HILL For his unbounded energy and practical ideas, We, the Class of 1938, dedicate this Annual. ln him We have again a principal who personifies the demo- cratic spirit of education, Wherein the individual is most important. His ability to make friends with both pupils and teachers has endeared him to us. 'We hope that West will continue to be the lucky recipi- ' ent of his able leadership. Nine Storewvrd This year's WESTWARD l-IO attempts to catch and hold the drama of nine months of work and play, success and defeat. l-lere your Scenario Department has tried to place, in permanent graphic form, the action, the color, the gla- mour, and the high comedy produced by two thousand lives brought together daily in a spirit of hope and enthusiasm. You will find in these pages the records of our successful productions and our box-office flops. In them you will meet the directors and the cast, the stars and the poor little stand- ins, and the fans. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is here, and the somewhat lesser but still important Actors' Guild. We have kept the records of the stunt men. The .Associated Enterprises all Cwe hopel are shown. The publicity men, the cameramen, the Executive Board, and even our own Board of Censorship are present. We bring you once more our hard.-working Casting Directors fwho not only cast, but sometimes cast outl. We give you the four out- standing performers of the year, and the six highest-paid stars. For every department of a big producing studio has in West High its counterpart. And now, our new Producer has made his bow. The scene is set, everybody is in his place, and the show is on. His ready and inexhaustible Wit, his broad-minded solutions ot problems, and his eagerness to know and help have made him a general favorite. Throughout his progressive ideas one thought is paramount, obviously expressed in every- thing he does . . . One learns by living and lives what is being learned. The social arbiter of West, Mrs. Hildegard S. Sweet is appreciated equally for her gracious poise, her keen insight into human and educational problems, and her deep understanding of troubled and maladiusted students. W anda Wilson Secretary ..............,............,....,.,, Kenneth Hobbs Maurice's executive ability already war- ranted him a high position in school affairs. His clever and humorous speech won him Maurice Smock Wanda Wilson Kenneth Hobbs Twenty-two great applause. As Senior President he was a conscientious and interesting leader. Wanda Wilson was the feminine view- point of the officers. She assisted a great deal in the plans for the Stars' Party, and her personality is always a welcome addition to any group. She had already held a number of positions in various clubs. Kenneth Hobbs, a letterman and popular young man, was our Secretary. A member of Spur and an outstanding student, he was a popular choice. ' Second Semester President .......................................i Iames Keisler A r Vice-President ..,... ....... .l....... H a rold Haddon Secretary ......,......,,...............,..... Barbara Weiss Iames Kiesler, already active in other school organizations, was elected President. As Editor of the Rodeo, he showed signs of , ability. He helped a great deal with the plans for Graduation Exercises. Harold Haddon, a brilliant student and let- terman, was our Vice-President. Ordinarily a retiring and modest fellow, Harold showed real leadership on occasion, and served as an able second to lames. Barbara Weiss, our Secretary, was promi- nent also in many other associated enter- prises. The only girl among the officers, she fs nevertheless ably represented the feminine viewpoint, and was a participant in many policy-forming discussions, besides serving in her capacity as Secretary. Four years ago the first members of the 1938 company of stars timidly into Studio W. As stand-ins for a year, they had a chance to learn rules of the game, and develop the characteristics of good troupers. The next year they helped boost a championship football team on to vic- tory, and helped install and pay for the big public address system of Studio W, as members of the cast. Last year they had become featured players, and were responsible for many of Studio W's most conspicuous successes. As the year drew to a close, they joined in grateful farewell ceremonies with which Studio W bade farewell to its honored Vice-President in charge of production, Mr. Harry V. Kepner. And with a new year came a new Vice-President to Studio W. With the seasoned stars of '38 in the lead, spirit has reached a new high, and innova- tions too numerous to mention have been started. The students chosen tor the council must have had satisfactory scholarship and citizenship. They are elected by their third hour classes. The council gives an assembly each semester, sponsors an all-school dance on Orange and Black day, publishes the W Book, and co-operates with other organizations or the school administra- tion in any move toward a better school. EXECUTIVE BOARD iStudent Interest Committeel The Student Interest Committee, West's Executive Board, is composed of , the officers ot the four classes. lt has l also representatives from the Annual Board, Bodeo, National Honor Society, and its officers are the officers of the student council. lts purposes are the direction of the student council and the arousing ot enthusiasm and school spirit. lts members also compose the Student Court, the Board of Censorship for Studio W, which has certain powers in cases ot discipline. iSafety Councill These are not the nine members of the Supreme Court, but merely the students ot the West High Safety Council. Planning satety programs and organizations, recording accidents, obtaining tratiic signs for the dangerous intersections in the school's vicinity-these are some of the jobs of these nine very important cowhands. Sixty-six OUTSTANDING PERFORMEBS CHead Boys and Head Girlsl Because of their willingness to co- operate with their follow-workers, and their unbounded loyalty to all that per- tains to Studio W, we point with pride to the four outstanding performers of 1937-1938. Betty Yockey Back in the days when Betty had merely supporting roles, her charming, vivacious personality made friends of all her associates in Studio W. To those who watched her career as she rose to stardom, it was not surprising that she was chosen as the outstanding performer for the first half of the year. Fred Doppelmayr There was nothing startling in the launching of Fred's career in Studio W, yet, while but a stand-in, his ability was recognized, and he was given roles af- fording opportunity to develop his talents. His indomitable spirit won him many laurels, culminating in his being named the outstanding performer for the first half, among the boys. Wanda Wilson Wanda Wilson has been one of our most active and able outstanding per- formers. Gifted with exceptional tact and charm, she has stepped into a place of real leadership in the school. Her wide range of interests and connections has kept her in vital touch with the whole picture of life at Studio W, and she has been ever ready and able to contribute to our progress. Maurice Smock Wanda Wilsoii Fred Doppelmayr Betty Yockey Maurice Smock Maurice Smock, in his position as an outstanding performer of 1938, proved himself to be a real trouper. Maurice, in spite of his many honors and the notice and comment they drew to him, has remained as always modest, sincere, dependable. Everyone in Studio W is proud of Maurice, of the things he is as well as of the things he does. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Truly democratic, Studio W is governed mainly by the members of the cast. They rest their legislative functions with the Players Union which in turn entrusts the power to define rules and privileges for the players as a whole in the Executive Board. The judicial responsibiility is assumed by the Board of Censorship. Government of the players, by the players, for the players, a tradition at Studio W, is being carried on faithfully by Vice President in charge of production Hill, who has successfully carried out the same plan at Studio M.
