Z, --A GARY BRON End DAVE ALLEE LARRY nd Cowboys make a desperate attempt to overcome a speedy South player. Denver League Hands West Winless Season West's Cowboys found this year's Denver Prep League to be one of the most annihilating in many years. Hopes were high during the preliminary training for a good football season as all the city teams showed strength on both the bench and in the starting lineup. The Cowboys opened against North's Vikings who were predicted to win the Denver Prep Title. West's first game was one of its finest of the season. North started the scoring, but missed the extra point. The scoreboard stood still until the Cowpokes came to life in the third quarter. Dick Geist, from his own l6-yard line, cut through North's defense and outran the Viking secondary to pay-dirt, Roger Bowman put West in the lead 7-6, by adding the extra point. When the final gun sounded, the scoreboard showed the Vikings victorious by only 6 points, l3-7. The best game for West in the second round was played against South. The Cowboys held the Rebels, city co-cham- pions, to a l9-O finish. Game by game, however, West's chances for a win grew dimmer. The Cowpokes fell winless beneath each of the over- powering city teams. Dick Geist and Ron Ratliff, co-captains, were selected for the Rocky Mountain News all-city team. Head Coach Girtin discusses the previous game with coaches Karamigios, Wilson, Garramone and Mahar LXDICK CHERRINGTON Guard Co-captains Glrtm ot S0 Happy With '55 Season I've been asked to review the '55 football season. lf the score tells the story, then it's a sad one. l believe, however, that there is always more than the score in any game or season. A good team has what I call a combination of the five S's - spirit, speed, savvy, size, and skill. Let's see how West's Cowboys measured up in each category. Spirit includes that inner desire to play, to win, and the will to do it. Since it is a drive from within, demonstration and coaching won't create it. During the current season there were sparks of this spirit, but they were erratic and soon burned out. Never did the spark last an entire game. The student body at West, particularly the pep groups, were al- ways pushing us on. They gave us exceptionally good support when they could have logically done otherwise. Our team was lacking in speed. Geist and Martin, our two speedsters, were hampered with injuries much of the time and couldn't operate at full steam. Savvy or football in- telligence, which embraces a knowledge of the rudiments and fundamentals of football, was lacking. As far as size goes, our boys were small, and let's face it -a good big man will beat out a good little man any day. Now for the last S, skill - in blocking, tackling, ball handling and the like, well we had no one who was outstand- ing. Ron Ratliff was among the League leaders in punting, however. l hope I've explained at least part of the story that the score doesn't tell. l'm not making excuses for a winless sea- son, but we just didn't have the right combination for a win- ning team. The coaches who assisted me did top-notch coaching all season, l am very grateful to them for their constant effort and encouragement. l hope the '56 season will be better for all of us at West. As the Cowpokes came up against Manual they rallied up enough skill to hold the Thunderbolts to a 3-3 tie. Second round scores were repeats of the first with the ex- ception of the Manual-West meet. Manual netmen outlasted the Cowboys to win by a 5-l score. Darrell Adams, Dick Bowlin, Cal Crowell, Clarence Haviland, and Roy Henry, all of whom are seniors, were the only experienced lettermen this season. Next year's golf team should make a better show- ing. Weishaupl will be the only loss due to graduation. Fouts broke two records at the Greeley-West meet, the 50- yard free style and the lOO-yard free style. The Cowboys found the Greeley poolmen to be easy competition and slipped by them 68-48. The speedy 'Pokes, by skillful maneuvering, held their opponents to a narrow margin win, 55-48. A torrential rain of losses followed the Cowboys until the second South-West game when the Cowpokes won 47-46. The West victory didn't affect the standings, but it was a tonic for the downtrodden cowboys. l've never seen a bunch like this, Coach John Karamigios said after the game. West's second game found the Cowboys trimming East 7-4 which put the 'Pokes in a tie position for first place. West lost its hopes for first position when Ron Maynard and Bob Beer were de- clared ineligible due to their playing in the YMCA Baseball Tournament for the Den- ver area. Two wins turned into two losses, which dropped the classy 'Pokes into last place. 'Coach Adams, however, sparked his boys to triumph in the remaining games.
