Assistant Principal • Like the intricate Control Center of the Civilian Defense Corps, the different departments of the office force have specific duties to perform. In addition to their important advisory work, they have become coordinators between the students and the Victory Corps, the Army, Navy, and Marines. The Counselling Department works with the Student Council in Red Cross, Community Fund. Blood Donorship, Defense Stamp, and all other drives. The office force as a whole cooperates with draft boards and N. Y. A. All of this additional work has widened in scope because of the needs of the government in war time. High school graduates who have the ability to pass special tests are being offered unusual opportunities. There are the V-5 naval aviation training, and the V-12 army and navy officer training courses: also the officer training in the U. S. Marine Corps. ■ MRS. MALVA LOCKWOOD . . . As we study the 165 years of our nation's life we find it a continuing fight for the four freedoms. Our literature dramatizes this great story in stirring addresses. novels, plays, essays, and poetry. Speech and creative writing classes train the student to express his ideas clearly and effectively, and it is for this same freedom of expression in writing and speech that American men are fighting in all parts of the world today. They are upholding the glorious traditions of our American history and free education. • Top Left Picture: MISS ALICE KEAN . . . English and Blue Tri; MISS RUTH H. HILL . . . They help us understand the factors responsible for the present world struggle. They explain the measures which must be taken to prevent another world cataclysm. . . . Languages, once a barrier between nations, are gradually binding countries closer. They are of vital importance in the war efforts. Armies and governments everywhere depend upon instant, accurate translations of code in radio and telegraph. . . . World Problems and Foreign Policy discussions expand the regular class work. FOUNDATION TRAINING • Science, mathematics, social studies, law, home economics—as varied as the complex life of today. The student receives his initial training in the technical language and formulas which are the foundation of future professions of medicine, pharmacy, engineering, social work, business, and law. the wide horizons beckoning the ambitious ones. Business classes, science, machine shop, and gymnasium are bending every effort toward these goals. Pre-flight aeronautics offers training in the principles of airplane structures, human factors in flight, aerodynamics, airplane engines, meteorology, communications. and air navigation. Art classes contribute to the war effort with posters, recognition silhouettes for plane spotters, camouflage and pictorial war maps. JACQUELINE KRIEGER They Lead in January Class • Since this was the smallest class to graduate from West in almost a decade, its members had much opportunity to become well acquainted with each other. The class resembled a large family in which each child steps forward to make his way, aided and encouraged by the others. Many talented students were discovered during their years here at West. Class day proved that they were especially capable in their various fields. Four members exhibited unusual qualities of leadership. Richard Davis played football and hockey, was active in school musical organizations, and took part in the class play. Mary Kistler headed the class play committee, took an important part in the play itself, and was also a Student Council member. Tom Jacobsen efficiently managed all auditoriums, played the tuba splendidly, and entered state musical contests. Helen Arthur was a member of the Student Council and through her affiliation with G. A. A. was active in many sports. Should they join the armed forces? Should they look for jobs in defense plants? Should they enter college? These were the vital questions that faced them. Several enlisted even before graduation day. A few chose to finish their education at West High School, and prepare for technical work in the war. Representative Seniors RICHARD DAVIS. MARY KISTLER. Many of them have already entered the armed forces of their country to do their share in a victory which will assure these same advantages to the next generation of Americans. This class, as a whole, took a very active part in leading the school through all the various projects to aid the war effort in the Red Cross, Bond selling, etc. In an American school, everyone has an equal opportunity to excel in whatever interests him most. Dorothy Babcock. Susan Kuehn, and Lyle Hoffman found their chief interest in scholastic achievement, and led their class in that field. Others received high honors in writing, speech, art. music, and athletics. A few have already qualified for the V5 and V12 United States government training courses. These boys and girls have passed a few more smiles around, a few more good words, through their games, their studies and their service to the school. You are the witnesses —they are the ones who must soon lend their weight to pull the old world back on her feet again. They are just the ones who can do it! Typewriters click os editors and cub reporters alike put their best efforts into the pages of the TIMES. . . . LOCH INVAR, the magazine product of West’s creative writing classes, has brought the school into the national literary limelight. In it. the dreams of youth find artistic expression in poetry, essays, and short stories. . . . It gave them a glimpse of various phases of journalism, and an incentive to go on with their writing. Who knows, but some day we may be reading books, magazines, newspapers, written or edited by members of this year's staff of Quill and Scroll or the Hesperian. Making the most of our intelligence would be a good motto for the members of the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. These students maintained a high average of scholarship during their years in high school. They possess ambition and perseverance, qualities which are especially important in every field of endeavor today. QUILL AND SCROLL • Loft to Right: Isabella Hie. An auditorium to raise money for embarkation kits for soldiers—donation of money for sewing of stars on the service flag—sponsoring of Sunlites—Victory Book Drives, bringing in many hundreds of books for military camps—these are only a few of the projects which show the spirit of unselfish service characterizing these groups. . . . In the SERVICE CLUB there is a group of HIGH SELLERS who sell candy and fruit in order to raise funds for the necessary activities of the school. You have probably seen them wearing out their lungs, appealing to the football stands to buy their wares. . . . The WEST HIGH STAGE is manned by a group of boys, who put all their free time into the interesting hard work of preparing the stage for plays and movies. This year the club has given several successful dances and parties. . . . The SEMPERS gave generously to the war chest—nave been prominent in social and athletic events all year—gave a farewell dinner dance for the graduating seniors, a tradition with this club. . . . The SPURS Hi-Y gave one good dance besides aiding in many Hi-Y activities. These boys direct induction ceremonies, promote the Hi-Y membership drive and pre;ide at all joint Hi-Y activities. . . . Nearly all the old ALLAS are now in the armed services. Although this has somewhat handicapped the club, the boys are making a fresh start. Their present endeavors include making the most of their share in the war effort including book collections and selling stamps. . . . The CXC is the oldest Hi-Y in the U. S. and still going strong, as a school leader. They gave the Football Opener Dance, the first party of the year. A smaller club than in former years. Quality not Quantity is their motto. They have given their members and time to aid the war effort. HI-Y CABINET • Left to right—Tom Wickham, B! There are several interpretations, but the best is believed to be Reaching for the Stars. . . . The PAX are noted for ability in many types of social events: but they, too. have a serious side. They have donated money to the Red Cross, and have taken part in the city-wide Hi-Y Victory Book Campaign.. .. The LOX are noted for their selling of war savings stamps and for keeping the lunchroom clean. These groups, like the other Hi-Y's, are always ready to carry on projects that build a better school and a better community.
