Olt, Such a Ijea i So fought and fairly won • FALL . Burt Eklund is cited as the Player of the Week on October 28, 1942, because of his outstanding football playing against Southwest. Averial Nelson gains the Wells Award for football. West wins City. Twin City and State Champion Tennis match. Ken Boyum captures the State Championship in Tennis. Donna Omholt, Dean Criss. Jean Northrop. Wallace Solseth, Eva Marie Giere, Paul Ingvaldson. Roberta Shelton, Ed Knopke. Ruth Lind, and Mary Bray win State Scholastic Awards. Lochinvar received five firsts; Hesperian, three firsts; Times, one first, in the Minnesota High School Press Association. 1942, in which West placed first. Harry McCarthy obtains a first in Humor; Chas. Wescott. first place in Short Story and Poetry; and Larry Davis, first in essay in Minnesota High School Press Association contests. Hesperian wins a first in Students Life snapshot section, original artwork in yearbook. and opening section in yearbook; and a second prize for an original yearbook cover. Lochinvar receives All Columbian Award for literary work for the second time. • WINTER . Don Smith and Helen Gonnella win American Legion Award. Eva Marie Giere. Mary Bray. Paul Ingvaldson. Jean Northrop, and Wallace Solseth obtain National Scholastic Awards in Art. Helen Gonnella wins the Star-Journal Award as the outstanding citizen at West High. Richard Strindmo wins Bausch and Lomb Award in Science. Don Smith receives the Hope MacDonald World Affairs Award. Mary Jane Kistler is awarded the West High Award for service. Tom Jacobson—Honor rating I. Tuba Solo. State Music Contest; twice State Tuba Champion; second place on the Tuba at National Music Festival. John Jennie—Honor rating I. Snaredrum. State Music Contest. Martha Sherer—Honor rating I, Oboe Solo. State Music Contest. Joyce Williams—Honor rating I, Alto Sax Solo, State Music Contest. Clarinet Quartet first in State Music Contest. Drum Quintet first, Nelson, Day. Putnam, Bandler. Jennie. S. M. C. •SPRING. . West placed second in the District National Forensic League Tournament. Arnold Aberman placed first in Victory Speakers' Contest. Viviene Greene placed first in Poetry Reading and first in Extemporaneous Speaking. In the Regional High School League Tournament, Marilyn Lindstrom, Ann Berman and John Forsman all received Superior Rating. In the District High School League Speech Tournament Arnold Aberman and Viviene Greene were added to the list of Superior Ratings mentioned above. Lochinvar again wins Medalist from Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Dorothea Paulson wins a Columbia Writers' Club award for article writing. West entered seventeen drawings in the 1943 Regional Scholastic Awards exhibit, and took fourteen awards. Ed Knopke, Roberta Shelton, won first prizes in the Regional Scholastic Awards Exhibit. Louis Angelikes won $10 in war stamps for receiving second place in Minneapolis Civilian Defense Council Poster Contest.
