Her unfail ing good cheer and desire to help made West High's library an open book to all who used it. Her generous spirit and Warm smile are missed by all. Thank you, Edna. We'Ve elected you Most Valuable Person in the West High League. Our Best Wishes to you on your retire- ment. the most precious of gifts : Themselves Mrs. Jacqueline Moulton Agood teacherniakes a good school a better place to be, and West High is a better place because of Jacqueline Moulton. Her years of service have not been manyfa bare eighty, but they have been significant in the warm personal relationships she built with stu- dents, counsellees, and her fellow teachers. Young pe ople knew her as one who would listen, sympathize , and helpg those who worked with her Knew her as a dedicated, vital pe r s on Whose great ambition was to build better lives for kidsI'. The Wound is yet fresh and it is difficult to say goodbye. Thank you, jackie. Student Council: Always Building ..,... H s ia I0 ' School Spirit West's Student Council, under the sponsor- ship of Mr. Donald Webb, c ons is te d of twenty dedicated covvpunchers, who labored mightily to maintain the traditions set by previous councils. School Spirit has been the biggest problem that faced the council and it was shown in the sales of Student Athletic Tickets. Council's re sponse to the problem was grass roots interviews with all fourth- hour classes. The many suggestions received from concerned students helped council lick the problem. RL Why 'U xx. 6 if 59 Wests Top Wranglers Smooth was the Word this year for West's Head Boy and Head Girl, GaryNitta and Linda Maes. From their induction in September through the last hurrah at gradu- ation ceremony this spring, Gary and Linda have been in there cor- ralin' Cowboy spirit and building a better West High. Good students and ACTIVE, they have a history as people on the move and movers of people. Thanks , Gary and Linda, for your leadership and s e rvioe both to the class of '68 and West High. What Would We Do Without Them? These groups, sonietinies taken for granted, are forever working for West High. Building school spirit and encouraging people to pair- ticipate in school activities are but two of the many ways in which the in e ni he r s of these groups make our school ai better place to learn. A Reflection of People, Building, Achieving, Striving . . . Aa. .n.! '5 E 'S x 4 S 3 7 1 vi W MMAWR' ig' 17 Let's do the QQ if Funk Broadway Dances this year ranged from semi- formal to formal, from school dress to dress -up, from junior-Senior Prom to Homecoming, to the Sophomore Party, and to a junior Optimist Canned-Food Dance. And West Cowboys were in there swaying and rocking at every one of them -whether 7:00 A. M. in the Boy's Gym or at 9:00 in the evening at the Brown Palace. The bands were great. The Rock was jumping. The turn out was steady. Everyone agrees: Dances are the greatest. l Cheerleaders Radiate Spirit Another rootin-tootin group at West is the Cheerleaders. The team consisted of four Seniors and two juniors this year. As Well as sparking outside interest in West by marching in parades and such, the Cheerleaders create inside interest by leading the Pep Club in rousing cheers at all school activities. The Cheerleaders are elected each year by the student body. They are led by Miss Nancy Wall and are supported by all. Being a member of West's Pom Pon Girls squad is an honor as Well as a school service The girls must maintain a 2.5 or better grade point average, and furthermore, they must bring all of their enthusiasm, spirit, and de termination to all major and minor sports ac tivities. WESTER ER: Big Changes Hey, Cowboys I This has been a year of changes for your WESTERNER and its staff. Although the page margins have been trimmed somewhat. WESTERNER is bigger and better than ever! The '68 WESTERNER has been expanded by twelve pages, from 184 pages to 196, in accordance with the wishes of the student body as expressed in the 1967 school-wide poll. Your continued support will enable your year- book staff to build an even bigger and better book in future years. The obvious improve- ment in photography is Mr. Lloyd Cowherd's doing. He has given generously of his time in assisting and directing the photographers . Club Section! Karen Zoltenko, Cindy Hughes, and Carol Garcia. my - t ',f'i,,,,,. Zzf . But there were two big changes in the routine. First, the Staff helped with the production of the PUBLICATIONS AS- SEMBLY and sold RODEO Subscriptions for one dollar each. Second, the Staff sold copies of the paper before and after school on distribution days . Nine regular editions and two special editions, the CHRISTMAS and SENIOR EDITIONS, were published. Mr. Charles Dyce, Faculty Business Manager Home, School, and Communit West High's P.T.A. works hard to provide services and assistance to our student body. The Fall Membership Drive enables P.T.A. Officers to allot money to the various funds and services they render. In addition to these services, the P.T.A. organizes day and evening meetings which bring Parents and Teachers closer to- gether. These meetings include a BACK TO SCHOOL GET TOGETHER, an EDU- CATION BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL NIGHT, FATHER AND SON NIGHT, a MOTHER- DAUGHTER TEA, ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT and SCHOOL COMMUNITY DAY. From Annual Dues and money-making pro- jects, the P.T.A. serves West High in every possible Way to promote Student Wel- fare and encourage Parent-Teacher par- ticipation in School affairs . Nirs. Eight finalists are then selected to attend the six day meeting at Temple Buell and C.S .U. The Participants elect Government Officials, all the way from Governor to Dog Catcher, participate in meetings where Parliamentary procedure is mandatory, and finally elect two boys and two girls to represent Colorado in Washing- ton, D .C. at Girls' and Boys' Nation. Through these extensive and exhausting six days, the Students acquire a tremendous knowledge of Government and its functions. 29 Pages and Escorts Brighten Graduation Last year's Junior Escorts and Pages sparkled at graduation festivities. The escorts dressed in attractive mint -green dresses and carried bouquets of silver and raspberry to add an appealing contrast to their dresses. The pages were dressed in white tuxedo jackets. Sponsors for last year's Junior Escorts and Pages were: Mrs. Barbara Hedges, Mrs. Mary Parthum, and Mr. Gordon Jacques. There are many other boys who Will do better as they gain ex- perience. I think that the boys have done a real good job this season, because they never quit trying and they never lost their drive and desire. This was the result of a lack of experienced wrestlers on this year's squad. The outlook is good, however for next year's squad. Four wrestlers: Vic Mora, Gary Young, Frank Lopez, and Frank Ortega, won well deserved placings in the City Tournament. Although we did not have a state champ this year, Vic Mora and Gary Young advanced in the state tournament. Gary was eventually named as runner -up in the 133 -pound match of the state championships. Starting the year with a 6-1 pre-season record, the Cowboys then earned Well-deserved wins over South, Thomas jefferson, George Washington, Lincoln, North, and East while losing only to Manual and Kennedy. In the city tournament, the Cowboys staved off determined bids by Jefferson and Lincoln to advance to the tournament finals where West met the North Vikings in one of the most exciting games in Denver Prep League history. The Cow- boy supporters saw their determined team come from be- hind in the first quarter and take a brief lead. As the game progressed, the lead changed hands with neither team apparently able to gain a sizable advantage. It was not until the clock showed less than a minute to play that the contest was decided. The Cowboys were behind by one point, 53-52 with possession of the ball. With less than fifteen seconds showing on the clock, Richard McLaughlin tried a desperate layup that bounced harmlessly off the backboard. The final buzzer sounded and ended the finest Cowboy basketball season since 1943. Statistics told the story of the 1968 season. As a team the West High Cagers boasted the strongest defense in the city. With Gale Newbins and Gary Rhoades minding the boards, and Louis Perez, Ken Jackson, and Aaron Carruth- ers pressing on the outside, Cowboy opposition rarely scored higher than 55 poinm per game. Gale Newbins and Gary Rhoades provided strong offensive punch. Gale fin- ished second in the city scoring race with Gary following close behind. Gale was also named Denver Post Prep of the Week, and placed on the second team. Ken jackson and Aaron Carruthers also received an honor mention on the all-city teams. Prospects for the next year's squad are encouraging. Lack Skill And Experience This season's record was 4 wins and 12 losses. The sophomores beat Lincoln, North, and Manual twice. They lost 5 games by 3 or less points. The team this year had good height, but lacked speed and good shooters. A great deal of improvement was shown throughout the season by all the boys and if they will work on some of the fundamentals between now and next season, the variety next year could be real good. According to Assistant Coach Vitolo, the strength cen- tered mainly around the defensive play of the team. With a tight infield, and an alert out- field, the sophs look to keep the opponent's score at a minimum. This may not prove to be an easy task because of an inexperienced pitching crew. To complement this, the ab- sence of heavy hitters may be a factor in the final outcome of future games. The accumu- lation of valuable experience looks to be the most important gain of the 1968 sophomore baseball season. Coach Sabell gives players a rousing pep talk. Among the many activities of this department have been breakfasts, a Host and Hostess Tea, and a Home Economics Bazaar. Along with new facilities in our Home Economics Di- vision, we were fortunate to acquire Miss Jonasson as the new department head. As a result of her interest and that of the other teachers, many of our students will be able to prepare for their future home- life. Mr. Brunner, head of this year's Indus- trial Art department, and other shop teachers did a terrific job of helping our students achieve excellence in such skills as mechanical drawing, woodcraft, machine trade, metalwork, printing, and crafts. Their careful assistance has helped prepare many of our boys for vocations and careers in Industrial arts related fields. , 5, Y., K at 'R 59 F' I V f, W ,,.,, , i.,-,, - ,. ,,... , YE A A ATKINS, -JUDY B. s. 21' - J' .Q , 1 if A , ,159 A J ,. .iff '.-, H al-5 V, JONAssON, GEORGIA B. s.
