MAN 0F THE YEAR DON F. AllEN When Don Allen accepted a position at West High, he stepped not only into a teaching profession but into the hearts of every Western- er. Good-looking, collegiate, Mr. Allen is nearly as young as many of his students. But greater than his work of teaching Art and Clay Modeling, is the man him- selfg a keen judge of human nature, he displays a sym- pathetic understanding in every matter. t Foresight and tolerance have prepared Mr. Allen to mold not only clay figures, but youthful destinies that have been placed in his skillful hands. The class of '4O's life at West is endedg Don Allen's is just beginning. In future years, many other students will receive the same helpful attention that seniors of to- day appreciate so greatly. It is with great admiration and affection that this West- ward Ho is dedicated to Don Allen - teacher and friend.

Seniors march from the page of Wesfs life to a waiting world, def scending from the peak of high school success to bc' gin the climb anew. All references to Lile Magazine in this Annual are purely intentional and are authorized by Life's Editors, decidedly living and friendly to West High School. None ot our ma- terial is actually reprinted trom Life Magazine. C LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Recorded in the Westward Ho of 1940 are four years of study, work, laughter, heartaches, thrills, and gay rollicking play-four years of joyous, fast' moving school life. In every picture, writefup, and section of the Annual may be found the underlying theme-our life at West. The day we stepped into these halls as freshmen or sophomores was our class's beginning, and the graduation exercises of 1940, its end. Diihcult was the problem of placing every event, study, memory, into a history of one hundred and twelve pages. To accomplish this was our task, our duty to the class of '4O. If we have succeeded, it was our loyalty and hope that carried us over the hard spots. The impartial reader will find this book merely an Annual, good in many spots, weak in othersg but if this Westward Ho recalls trueftoflife memories to all Cowboys who have attended West at any time, it has served its purpose, and we are wellfrewarded.
