Hill and his Cowboys, for these two, whether they meet in the halls, the locker room, the athletic field or on the dance floor, are all pals forever. lt is not at all uncommon to find him on the athletic field kicking a football, or in the gym dancing. Mr. Hill has been constantly influencing the students toward an ideal which he has for the school. He feels that students should govern their school by themselves, that recreation should supplement work, and that a pupil should at all times be a good sport. ' Outside of school Mr. Hill is a man's man. He enjoys hunting and fishing. During the summer Mr, Hill has lost many a fish in the streams of Southwestern Colorado, but has compensated for this loss by bagging many rattlesnakes. i 1, HILDEGARD S. SWEET 1742.4 Difll2FG'lfJS . She has had much experience in the solving of their problems and through her wisdom and understanding has lightened the load in many a girl's heart. Not only is Mrs. Sweet helpful to the girls, but also to the boys, to whom she is a constant example of the gentleness and courtesy that they admire in women. She enjoys the work with the girls, and feels that West students are very friendly and cooperative. . Besides her fondness for people, Mrs. Sweet has a great liking for out-of-door life. She has traveled in many countries and is a person of real culture. HOWARD L. JOHNSON ASSISTANT PRiNciPAL AMILIAR to all Cowboys is the genial personality of Howard L. Before coming to West he coached football at South, and today he often officiates at many athletic events. He enjoys volleyball, golf, and badminton. anezffvzf Responding to the demands of war, the faculty of West has increased its effort to keep the school run- ning on its customary standard of efficiency. The coach is not only a builder of men-he also teaches the athletes many things. No matter what the task or how hard the feat may be, they are taught to continue until the finish and attempt to succeed. Along with this the individual is taught good sportsmanship, how to make decisions rapidly, to think clearly, and never give up, The coach is the person on whom the blame is put when the team is defeated, but to whom, when the team is victorious, due credit is not always given. He devotes his time and energy to building the char- acter of the boys as faithfully as to training a strong team and proves a real friend. For the fourth year in a row West took undisputed possession in the second bracket one-half game behind the prep championship WEST I3, SOUTH 2 A band of fighting cowboys upset the dope bucket by defeating a powerful South eleven in the opening game of the season. Ed Tadolini scampered 90 yards on an intercepted pass for the first score and a 60-yard pass to Jack Witherwax accounted for the other score. WEST 32, MANUAL I2 Every member of the West High squad of 34 men participated in an easy victory. WEST I3, NORTH 2 Playing in ankle deep mud West easily defeated the Vikings. WEST 7, EAST O Playing in mud for the second week in a row the Cowboys again upset the dope bucket. On a tricky reverse, Left Halfback Karamigios went over from the I2-yard line for the lone score. South Rebels. At the beginning of the season hopes of the Cowboys' finishing anywhere near the top were very low. As one of the sports experts put it, West is too light and green to give any of the other schools much competition. WEST O, SOUTH 7 In one of the best played games in the Denver prep history a powerful Rebel eleven eked out a 7 to O victory over an out- weighed bunch of never-say-die Cowboys. WEST 12, MANUAL O Facing a stubborn line, the Cowboys took to the air lanes, as Don Teske, diminutive halfback, threw the pigskin all over the field to defeat the Thunderbolts I2 to O. WEST I9, NORTH O West again easily defeated the victory-starved Vikings. On the third play of the game Karamigios, behind beautiful blocking, galloped 56 yards to pay dirt. In the closing moments of the second quarter Harold Kantrowitz scooted 72 yards to score. WEST 7, EAST 7 An over-confident West eleven lost out on their championship hopes when the ever-dangerous East Angels held the Cowpokes to a 7 to 7 ti, thereby putting the Cowboys one-half game behind the South Rebels, who took undisputed possession of first place. Ed Tadolini, small but mighty center, Jack Witherwax, endp Jim Iaylor, tackle, and John Greeley Karamigios, left halfback, were first team choices on the local papers' All-City selections. They finished in last place but they were on top when it came to fight. The scores were as follows: South 6, West 0, Man- ual 5, West 1, North 6, West O, East, 6, West 0. Arnold Lerner was elected captain. Just after the season opened, Richard Hotton replaced Elbert Chap- man as coach. 1 defeated Pueblo Centennial 128-221 and Fort Collins l4O-291 to set up the crucial tilt between West and East for the state crown. Before an overflowing crowd the two teams played a nip and tuck game which went into a third overtime before East come out on top, 32 to 30, in one of the most thrilling and best played games ever held in the Denver Municipal Auditorium. Every member of the West Hiqh first team was placed on either the first or second All-State honor teams. BILL MARKHAM, LEROY MOSS, BOB SCHWINDT SENIOR GOLF LETTERMEN This year's golf team, as in the past years, gave a good account of themselves in league competition. Throughout the season the Cowbovs were on the too of the heap until the last drastic match, in which thev lost to East, thus putting West ino second place behind East linksmen and South, who captured first place honors. At the beginning of the season Coach Ritchie I-lotton, who turned in a creditable job of coaching in his first golf assignment, was greeted by three Iettermen-Leroy Moss, Marv Armstrong, and par-shooting Bob Schwindt. In their four matches the links- men tied South, beat North and Manual, and lost to East. Mem- hers of the squad who lettered are Lerov Moss, Dick Aullinson, Bob Schwinrlt, Marv Armstrong, Bill Markham, Wayne Moss, Don Morris, and Dick Jones. The last three mentioned are sophomores and have two years of competition left. Marv Armstrong was hon- ored in being elected captain by his teammates. WRESTLING West High was very proud of its wrestling team this year when they brought to the school the first championship of any kind since l935. Not only did they take the city title but they went on ahead to win the state championship. They met many of the schools in the state in both practice and regular matches. They did not lose one of these matches. Bo Place succeeded Elbert Chapman as coach of the team. He showed the team many of the tricks he used to use and did what any coach would give anything to do, that is, winning both city and state championships the first year at the school. Max Lucero was chosen captain. Those who made all-state were Milton Vasquez, Kenneth Milliken and Dave Owens. SENIOR WRESTLING LETTERMEN Max Lucero, Ed Sneary, Louie Verdeal, Ross Spencer, Dave Owens, Milton Vasquez, Eli Barr B ll :sl ' I Il. lf BASEBALL-1942 I ln a season predominated by hitter's glory and pitcher's agony, the ellar-swelling Cowboys placed John Karamigios in the shortstop slot and loycl Converse in a utility position. These two boys were all-city baseoa.l la ers. Y Because the hitting was the dominating factor in the league, the close ecisions for all-city positions were determined by the stickwork of the la er. Y Leonard Karden and Arnold Deitsch were two Westerners who 'received erths on the second team. Had the Cowboys finished a little higher in e standings, Arnold Deitsrh, who is lust a sophomore, would have been a ertain selection on the mythical team. Karamigios closed his high-school baseball career in a blaze ot glory. FINAL STANDINGS ' TEAM WON LOST PCT. A new king has been crowned, as East was dethroned, having to give up a title they have held for seventeen consecutive years. South, the new king, went all the way to the championship un- defeated. The Rebels made a fine showing against competitive prepsters. West, who did better this year than they have done in several seasons, gave everything they had to offer, but to no avail, as they ended the season in last place, after one single victory over Manual's Bricklayers. Letters were awarded to Gil Montoya, unanimously elected cap- tain, and second place in All-City, to Ray DeAragon, Wilbur Stut- heit, Bob Schultz, Maurice Drake, Clarence Drake, Jack Bailey and Ward Sneesby. SENIOR SWIMMING LETTERMEN Ward Sneesby, Ray DeAragon 1 '-tg TRACK-I 942 After three years of hard work, Coach Harvey Riddle had track prospects which brought a smile of happiness to his face. The squad was especially strong in the sprints and relays, but the field events were the main stumbling block. Dave Thomas and John Kirk were pointing for top honors in all the sprints. lmrovich, Morris, Patterson, and Barfoot were some of the other leading dash men. Cummings, Mihoover, Gorden, Sneary, and Allum were the best of the distance men, while Losh and Sterkel were topnotch timber toppers. Phillipus and Shpall will be returning weight men. I West's track team finished fourth in the final standings. Row Three: Bob Berger, Bob Cummings, Jerry Shoall, Albert Allum, Paul Nichols, Godfrey Mihoover, Kenneth Losh.
