As we study the 165 years of our nation's life we find it a continuing fight for the four freedoms. Our literature dramatizes this great story in stirring addresses. novels, plays, essays, and poetry. Speech and creative writing classes train the student to express his ideas clearly and effectively, and it is for this same freedom of expression in writing and speech that American men are fighting in all parts of the world today. EXPANDING THE SOCIAL VIEW • History and social science analyze the forces which have built and destroyed nations. They help us understand the factors responsible for the present world struggle. They explain the measures which must be taken to prevent another world cataclysm. . . . Languages, once a barrier between nations, are gradually binding countries closer. They are of vital importance in the war efforts. Armies and governments everywhere depend upon instant, accurate translations of code in radio and telegraph. . . .
