We have had a campaign to help keep the school clean, and a dance kit made up by the members of the Council. The dynamic safety assembly was also promoted by West's primary student or- ganization. We can thank them for the new records which are used for morning and noon dancing the only proiect of this type in all the city high schools As the Council felt that the Star Spangled Banner was one of the ideals of our ountry it questioned the fact that our anthem had not been playea at the league games Although other schools in the city helped promote the playing of this song it Was through the initial action of our Council that this movement snow balled and be ame a reality One very important task of the Council was that of recelving the club constitutions This was done to see whether or not the clubs were functioning as their constitutions stated This ac tion was called for by the administration to help make each club an important functioning organ of the school This organization brings many honors to our school It annually participates in such city and state-Wide activities as Student Council Camp Council Capers and the dance put on yearly with the Denver Symphony Orchestra 'J The death of Blueline X I ' Q ,, . We, too, at West feel that good speech is an essential to effective living. As a result, the Competitive Speech program began as an extracurricular activity in l952. Due to its growth in number and importance, it became a part ot our curriculum in the year of l954. It provides a challenge to the gifted students by giving them an opportunity to excel in speech. This activity develops public speaking tech- niques. 0 The Competitive Speech program includes tour areas ot study which are: interpreta- tion, original oratory, debate, externporaneous speech. This is well stated in the club motto The golden key to happiness is service. Teachers girls and classes call upon the members for assistance in connection with many different activities. The Lariatte Executive Council, pictured on the opposite page, is composed of one repre- sentative from each guidance class. This group is the governing and planning body for the club. This year the D Club reorganized in struc ture and purpose in an effort to make itself more efficient and to be of greater service to the school In cooperation with the Assembly Committee and the Student Council it has made great strides in keeping better order during as sembly programs Through the issuing of Identification Cards to each student enrolled at West it has assumed the responsibility of keep- ing outsiders from entering the building In order to be a member of this club one must be awarded an athletic letter in one of the sports at West High School that is recognized by the Denver Public School Athletic League. Membership is the aim of every boy at West who is interested in athletics. The purposes of the club are to help uphold the standards set by the school, improve the morals of the school, provide social activities for members of the athletic teams, improve the caliber of the team, and promote the Spirit of West that knows no better! Jgiemgg Commiffee To most West High students the orange jack- ets of the Assembly Committee have come to mean better and more orderly programs. The purposes of this organization are to schedule all assemblies, contact speakers and entertainers, see that programs are carried out, usher, and see that order is maintained. It was first organized, as we know it today, in i940 and helped make the first Singing Christ- mas Tree possible. Since that time it has given us many programs of which we are proud UIILOI' 6055 The basic philosophy of the Iunior Red Cross is people helping people Most of us would like to help those less fortunate than ourselves but we have neither the money nor the knowl edge to do so Iunior Red Cross offers West High boys and girls this opportunity to help both in Denver and abroad, through activities and projects which are closely connected with school subjects. The basic project of the council this year has been a school chest which will be sent overseas. lt is to provide one classroom of children all the necessary health, education, and recreation supplies for one year. jufure .lacderri ofjdmerica This club is organized to give first hand in formation to those students interested in teach ing as a career and to render service to teach ers Members are given an opportunity to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching field by actually teaching classes tutoring pupils assisting teachers and grading papers This year the members have visited various elementary schools in an effort to become better acquainted with all levels of teaching 552111 y Oflllllltfet? pI'0l'l'l0f05 effel' l 09l'al'l'l5 1 Y' How 3 Miss Olson Faculty Sponsor Sue Wilson Vizma Zarins Wayne Bowl Dona Beyer Steve Kill on Terry Keepers Presid nt Gaylord Holder Vice P M St ll AIB Btt D R 2 M Wil F 1 P d tA1 D P Ch ierce yrna iga urger e y avs ow iss r ens acu ty resi en an umm roqram an-man Sponsor Victor Chavez Or ole Fuller Iohn Shupe Marlene Post IoAnn Brown 9 C e .
