C-Ewa fy True friends in need and spirit are the seventyfnine genial pedagogues comprising the West High Faculty. From September to June, teachers alternately become funfloving pals, helpful advisers, and stern taskmasters to the two thousand students daily passing in review before them. Already outstanding in personnel and efficiency, faculty members have the added distinction of being titled, by visiting educators, one of the best' informed teachers' groups in the United States. An annual affair, the senior picnic is arranged and financed by faculty members. All seniors are treated to an afternoon of gaiety, topped by an informal meal served in the lunchroom. Teachers participate in novel enter' tainments for graduating classmen. Not uncommon to Westerners is the sight of students and teachers gathered around a conference table working in close harmony through the new spirit of teacherfstudent cooperation.

HOWARD L. JOHNSON Assistant Principal Not unfamiliar to West students was personable Howard L. Johnson when he assumed duties here as Assistant Principal in September, 1939. Previously head football coach at South, he proved a popular leader in both athletics and school life. Attending Hamline University in St. Paul, John' son later received his degree from the University of Nebraska. Prior to coming to West, he assisted in the Health Education Department of the Denver Public Schools. To those who know his traits of dependability, optimism and initiative, there is no surprise in the fact that he is ably filling his present position at West. It is easy to understand that tall, stalwart Johnsoifs hobby is athletics. Miva fe olives HILDEGARD S. SWEET Dean of Girls Quiet and unassuming, West's Dean of Girls, Hildegard S. Sweet, is one of the school's busiest members. Born in the western region of Canada, she spent most of her childhood there, later receiving a Master's Degree from Columbia University. Her teaching began in Toledo schools. An instructor of German before the war, she taught physiology until the family moved westward. In 1912, Mrs. Sweet had the pleasure of a trip to Europe. Coupled with a keen interest in educational work, West's Dean of Girls has developed exceptional qualif ties of sympathy and insight which enable her to be a guiding light in the lives of many girls. The strength and simplicity of a wellfordcrcd life are exemplified in her office.
