Sports Editor ' s Note: Putting together an entire Sports section was not one of the easiest jobs I ever did. and wasn ' t a job for which I can claim full credit. 1 couldn ' t begin to name the dozens of people who helped me, for if it had not been for their assistance, this section, in short, would have been a total flop. The coaches, teachers and administrators should be commended for their advice, but the real thanks should go to the athletes who went out of their way to identify pictures, research infor- mation, and double-check statistics to make what I feel is the best Sports section the Chieftain has ever had. Scott Antaya and Martin Stowe have been told continually how much I appreciate all the work (and long hours) they went through in order to give me such a fine selection of prints to choose from. Once again, thanks so very much to all of you who contributed to this section-you know who you are. Bob Staake Sports Editor Gymnastics 89

Gymnasts Perform Beautifully The 1974-75 Gymnastic team has come a long way from it ' s 1970-71 shakey beginning. The team has become more poised, flexible and confident in competition. Everyone has come up to more advanced stunts in their routines. The team participates in the following events; Tumbling, Balance-beam, Vaulting, Uneven parallel bars and floor exercise. The balance beam is probably the most difficult of the five events because the girls only have 4 inches of wood in which to work with. Tumbling has a great deal to do with floor exercise. Along with tumbling, there are dance moves to be done on time to the acompaniment of music. The spring board is laid before the house to give the gymnists enough spring in which to execute the vault. The uneven parallel bars require total concentration and control over the body in order to make the movements smooth. Each and every event needs lots of strength and control in order to perform the moves properly. The Bay League consists of the following high schools; North, South, Rolling Hills, Torrance, Palos Verdes and West. Sue Goldsmith (Below), displays her excellent form on the balance beam. Sellinger feels that this particular event requires the most concentration and skill. Sharon Moorefield (Right), works out her routine on the four inch wide balance beam.
