WEST HIGH SCHOOL LIBRAR 2803 Hennep:n Avenue Minneapolis, Minn, 55408 THE 1939 HESPERIHll PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF WEST HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA j • Courage, initiative, and independence, the virile forces that predominated the character of our forefathers, are encouraged today at West. Only by keeping faith with the builders of America may we sustain and endure as a nation. We have striven to perpetuate in our hearts and minds the activities and leaders whose chief thought has ever been to stimulate, to educate, and to release our personalities into channels of service. TO THE GRRDURTinG SEOIORS • In adopting the theme of service, the graduating classes this year are making a real contribution to the youth of the nation. The idea that young people owe something to their community is refreshing. Youth in America always has been courageous and not afraid of hardship or obstacles. The world owes us nothing. It is the business of every person to make his own way and stand on his own feet. Such a life of independence is worth living. Those who are thrifty, ambitious, and resourceful can live such a life. The greatest adventure and the greatest satisfaction in life will come to the student who rises through his own efforts. NOBLE B. First: Each course offere thought of extending ing and making mutated with the rtunity for acquir-of its subject. Second: Each of our instructors is for his particular branch of education to present his subject to the oest.'a jmJ Third: Groups and associations embodying art, music, expression, social service, and all athletics serve as the important supplement of our well-planned curM -j These three principles are of service in broadening our knowledge, igivtng expression to our talents, and , developing our character. When we absorb their advantages to our greatest capacity of learning we are able to reciprocate by serving ourselves, our school, our community, and our country. This constitutes our Code of Service. The outstanding quality of the West eleven was its amazing backfield. A complete victory over Marshall was given by the scoring punch of Kelley, Bradford, Thomas, and Sauer. Playing under a blistering sun, the Westerners scored in every quarter to pile up points. The South Tigers were the next to meet West High on the gridiron. The high-riding Cowboys wero not so fortunate, though, and dropped the game to the Orange and Black. A sustained march was halted by the Tigers on the two-yard line to climax the startling upset. Resentful at being held scoreless by South, the West gridders tallied five times to vanquish the Maroon and Gold of Roosevelt. During the more quiet moment the Service Club performs. In spite of a severe handicap, the West Warriors led Central at half time by one touchdown. The superior reserve power of Central finally prevailed. The West team fell beneath the cleats of Edison mainly because of bad breaks. The Polars of North High froze out the Cowboys in the last game of the 1938 season. The crowning achievement of the season was the fine spirit displayed by players and spectators at all games. 100 FOOTBALL SCORE West Opp. 6 Edison 14 6 Central 25 0 South 14 13 Washburn 7 21 St. Thomas 12 6 North 13 26 Marshall 0 32 Roosevelt 0 And then you havo a clear field, Dick. 101 Guard your man. and watch those passes. In the Roosevelt game the Teddies came through in the closing seconds to win. The other games showed a remarkable improvement in the playing ability of the Cowboys. The Tumbling Club trains seriously after school hours to develop perfection of movement. This club competes as a team against other schools. The team was seriously handicapped by the graduation of some of its more experienced tumblers. The showing they made in the city meet was commendable. Captain Mel Hendrickson of West, was the outstanding man throughout the season. He won the state championship in the 50 and 100, and set a new city record in the 100-yard. West defeated by a comfortable margin all schools but Roosevelt, to whom they lost by one point. The first league swimming meet was against Central High School. The Westerners captured six of the eight first places. Edison High dropped the meet to West by a margin of 37 points. West again won six of the eight events to top Washburn. Under the supervision of Miss Katherine Cary and Miss Frances Sandell the girls have proved that they are a part of the coming generation by their eagerness and vitality. Fencing, riding, volley-ball, field-hockey, first aid —all these arts have they mastered, and many more. If one should chance upon the girls’ gymnasium at any period in the day he would likely find girls busily engaged in playing basketball, practicing correct posture, trying out Modern dancing or perhaps, working on the rings. A few years ago the Girls Athletic Association, commonly known as the G. A. A., was organized. Joining this club enables the girls to participate in tournaments and work for points which are necessary in earning a W. 100 Round and 'round thoy go and where they stop nobody know . No, they'ro not waving—it’ Modern Dancing. There's a right and wrong to everything, and this is pretty obvious. Get that ball up and over. 109 m «© G. A. A- BOARD Row I. Swanson, Moorhead. Reminiscing in Medieval times we find fencing brought up to date by the West High Fencing club. This difficult sport develops poise and skill in those who master it. Through the efforts of Bob Jamme and Martin Fisk the fencing club has proved successful. Bob Jamme distinguished himself by winning second place in the State Fencing Contest. Galloping down the bridle path sends a thrill through anyone. True to Western style, our riding club has accomplished wonders this year, and has displayed some excellent horsemanship under the tutelage of Mrs. Zoe Walker, Miss Catherine Murray, and Mr. Earl Mer-field. Feminine eque$tfien learn tho art of horjomanship . . . BASEBALL • Under the enthusiastic tutelage of Don Houck, the baseball squad prepared for a successful season in '39. Wilcox. Peterson, Thomas, and Bradford returned as lettermen from last season. West placed third in the city league last year. First place in the Carleton invitational meet was awarded to the Cowboy nine in '38. This is symbolic of the state championship and is the third consecutive year that West has been so honored. An enthusiastic crowd was treated by this foursome to one of the fastest half-mile relays ever seen on the University of Minnesota's indoor track. A repetition of West's winning the state championship is yet to be verified. However, Dick Kelley and Bill Alexander, two state record holders, are sure to place high if not on top. As we enter the race for the city title and trophy, the Cowboys are heavy favorites to place in the win. Winworth Williams, history teacher, coached the Cowboys to first place in the Carleton invitational meet. Also this team took another second in the Minneapolis league. For many years the raquet squad of West has ranked high if not first in the state. With last season's three veteran players, Gulden.
