Seniors march from the page of Wesfs life to a waiting world, def scending from the peak of high school success to bc' gin the climb anew. All references to Lile Magazine in this Annual are purely intentional and are authorized by Life's Editors, decidedly living and friendly to West High School. None ot our ma- terial is actually reprinted trom Life Magazine. C LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Recorded in the Westward Ho of 1940 are four years of study, work, laughter, heartaches, thrills, and gay rollicking play-four years of joyous, fast' moving school life. In every picture, writefup, and section of the Annual may be found the underlying theme-our life at West. The day we stepped into these halls as freshmen or sophomores was our class's beginning, and the graduation exercises of 1940, its end. Diihcult was the problem of placing every event, study, memory, into a history of one hundred and twelve pages. To accomplish this was our task, our duty to the class of '4O. If we have succeeded, it was our loyalty and hope that carried us over the hard spots. The impartial reader will find this book merely an Annual, good in many spots, weak in othersg but if this Westward Ho recalls trueftoflife memories to all Cowboys who have attended West at any time, it has served its purpose, and we are wellfrewarded. Editor 3 1 E I 3 I I I ,. .nj MAN 0F THE YEAR DON F. AllEN When Don Allen accepted a position at West High, he stepped not only into a teaching profession but into the hearts of every Western- er. Good-looking, collegiate, Mr. Allen is nearly as young as many of his students. But greater than his work of teaching Art and Clay Modeling, is the man him- selfg a keen judge of human nature, he displays a sym- pathetic understanding in every matter. t Foresight and tolerance have prepared Mr. Allen to mold not only clay figures, but youthful destinies that have been placed in his skillful hands. The class of '4O's life at West is endedg Don Allen's is just beginning. In future years, many other students will receive the same helpful attention that seniors of to- day appreciate so greatly. It is with great admiration and affection that this West- ward Ho is dedicated to Don Allen - teacher and friend. ' ' '-,.,-3 -U gi , . -jj 25 94 , Y M YY' - C-Ewa fy True friends in need and spirit are the seventyfnine genial pedagogues comprising the West High Faculty. From September to June, teachers alternately become funfloving pals, helpful advisers, and stern taskmasters to the two thousand students daily passing in review before them. Already outstanding in personnel and efficiency, faculty members have the added distinction of being titled, by visiting educators, one of the best' informed teachers' groups in the United States. An annual affair, the senior picnic is arranged and financed by faculty members. All seniors are treated to an afternoon of gaiety, topped by an informal meal served in the lunchroom. Teachers participate in novel enter' tainments for graduating classmen. Not uncommon to Westerners is the sight of students and teachers gathered around a conference table working in close harmony through the new spirit of teacherfstudent cooperation. Nt , in .- Q ' AL'-' A . HOWARD L. JOHNSON Assistant Principal Not unfamiliar to West students was personable Howard L. Johnson when he assumed duties here as Assistant Principal in September, 1939. Previously head football coach at South, he proved a popular leader in both athletics and school life. Attending Hamline University in St. Paul, John' son later received his degree from the University of Nebraska. Prior to coming to West, he assisted in the Health Education Department of the Denver Public Schools. To those who know his traits of dependability, optimism and initiative, there is no surprise in the fact that he is ably filling his present position at West. It is easy to understand that tall, stalwart Johnsoifs hobby is athletics. Miva fe olives HILDEGARD S. SWEET Dean of Girls Quiet and unassuming, West's Dean of Girls, Hildegard S. Sweet, is one of the school's busiest members. Born in the western region of Canada, she spent most of her childhood there, later receiving a Master's Degree from Columbia University. Her teaching began in Toledo schools. An instructor of German before the war, she taught physiology until the family moved westward. In 1912, Mrs. Sweet had the pleasure of a trip to Europe. Coupled with a keen interest in educational work, West's Dean of Girls has developed exceptional qualif ties of sympathy and insight which enable her to be a guiding light in the lives of many girls. The strength and simplicity of a wellfordcrcd life are exemplified in her office. CIENCE ,g,.o'5i,AK il , . ,A Q F K A .. 1 eff A 1 ig W Q - ' um Q e Q , fig? Scholastic success was reached by some, partly attained by others. Leaders were quick' ly singled out by vote and popular acclaim. But whether or not fame came to every mem' ber of the class of '40, some measure of the true friendliness and genuine democracy of the Cowboy school was instilled in each one. With the new life at West, changes were many and varied for 40'ers: noon dancing, longer lunch hours, greater schoolroom freedom came to West. These entailed increased responsibility but provided farfreaching opportunity to students abiding by its demands. The road to success is a rocky one. No exception is the path to high school democf racy, which is alternately paved with praise and criticism. Through -its entire journey, '40 did its share to make West a finer school. Having reached this destination, the class looks back with few regrets and much satisfaction at its lasting achievements. l0E.....,,,.f, rf --ww.,--vf-W-v-1-sf.-uw-'W f. Strong were the squads that entered in league competition, but powerful too were their opponentsg so no championships graced the Puncher parade at the time of the Annual's printing. However, second places in football, golf, and tennisg and third places in basketball and wrestling were the enviable records placed in the scorers' books. Resignation in the Cowboys' coaching staff caused a general shifting of the department. Earl Paul, baseball manager, accepted a position at Horace Mann Junior Highg Tub Morris quit football duties and replaced Paul as baseball coachg Elbert Chapman relinquished track responsibilities in favor of sophomore baseball. Frank Mielenz and Harvey Riddle were appointed to fill the vacancies. WO0DY WOODY HARV RIDDLE DUTCH RINNE FOOTBALL West, 34 - North, 7 Undismayed by three disasterous seasons, Orange and Black Footballers unveiled the 1939 edition of their grid machine with an impressive 34-7 thumping of North. Elmer Moore's two touchdowns paced the Punchers' victory. West, 0 - East, 18 Blazing a championship trail of power and speed, East's white shirted warriors trampled West's less powerful Cowboys into the sands of defeat 18-O. Game though tired, the Orange and Black struggled resolutely against the inevitable verdict until the final gun stilled even faint hopes of victory. West, 0 - South, 20 It was a dismal day for West rooters, as in their third start the Cowpokes were overpowered by a strong South eleven, 20-0. Havens' 46-yard ramble into pay dirt in the last minute of the first half was the straw that broke the Cowboys' defensive back and turned a potential battle into a Rebel victory march. West, 25 - Manual, 0 Their ardor undampened by a steady drizzle, Orange and Black footballers hit the victory trail against Manual's Brick- layers-slipping, sliding, and splashing to a 25-0 triumph. From the opening gun, it was a West field day as the Cow- boys punched over score after score with machine-like pre- cision. When the points were tallied, West's bunting rode triumphantly in the wind-driven rain as the Cowboys con- tinued their winning streak. il SQUAD 1 Front Row: Back Row: Bauman Maes Boutwell Oshier ' Nichols Beeson 3 Feld Brady Smith A. Every Puncher functioned as a smooth cog in a mighty machine. - 1 West, 6 -- East, 31 l With summerlike weather holding full sway, East's V Cherubs smashed a 31-6 win over a valiant band of West 4 Cowboys. The score told only half the story, as the Morris- 1 men out-fought and out-scrapped the favored Angels only to fall before a belated second-half rush. Fairchild and Petersen combined forces to form an unbeatable duo. l West, 27 - South, 20 A will to win for their silver-haired mentor, furnished, a win-bound Orange and Black band with a thrilling 27-20 victory over South's bewildered Rebels. Because of a touch- ing half-time tribute to retiring Newton C. Tub Morris, who for a quarter century has guided West's football destinies, enthusiasm welded the Cowboys into an unbeatable power- house, determined to repay in a small way the helpful training 1 Tub had given them. Overcoming a 14-O deficit early in the third period, Baker, Snyder, Little, and Morgan tore off repeated gains, crashing over four touchdowns and three extra points in a spectacular rally. West, 7 -- North, 0 Meeting a much improved North team, after the peak of the South football contest, a determined and game Cowboy eleven eked out a 7-O decision over a battered Viking squad that never once was allowed to advance into Western terri- tory. It was Bill Snyder who provided the winning margin, as he plunged off guard from the two-yard line with less than a minute to play. It was West's fifth win against three losses, and the Punchers Hnished second in the league. nd 5 wi - , .Nu , My K 4 3 Ni ,if V .,,1C, .3 -. N' xr' ,u1,,A. , Y fziaf S. my ,,,. The Punchers were potent in their encounters, though unable to hit baskets when the chips were down. Heartbreakingly close were four of the defeats suffered by the Westerners, as they were beaten three times by not more than five points, twice by only two. In the season opener, the plucky Cowboys fell before a North onslaught 32f27g then East's championship Angels nosed out the West' erners 33f29. In the third contest, South took full measure in winning from a thoroughly tired, dis' couraged West quintet 3443. s Suddenly finding their needed power, the cagers arose to hit the comeback path against Manual 35' 25, and the No1th's Viks 2847. Then as West root' ers began to pray fervently for a victory, an inf spired Cowboy team fought East's favorites to a standstill, only to lose 35453 on an overtime basket that came after Babe Lind coolly dropped in two free throws to tie the score in the regular game 3363, with less than five seconds to play. 'Defeated but never quitting, the Punchers faced South the next Friday, and once again hard luck ruled as the Rebels edged through with a twofpoint victory, 31f29. Losses seemed merely to spur the Westerners on as they knocked a favored Manual squad from a possible state tourney place, 41f28. It was West all the way until Lind, the spark of the team, incurred an injury during the third quarter and was com' pelled to leave the game. A subsequent ray of hope was the fact that N. C. Tub Morris would return from retirement to again begin baseball duties. It was a strong nine that Coach Paul led to within one game of North's champion Vikings. After lacing the Norsemen twice, the Punchers, proving unable to fathom South, were knocked from a championship tie with North by the Rebs. Nominations for allfcity included Dick Maes, Don Girtin, Bill Moriarity, and Sid Milzer. Six points in the Greeley meet climaxed the season as Morgan, Little, and Moore finished high in statefvvide competition. TRACK Under new leadership, West tracksters again hit the cinders, striving for victories and new records. Harvey Riddle replaced veteran Drag Chapman, track mentor for eight seasons, and started at once to whip thinfclad hopefuls into a seasoned squad. with better prospects than any since the banner team of 1935, Orange and Black runners did their share to boost West's none' toofimposing track record, which lists but a single championship. TENNIS Rackets flashing, tennis balls hopping unpredictably, West's 1939 tennis squad battled against the other high school teams. When the dust of court conflict cleared away, the Cowboys were firm- ly entrenched in the league's second position. Unparalleled in twentyfthree years of West tennis history, were the sixteen victories and eight defeats registered by the netters. It was the first Cowboy club rising to second place during that time. Always active, cadets compete in drill and inspection yearly against other high school units, both as a group and in individual maneuvers. Also important, the rifle team was winner of the Hearst Trophy in national competition in 1939. The result of these matches is highlyftrained sharpshooters familiar with the corps' traditions. The practical purpose of the unit is to equip young men to be reserve officers in the armyg the deeper motive is to -teach youth to be selffreliant. Actual military work is classroom instruction, shooting drills, and two weeks of summer camp with the regular army. Social activities include an annual cityfwide ball for R, O. T. S. dance which this year soared to new heights as colorful decorative schemes car' ried out the theme of a Sweetheart Dance. Soft lights, flickering shadows, gay laughter, and unique settings wove a perfect pattern against the melodious background of Stan Koskoff's rhythms. Chosen as Sweetheart of the dance was Virginia Carlisle, with attendants Sylvia Houghton, Lois Myers, Virginia Nikkel, Mickey Jo Lewis, Doris Potratz, and Opal Lewis. The success of the dance was due to the tireless efforts of Eleanor Lewis, President of the S. O. S. Club.
