This statistic ex- plains the season. The team played steady ball but failed to get enough of the breaks to produce wins consistently. But the team competed well and was a force to reckon with in the league. The team boasted several outstanding players. Lou Perez played brilliantly at first base and received the Babe Ruth Tro- phy for 1968 by vote of the players. john Lindberg was the team's heaviest hitter and did a fine job in the outfield. Scott lkenber- ry, selected for the All -Metro Team, played excellent ball down the line. All in all, despite the disappointment of too many losses, the team had much to be proud of. Sophomore Sophomores had an up-and-down season even though the team had basic ability and played well together. A lack of se1f-confi- dence, however, took the cutting edge off their game. The team 's outstanding player was Ernie Guerero with Ray Fleer punching out the highest batting average. Other out- standing performers were Doug lkenberry, Phil Hawkins, and Fred Krebs. MM ' Q Class Cf I968 lnvocation l968 Our Father, we pause in reverence tonight and ask Your guidanc e as we recount the well -favored years behind us and anticipate the doorway to history. History is a voice forever sounding across the centuries the laws of right and wrong. Opinions alter, manners change, creeds rise and fall but Thy moral law is written on the tablets of eternity! We ask Your blessing tonight upon the Class of 1968 as we gather together for a last for- mal presentation. . .for the ways of men must sever. . . and it well may be for a day and a night, and it well may be forever. Doorway into History Seventeen, eighteen, nineteen years ago, a child was born. Almost two decades have passed since then - exciting, history-making decades. Tonight that child stands before you, poised for his own first step into his- tory. We, the Graduating Class of 1968, are poised on a threshold, and for us, for a mo- ment, time stands still. A step into history. What a grand idea those words convey. What pride, what power our hearts holdwhen we say those magic words- our own first step. But is this truly our first step? No, we have had to take many practice steps, preparing for the step we take tonight . Our very first step was taken when we crossed the echoing corridors of our child- hood and first school years, with our hands clutched tightly in lVlother's or Dad's. Mother. Father. Two people who have helped us so lovingly, who have taught us so much. ln school we have learned to read, to write, to do arithmetic. But our parents have in- stilled in us the intangibles of living. They first taught us the meanings of love, integ- rity, and so many other elements that form the final being of our characters. We don't often take the time to tell our parents how much we love them, and how much we ap- pre c iat e the things they have done for us. Tonight, however, each of us wishes to say Thank you to our parents. Thank you for leading us this far through the hallways of education. Twelve long years of formal schooling lie behind us, but tonight those years seem to have passed in a minute. We can't quite re- member when arithmetic turned into mathe- matics and reading became literature , every- thing has woven together so smoothly. But year by year, our knowledge has expanded to ,avi-6 3 , Q l,: 6:X Lima Wil BN'--3 T ,, 0 vida' fx? reveal wider and wider horizons, until now we see before us an entire world. Although we didn't know it at the time, those twelve years of education were spent in preparing us to goforth, to help shape the world. The time has come for us to put aside the robes of the student and put on in their place the respon- sibilities of adulthood. But before we take this final step of our high school career, let us pause for a moment. In returning to the present from the memo- ries of our childhoods, our minds must necessarily pass across the memories of our last three years in school. ln doing so, we try to memorize each face, each day, each happening. For tonight is our last night to- gether, and we may not pass this way again. Tonight, West High School's Gradu- ating Class of 1968 stands before you as one person, sharing in the memories of our high school years. Thus far in our lives we had walked those hallways of education as through a mist, not knowing of the doorway we approached. To- night, however, we have reached the end of a corridor, and the doorway of our futures stands before us. Tonight that door stands open, beckoning to us, as we care- fully and cautiously, yet bravely and proudly step up, and poise on the threshold. I 351W f 'ff' f It's A Beginning Marcus Mitchell brought honor to our school when he represented it in the track meets. He started running at the age of nine and found that he enjoyed it. He didn't realize the im- portance of running until he entered high school. As a sophomore, Marcus took 3rd in city and second in state in the National AAU. As a junior, Marcus was undefeated, setting or tying six records in the state. He tied the city record for the 100 yard at 9. 6 and the state record for the 220. ln the summer he set records in the Meet of Champions and While qualifying for the National High School Meet, he set a record in the 100 at 9. 5. At the National AAU meet Marcus Won the 100 yard at 9. 6 and going to Oregon for the National High School he took second in the 100 and first in the 220. He was 2! 10 of a second off from tying the national record. In the fall Marcus was selected to go to Mexico to observe the olympic games. His first Week was A filled with tours to museums and shrines. He stayed at the World Youth Camp and met many others Who have the same ambitions as he does. He gradually learned about and under- stood others around him. Before viewing the Olympics he saw many demonstrations of ballet. After going 60 miles from the youth camp to Mexico City, Marcus was able to meet and stay with several athletes and found them very helpful, especially the Germans. He prac- ticed with several of the athletes and found his stay most enjoyable. Marcus feels that he runs best in the 220 and wants to break the national record of 20. 8 by running 20. 7. In the 100 he Wishes to break the record of 9. 4 by running 9. 3. He had dreams of viewing the olympics and now that he has accomplished that, he will go on to compete in the olympics and fulfill that dream. if i w ff '.i3?E5 , . q,Af4f H. ., , Q 1 Y ,gf 5 .
