Although the Cowboys won only two games they played high caliber football most of the time and with a few breaks could easily have ended the season near the top of the bracket. Top honors go to PAUL HULSE upon being selected on the ALL-CITY football team. The standingscd the league: South firstg Manual second: East thirdg West fourthg Manual fifth. S O P H O M O R E F O O T B A L L West High sophomores nailed downFthe CITY CHAMPIONSHIP after soundly beating South 15-O. The sophs played their last game of the season against the Rebels. Jerry Foster and Ward Watson, Cowboy tackles, opened up gigantic holes in the Confederate forward wall. The backfield standouts were Quarterbaoks Richard Johnson and Jerry Morris. End Gene Orvis played an outstanding game at the left terminal. The Cowboys, with three wins and a tie in four starts, wound up as sole possessor of the top spot. Other league standings were: South secondg Manual thirdg East fourthg and North last. V A R S I T Y B A S K E T B A Lpg B A Another 'Basketball season has come to a close in Denver's prep cage competi- tion. Don Taylor stepped into the center spot vacated by ailing Charles Darling and led South Denver's Rebels to a thrilling 48-47 overtime victory over ManuaL Taylor's game winning free throw, sparked the southsiders to the second consec- utive Denver prep cage title. Special congratulations to PAUL HULSE upon being selected on the ALL-CITY basketball team. Other league standings were: South first, Manual second, East thirdg West fourthg and North last. Manual copped the State basketball crown this year. S O P H O M O-R E B A S K E T B A L L West s second 'team defeated East to finish the '47-'48 basketball season with FOURTEEN VICTORIES OUT OF FIFTEEN GAMES. Standouts for the season were sophs Ted Fuller, Bob Pryor, Earl Sandstedt, Don Grout, Frank Ray, Andy Vassios, Ed Choury, Richard Johnson, and Gene Orvis has been high point man in almost every game, averaging ten points per game. Prospects for next season look good. W R E S T L I N G Nor,'E rT's cRy champions lived up to their advance notices in defeating a hard working Cowboy wrestling team, on January 25. Jerry Morris, heavyweight, was the only man to place for West. North holds three consecutive city wrestling titles. They easily captured their fifth straight state high school wrestling tournament. East finished in the runnerup spot, and Golden and Fort Collins were tied for third place. West was present in the State tourney with five competitors: Franklin Brown, Amadeo Gomez, Tony Lujan, Don Elders, Dan Levine. S W I M M I N G For the third time in twenty-three years South broke the East strangle hold on city prep swim ing honors by capturing the Denver High School aquatic title. East took second place, followed by North, while West and Manual came in last. G O L F A N D T E N N I S West's golf and tennis teams wound up their season with fair to disastrous results. The golf team met with fair success by tying North for third place. The tennis team occupied its usual cellar-dwelling standing. Eldon Allen was easily the outstanding Cowboy netter. T R A C K '47 I very weakfhand of Cowboy cindermen pulled the curtain on another dismal season. The 1947 edition tallied a pitiful two points in the city meet. Keith Richards topped the Cowboys in total points and was a consistent winner in the hurdles, while Walter Seastone and Roy Klamm gave good performances in sprints and mid-distance runs. Honors in the pole vaulting division went to Sherman Yamaguchi, Don Holzer, and Don Groves. B A S E B A L L '47 West's 'Baseball 't'e'5m wound up the season in last place without one victory. PAUL HUL E made ALL-CITY with Bob Pryor receiving honorable mention.
