ofewa TAl6...i'FoRwARD Harkl D0 you hear it? The throbbing beat! beat! beat! of a tom-tom heralding the cowboy chronicle-our Pow Wow of '54 . Our high school years are the interim between childhood and adulthood --a step of a ioumey that requires many steps. Our journey is like the one which led the Indian of yesteryear to America. His journey is recorded in history-ours is history yet unmade. It is for this reason that we have chosen the American Indian as our theme. West is like the Indian society. Our wigwam is West High School itself. Our totem, or symbol, is the West cowboy. The chieftain is our principal, and the council of elders our faculty. The tribe, our classes, represent the various stages of Indian life from the tenderfoot to the full- Hedged brave. Our clubs, organizations, dances, and parties are like the ceremonials which were an integral part of Indian life. Our heritage from the Indian can be seen in the skills displayed by our athletes. Like Indian warriors, they possess agility, speed, and endurance, coupled with their own will to surmount all obstacles that block the path to victory. The Indian's strength lay in his social and religious patterns in which each person had a place as a part of a spiritual world as large as all nature. West is the same. Our strength lies in our unity, school spirit, and our ability to organize and work as a whole. We the students of today, like the Indian before us, can exert a tre- mendous iniluence on the future. On these pages are to be found the record of our high school accomplishments-on the pages of tomorrow's history will be found the record of our further achievements. The throbbing of the drums grows louder. They beckon to us, urging us forward. As you turn the pages of this annual, feel welcome, for YOU are a part of the Pow Wow of '54.
