The 1935 Hesperian forsakes a dedication, a theme. Annuals before have tended to compel your memory to follow their ideas, their originality, their trends of thought; this January we intend that the Hesperian act as a stimulus to your own memory, your own ideas, thoughts, and efforts. A yearbook is primarily a cross-sectional record of its school. With our own standard set, it is readily seen that we could not, in the realm of possibilities, make this Hesperian a minute record of the fall semester. That record lies within the grasp of no one person or group of persons. It rests secure in the recesses of your own memories. When you glance through these sections, these cross-cuts of West High School, may they awaken and enliven the hours hours of victory and defeat, joy and sorrow that you have spent within its walls. If this book achieves this, if it acts only as the prompter of your imagination and remembrances, then those efforts have not been in vain. you rests the dedication of your issue, with you rests the determination of the theme it shall follow for you, with you rests the completion of all its started thoughts, and now, with you, we rest. NOBLE B. SCHOONMAKER For one semester we have observed this man under fire. He has not failed. To make a success, a definite, progressive success within the first months is commendatory of both the school and the man holding the reins. A new era, of which we have experienced but a mere start, has been instituted at West. Democracy . . . licensed liberty . . . diversion . . . education . . . and 8UCCO8S. H. O. JOHNSON A man taking as good a picture as this that is, if you know H. O. Johnson shouldn't be wasting valuable time (and there's an argument there, too) saying exceptionally witty and pithy things to January classes. Not that the pose is natural, nor the expression representative of Johnson geniality. He saves that look for all special occasions, which in the life of a senior adviser grow more numerous year by year. And he's not slow; he just likes to take his time. As a Senior Adviser he deserves a place at the top of the list. MRS. ALICE KEAN Somewhat like the player who came in about the third inning and put the first one over the left field wall. She spotted Mr. Johnson one term of association with the seniors as adviser and proceeded to make up that time. That she has succeeded with the girls as he did with the boys there is no shadow of doubt. And if her picture is not so high, it is the fault of the layout. Her place is there at the top with the other two. Under a new manager, the school got away to a fait and early lead ... a score for tho new principal. Noble B. Schoonmakor. .. . West'i triumph over the traditional gridiron rivals is worth six points on anybody's score card. . . . Mark down one each for Captain Ernie Green and Art Dudley for their performances on the green. .. . Harry Woodworth's name is entered on the list for the efficient and pace-setting policies of the Weekly. . . . William Powell and Myrna Loy under the circumstances receive their recognition for being the most popular actor and actross of the school body, as evidenced by a school-wide poll. ... All sort of markors to Ruth Bloomgron as Miss West High . . . and others to Maxine Benson. Patty Jerome, Virginia Buckloy, and Muggs Pierson. . .. We don't need to rate tho PWA painting seige they chalked up their own. • . . Johnny Salisbury scored with “I’d Have Shown Shakespeare How . .. . The alumni tallied with their own newly organized unit. . . . Green and White day was worth a double score. . . . The unusual number of vacation days gees on the books for some reason or another. . . . Ono of the finest orchestras in the history of West wins its spurs. . . . The Class Play Committoe pulls through with a modern play and the cast carries it over the top for sevoral medals and such.... Rocent sound picturos at the noon periods start the band-wagon. ... A drive launched against cheek-to-choek dancing. . . . The referee decided that the B Senior advisory be halved. . . The Intellect retired and was succeeded by an unknown champion in the columning game. . . . Whitosel, Wood-worth, and Hockman carry oil honors in state-wide |Ournahsm contest. ... A score for the Glee Club in obtaining the scores for the operetta “Sweethoaris , but anothor score when oxponso turned the decision to Prisoners of Penzance . . . . The Hi-Y clubs are on the board with a successful season of hall duty, and the Winx widen the advantage with the Y football championship. . . . West takes its place among veterans, broadcasting for the third time. . . . The sports editors of the Weekly get the jump on the entire field announcing their all-city team one week before any other paper, Green and Dudley placing. . . . Alden Grimes, Maxino Benson, Charlotte Westberg and Lewis Enkema win hands down in tho B Senior elections. . . . They aim at tho records held by the tetrad comprised of Reed, Schell, Gregory, and Stivers. . . . Hugo Wickstrom succeeds Fred Curtis as swimming coach. ... Kelly and Morrison battle the Pueblo. Colorado, debate team in a no-decision contest.... Student dances lost rating this year. ... Competition isn't so great, ..The Blue Triangle rang the gong with its Turnabout Program Dance. .. . The drive for a longer lunch hour still bids for its place at the top but compstition in that field is stronger this year than over before. . . . Carl Jackson and Miss Maud Beck chalk up a woll-rounded score on appointments as Athletic Director and Girls’ Athletic Director respectively.... Art Dudley boosts his score being awarded tho Wells Trophy. See Sports Section.... Johnny Lenox as President of the Student Council played aces and trumps throughout the gamo to bocomo ranking man in his field. ... Plans to uniform the band rate tho umps’ nod. . .. Tho Service Club scores with helmets for the gndders and suits for tho paddlors. . . . The second period rally against flunking carried through into the third and, although leading at this stago of tho gamo. tho outcomo is pending. . . . Now rules woro prevalent this season; the most drastic being the prohibition of passing, forward, lateral or otherwise, behind tho ond of tho period. . . . This yoar the eligibility of the passer and not the pass-receiver was especially stressed. . . . Liberal opinion is that it tonded to destroy the wide-open game but the oificia) ruling is that it makes it more efficient and of greater value to the team. Some difficulty was encountered in growing familiar with the new rulos but the season has not yet reached its climax. . . . Ruth Chnstoffer and Francei Lang rate tops for maintaining a perfect record for three years. Co-valedictorians ... Don Dahle completes a successful campaign as All Hi-Y President. . .. Guy Corson and Ed Olsen clash racquets as pretenders to the tennis throne. . . . Biggest political issue of the year was the choice of picture studio. ... For still other champions refer to the Hall of Famo. . . . The school club league admitted two new members to the circuit, the Stamp Club and the Sociology Club. The sound equipment in ths auditorium gains popular favor with the school. Thanks to the PTA.... The course record was broken on two occasions this season. Once at the dinner welcoming the new principal and again at the banquet for John N. Groer. . .. Bill Evorest must be ranked .. . And the two kids who put the big bang in September. ... The clothing collection collected a first place in city-wide competition. ... The fact that this is the only semi-annual in the Minneapolis high schools is a record of some sort. . . . 'l.ssistant head of this class is MARION SCHELL, vice president. As Studont Council member and an honor student she proves that sho is indeed deserving of tho honor bestowed upon hor by her classmates, and sho has fulfilled the trust to the utmost. Athletically inclined, she takes an active part in tho G. A. A. and W club, and is on the Athletic board of Control. She further plodged hor service to the school upon her ontranco into tho Sorvico club, and she was rewarded for hor untiring oiforts by oloction to tho vice presidency of that organization. Marion's plans for the futuroare still Indefinite, but it is certain that wherever she goes her friendship will be sought, and her future work will undoubtedly be as outstanding as her activities at West have been. Addicted to class presidencies is DON REED, head of tho A Seniors, who has wielded the gavel in his division ever since the start of his career in Calhoun grade school. His experience as a Student Council member from “way-back has given him valuable training as a legislator, and it has also given the graduating class an unsurpassable leader. As sports editor of the- Weekly, he has demonstrated his ability as a news reporter; as ad managor of the class play, he has shown originality and perseverance that excels all othor advertising campaigns; as vice president of his Hi-Y club, the CXC's, he has illustrated leadership Sualities and cooperative onthusiasm tat have assured the succoss ol many enterprises. Despite the long hours this group of activities demands, Don finds time to pursue his studies with so much intensity that ho is a member in good standing of the National Honor Society. Class Officers Class Officers Richard wilson dick stivers has been known as the right honorable chancellor oi the Sonior exchequer ior a year, and during that time has earned for himself the roputation of being a most excellent treasurer. Businesslike at all times, he is capable of helping to direct the activities of the graduating class as is shown by his election to the presidency of tho Sociology club. He plans to enter the University of Minnesota next fall whoro ho will take up an academic course. Dunng his stay at West he has been active as a member of tho track team, and has been interested in all ether sports. His work also includes servico on the Round Table and in tho Student Council. Unassuming, but outstanding, he will be remembered as a true example of a representative Westerner. jfjLfter commencement, when IEAN GREGORY takes up a new life in Chi , West will point with pride to the really remarkable record she has attained during her three years at Wost high school. Besides being a class officer, Jean has been active on the Student Council and a member oi tho National Honor Society. She has had a finger in evory extra curricular pie since sophomore days. Jean officially lives in Chicago, to which she moved last spring, but wishing to complete high school in Minneapolis, she remained in the city, visiting her home during vacation. Soon after commencement she will go to Chicago to live and will attend Northwestern University in the fall. When one joins a club or group he is specializing in one certain definito field. And specialization is the bulwark of all modern society. The forty-odd clubs of West offer as many certain chances of individuality and open the portals to countless others. Each of these groups is dedicated to a purpose and strives to arrive at its goal. It is of no purport that they deviate from the lines of strict adherence to principles in good-time interludes of parties, dances, and saturnalia; the significance is that that general end is not lost. It would be of inestimable worth if we could here render, one by one, the purposes of these organizations. That we should not do so is only excusable. In their stead we set forth, according to the projects and meetings during the last term, a few of the many highlights which the clubs have projected upon the school. First and foremost, the Student Council. The student government body this year sat in court upon most of the school issues. The case of the firecracker. In pursual of ideas relative to student government, representatives visited other city high schools. Results revealing that West's system is being further adopted. Th e Service Club continues its sales, and the football and swimming teams are now a good deal of equipment to the better. Th e Upper Class Club had an activity a week four remembered are the drive against cheek-to-cheek dancing, the Turnabout, the Christmas party for 40 children and the Senior tea. Probably the most universally popular activity was the Blue Triangle Program Dance at the Y. W. It is a matter of estimate how many parties or dinners the Silver Triangle had a hand in. There was one December 20. All things being equal, just what would West do without the Weekly? Answers are already flowing in. The school's biggest iron in the fire. And the Marionettes doted on one-act plays the entire term. A good deal could be said about De Pol. Mention of the debates is sufficient. And when the Spanish Club celebrated Christmas on December 10. Th e Stamp Club, to all reports, is trading at a fast and progressive rate. This has become standard copy for nearly every Hesperian. The Radio Club has added to its equipment. W9ERT is one of the best. Th e Chess Club, entered in the Twin-City Chess League, is strongly represented. As this goes to press, that representation is preparing for its first clash. Plans for the Aero Club glider were actively started with the construction for a wing and a tail. In Senior history, 1934 was the most active year for the Kamera Klub. The seven-minute film of West High life was the best of the productions. Th e Hi-Y participated in seven different projects and movements this year. Combined also with the annual membership drive. Recognition for all the activities of all seven Hi-Y clubs would reach from hero to there so only the mention must suffice. The G. A. A. went onto an active policy this year. Members were participants in diversified programs. T., e biggest plank in the Boys “W Club was the successful Green and White day featuring the ”W men. And what about Madrigal's sleigh ride and bean feed? The Glee Club's smash-hit of the year is coming this spring. The operetta “Prisoners of Penzance . Promises of new Band uniforms make this a singular year for that organization. The school will start the coming football season with a new band and a new coach. Ho was especially effective at his dofonso post of roving contor. Team mates rale him the deadliest tackier on the team and all-city raters cited him as the nerviest center of them all . Tho history of tho Wells Cup is still young. Donated by Bill Wells, all city center for last year, it is only fitting that the trophy go to his successor. Georgo Poeselt, to whom it was first awardod, and Art Dudley are now the only names on the cup. Before the start of the city prep race the outlook for the Green eleven was very gloomy. Then, after West tied the favored Cretin aggregation in a night gamo and followed this with a hard-fought victory over Washburn, it was prophesied that the Cowboys might turn out to be a dark horee. In the season's opener September 28th, the Westerners had enough of that well known fighting spirit to down by ono countor the moro experienced Orango and Blue squad. Green, playing in both the line and the backfield at times, turned in a sterling performance and indicated an ability worthy of allcity honors. It was the burly Cowboy leader who snared Abbot's pass in the second quarter of the game and plunged across the goal line for West's only touchdown. Central, which had alroady established itself as a leading contender for the Minneapolis high school football title by crushing Roosevolt tho wcok before, was the next opponont that the Honnepin Avonue boys had to meet. Ineffective blocking and punting by West on two occasions resulted in two touchdowns for the Red and Blue, which was all that the highly-touted Markley-men could accumulate. Laurie Abbot and the diminutive quarterback, Roy Thelen, were outstanding for the Green and White on tho offense. Overconiidonce caused the downfall of the Green gridders in the following woek's game with Edison. This was tho first and only tilt in which West was favored to como out on top, and this unusual turn of affairs apparently dulled the aggressiveness they displayed so oiton whilo they woro considered inferior to their opponents. The 18-6 setback by the Inventors was the moat stinging defeat of the season. One man beat West in tho gamo with North on October 19, and that player was George Faust, sturdy polar fullback. His oducatod toe provided the fiold goal which was the only scoring gesture of the battle. Roy Thelen and Art Dudley starrod for West, while Brighton Eddy succeeded in matching nearly every one of Faust's prodigious punts. Again in the contest with Marshall the following wook tho stubborn Groen and White moleskin warriors stopped their foes cold during tho first three quartors, only to succumb to a crushing attack which netted three touchdowns for the Cardinals. Entering tho next game as rank underdogs to the undefeated South team, West showed surprising strength to accumulate more points in this one game than in all the other tilts put together. A rejuvenated Roosevelt grid squad spoiled the Cowboys gala home-coming celobration of November 9 in the season’s windup, giving the Green and White crew a record of six defeats in succession. In spite of West's poor showing in the league race, its fire and team spirit always made it a team to be reckoned with. Chief laurels go to the Cowboys' pudgy leader, Ernie Green, who. although he was not the guiding genius of the eleven, provided the incentive for the greater part of our scrappy fights. 4‘ He received a practically unanimous selection for the guard position in the allcity team. Art Dudley and Roy Thelen. inferior only to Green, were outstanding in their places of center and quarterback, respectively. Seniors have witnessed every one of the Miss West High elections. The first year, as A Sophomores (an average) we saw and probably helped Anna Virginia Hughes become the first girl to climb the throne. And in rapid succession, Dorothy Naegeli and Coralyn Bush attained the signal honor. The fourth we are concerned with. Ruth Bloomgren is the Seniors' is this Hesperian's Miss West High. And though these contests extend into the years, though many and beautiful girls gain the title, the name and_memory of Ruth Bloomgren will remain as the Miss West High of the 1935 January Class. HOLIDAY Th e Class Play Committee started a quest for a different vehicle for the January production, and found it. Thoroughly modem, clear-cut lines with much imbued humor, even gag lines, fast, and of the high standard West has always maintained under the coaching of Miss A. Pauline Sandboe. Holiday'' was an excellent choice and excellently done. The leads were carried by A1 Bevier, Goodwin Alarik, Adelaine Salmon, Elaine Heneghan and Mary Alida Gile. A sparkling play by Philip Barry dealing with the daughter's rebellion against the moneyed smugness of the rest of the Seton family. MISS AGNES HOLT MISS MARJORIE SPAULDING It would be difficult to tell for which of her commendable characteristics Miss Marjorie Spaulding is most loved. The members of her girls' advisory and those students fortunate enough to have studied civics under her guidance will agree that the personal and kindly interest she displays toward each student is especially deserving of praise. Humor, wit, and natural ‘niceness' are qualities which combine towards making Miss Spaulding an outstanding personality. W„h sympathy, patience, and understanding, our assistant principal has gained the deserved respect and admiration of the student body. These qualities were manifested during the illness of Mr. Greer last spring when she took over the executive duties, and since then during her daily contacts with the student body. Besides the strictly school affairs, Miss Holt is a close follower of the various West sports. She is still stronger rooter for student participation. WINWORTH WILLIAMS In Mr. Williams, the boys' adviser, we have a person who has done much toward raising the lowly pun to a high standard of humor. His raquet is tennis and he is no mean expert at the said game, teaching his talents to would-be Bill Tildens under the position of coach of the West tennis teams. In regular hours Mr. Williams is an instructor in American history, and geniality is the trait that students emphasize in commenting on the joys of wars and constitutional amendments. Taking thud place in tho Metropolitan meet, the Cowboys wont on to take fifth place in the Carleton Invitational meet. Captain Bob Hanson, closely followed by his fellow hurdlers, Clint Lostetter and Roger Barton, has showed his heels to practically all competition in the high and low hurdles. Bob set a new record for the 60-yard high sticks in tho Metropolitan, and the trio have placed one-two-three in almost every hurdling event, Joe Hayes in the century dash, Wilbur rrepojchal, Chick Wright, and Dave Robb in the distances, Doug Tracy and Jack Galloghor with tho discus and shot, and Ray Johnson in the broad jump also turned in fine performances in thoir events. “Uneasy lieth tho crowned head” is a proverb that might easily be applied to the West High tennis tournaments. Lewis Enkema, because of his position last year as number one man, was regarded by many as tho leading raqueteor while Ed Olson had even a better claim, being the victor in the fall tournament. Hammerland, who won first place in the city meet two years ago, is ranked as one of the loading golfers in the high school ranks. Tho Cowboy squad, who were runners-up last year, has lost only two men by graduation and is expected to set a high mark this season. I his year tho tumbling team brought a new honor to West and to itself by capturing the Northwest Championship Gym Meet, competing against the best loams representing the northwest colleges, high schools, and Y. M. C. A.’s. The meet at which the gymnasts of Minnesota succumbed to the superior skill of the Green and White took placo at the new athletic building at the University of Minnesota. West is the only high school to win first placo in the all-around competition during tho twenty-five years that the meet has been in existence. Sid Wolfenson obtained the highest number of points in tho C class. Bob Hanning, Eugene Shavitch and John Sandberg ranked after Wolfenson in tho ordor namod.
