N145 WE DEDICATE this Annual to a true interpreter of music, one who has brought music to us in an understandable fashion, and who has made it exciting and inviting. He has directed our band at football games, pep rallies, assem- blies, and has led our orchestra at plays and operettasg he has made them the best school band and orchestra in the City of Denver. He is known by everyone in the school for the kind of person he is, friendly and efficient, never letting others down and never taking a day off. Like us he has been a student at West, and now he is a teacher developing musicians and music lovers, creating a new interest in lives that before had no means of expression. We know that he will keep on doing the work that he has been doing, and in the manner that has become his characteristic trade mark, because he is happy that way. The Class of '46 is honored to dedicate its Annual to you, MR. PIKE. 1- 1 I -uf 1 ll If ff 4 7 r l 1 ,l PEACE DEDICATION When the lights came on again all over the world, and the tloodlights once more streamed over the statue of liberty in New York harbor, they symbolized the light that is coming to the world, the light of wise understanding that means Tk the dawn of everlasting peace. The wish of the Annual Board was to express ap- preciation in behalf of the entire faculty and student body ,by dedicating one page to these three grand teach- ers, but we have honored their requests that no pictures and only a very modest space be allotted to them. Mrs. Couden, Miss Ford, and Miss Hocking, we all feel deep gratitude for the years of friendship and asso- ciation with you and wish you every happiness in the future. To be graduating from West High School along with you, the members of the class of l946, is the priv- ilege of those of us who are retiring from the faculty in June. ln the coming years, we like you shall be seek- ing new experience and new opportunities for usefulness in life. We all agree that a more capable person than Mary could not have been found to do the task of keeping the books and minutes of our class. Mar is always ready to lend a helping hand, in a most pleasant way and iilled her position successfully. JORENE GROVER Treasurer Honors to Jorene Grover for her keen interest in the Senior Class. Jorene was chosen treasurer of the Senior Class and has really helped to make it a success, She handled the job of col- lecting Senior dues in a capable way and we, the Lights of '46, wish to express our gratitude to Jorene for do- ing her work and doing it well. Head. Girl Dorothy Hoglund Lovely to look at and nice to be with is our first semester head girl, Dorothy Hoglund. Dot served on various commit- tees, some of which are lnter - School Council, Finance and Assembly. If our lunchroom and hall conditions lagged, Dot was right there, doing everything possible to improve them. Dorothy, with her sweet and cor- dial manner, kept the friendship and admiration of all un- derclassmen as well as of Seniors. FIRST SEMESTER CLASS OFFICERS Jack Rudey Jack Rudey served Head Boy West during the first semester as a capable and willing head boy. Not only outstanding as a leader, but a hustling back on the football squad and wrestling team was our shy and bashful Jack. As head boy, Jack had a real job to do, lead- ership to establish by example, and to promote the spirit of friendliness. We are all proud of the work Jack has accomplished, espe- cially since we list him as one of our newcomers to West High. BILL BURBANK President Our first semester Senior President was tall, lanky and we might add polite Bill Burbank. Bill is one of those boys who can be depended on at any time and anywhere that he is needed. In ad- dition to being a very capable officer he served well on the football and bas- ketball teams. During the years that Bill hashbeen at West, he has made many friends both in athletics and in the sociel field. MARIE MCDONALD Vice President A super personality characterizes red- haired, good looking Marie McDonald, Vice President of the Senior Class. Marie, known for her ability to accom- plish anything she starts, assisted the president in every possible way. There was nothing that was put before her which she could not undertake, and she managed both the work of the vice- presidency and one-half of the Annual art work with ease and speed. NICK GREGORY President Nick Gregory took over the job of being Senior president with the same sort of will and initiative that he used in handling the wide variety of other jobs that ave been his, His friendly ways, his ever present originality, and his all around personality are just some of the things for which we will remem- ber the second Senior president of the Class of '46. FRANCES H ICKS Vice President Vice presidents seldom do anything, so the job was an easy one to fill, but Frances Hicks found work to do and did even more than was demanded of her. An outstanding member of each of the many clubs which list her as a member, Frances lived up to the ideals which many aim for but few succeed in reaching. Georgia Woelbing Georgia Woelbing Head Girl has never been known to slip up on the job, everyone who knows her, whether student or teacher, can testify to that. During the period that she has been at West, she has set her sights, kept to the line, and arrived at the target in the best of fash- ion. Positions of lead- ership have been hers all along the road, and all of their responsibilities have been met in the right manner SECOND SEMESTER CLASS OFFICERS Bruce Earhart Head Boy Great efforts di- rected in the right places usually mean success, and in Bruce Earhart's case there was no exception to the rule. Ever since coming to West, Bruce has followed the trail that has led to the highest posi- tion in the school- head boy. The run of the mill type of person never climbs that high. Rounding out a school career of leadership and citi- zenship combined with other favorable virtues, Bruce has set the pace for those to follow. JU N E BURKY Secretary June Burky is known by everyone as one of those who possesses the three V's-vim, vigor, and vitality. Giggling her way through thick and thin, June has been one of the secretaries who are different-just different: she is the kind of person that says hello to those she knows on days when elections aren't held. SHIRLEY STEPHENSON Treasu rer Talent, personality, and a friendly attitude are mixed together in the right proportions by Shirley Stephen- son, who sang her way into the office of treasurer one election morning. Shirley must be mad about money, because she has held the position of treasurer in more than one of the school clubs., , H 552:52 LIGHTS SPONSORS Haflseo fchairm aio 6254 SENIOR CLASS DOUG-VX UL GOURXIP WE THE SENIORS are searching out the right path from among the many to be followed. lt is a long and hard job, but the seniors have had a lot of fun along the way, as well as their share of good hard work There are many events classes and homework . . . music AlGNES KRPXCSA that are only memories now '. . . par- and mirth . . . football games and lo ties and proms . . . plays and assem- noisy street cars . . . basketball UlSE S blies . . . lunches and dances . . . games and snowy nights . . . teach- DOROTHY MALCOLM ADAMS ALBERT ers and tortures . . . Their object is to serve the senior class by promoting class' projects, and keeping West High on the very top. Whether it is a party or a prom, an assembly or a play, everything that comes up is handled with that distinct, crisp, and sparkling man- ner that belongs to the council of the class ot '46. QDXV O For a very obvious reason Bill Burbank is always easy to spot, whether it is on the gridiron, on the basketball court, on the baseball diamond-or in the halls of West High. Since he is so easy to spot, those in need of his abilities never have any trouble in finding him. Outstanding senior athletic scholar of the year, Bill was also an outstanding senior president, and a fellow to be remembered. CAMERA SHY GIRLS ' BOYS Angle, Nita Kiesler, Bill Bear, Mary A. The Council of the Class of '48 is no. different than any of the councils that have been elected by any other of the classes that have ever been an integral part of the makings of West High. The sophs have had competent leaders in the council and its officers, who have done their job in true West High tradition. They are warmed up now, and before they know it they will be traveling down the home stretch. Time flies at West Highg they will soon discover that things really pick up when you arrive at the home stretch.
