to be profitable as well as successful. Among other newly formed organizations this year are the Spanish and German clubs, which originated for the purpose of furthering interest in the people and customs of those particular countries. A senior counciling program to help students who have for some reason fallen behind in their studies was started by Miss Chamberlin. Seniors of specified qualifications were recruited to tutor, and the program worked out very well. The Achievement Club was also begun especially for those with outstanding talent. Its object is to furnish acts for West auditoriums and to fill requests received from other schools. Along the lines of specialized talents, there are several pupils who have made themselves prominent. Gloria Burkhart and Patti Trumble were both first place winners in the Stairway to Stardom radio show, Gloria playing the violin and Patti dancing. Edward Trach got to the finals in the Apollo Club music contest ond landed in second place. Harriet Sutton has gone far with her figure skating, placing high in Midwest and National contests. Both January and June graduates were faced with the problem of choosing a class play. The winter class chose China Boy and in spring What a Life was given. Another problem was that of electing officers. Mike Johnson received the position of president in January while Ed Trach was so honored in June. Sharing top honors in January, Janice Erickson and Carol Belsheim were Salutatorian and Valdictorian respectively. June found Mary Arthur Saluta-torian, and Arlene Johnson and Carolyn Comaford Valdictorians. A January graduate, Pat Brown, was selected Homecoming Queen and crowned in an impressive auditorium. Master of Ceremonies, Clelland Card, clowned with the audience throughout the progrom. Homecoming day ended happily with the football game against Southwest resulting in a victory for West. At long last the uniforms arrived to deck out band members royally. The athletic program has been increased by the addition of a wrestling team, headed by Ancil llstrup. There was another change in the Athletic department, but this was in the football coaches, llstrup replaced Tuck Teeter, while Lloyd Johnson came to assist him. A new public address system on the football field helped the student body to hear each play. As usual, there were changes at West. The saddening news of the death of Mrs. Kathryn Carey Alden, girls' physical education instructor at West for 12 years, necessitated an alteration in that department. Mrs. Remington became head instructor with Mrs. Levin as assistant. Miss Chamberlain is the new counselor; Mr. Johnson, assistant football coach; and a substitute for one semester, Mrs. Jensen, a January class advisor. The enrollment dropped at West in the past year, but the faculty has not diminished. A four week teachers' strike during February and March gave the students an unexpected vacation, along with a change in the graduation date. It necessitated school during the regular Easter vacation, and a prolonging of school for a week in spring. On the subject of beauty, it may be said thot the new look invaded the halls, but the question of how beautiful? is still being debated. The Gibson Girl in all her glory returned, along with full-back coats, filmy scarves, and ruffled petticoats. This has been a highly memorable year—one which the graduates will never forget, and which the undergraduates may well strive to match. rfc£wMvtedyme«tt4- The 1948 HESPERIAN extends sincere thanks to these people who have given us such valuable cooperation in the production of the yearbook.
