Varsity Batmen: Pride, Determination and Drive. Pitching seemed to be the key to the Warrior success this year. Heading the staff, which had an E.R.A. of under two runs a game, was Andy Center. Mike Lynes contributed with a no-hitter against Serra. West had an outstanding relief pitcher in John Ashton. The Warriors were led in hit- ting by Larry Jones, who batted close to 350. Bill Brewer led the South Bay in stolen bases this year. West began the season slowly, and enjoyed success in both the Palos Verdes and Hawthorne Tourna- ments and continued their winning ways through the league. West ' s strength came later in the sea- son from strong defense, led by shortstop George Bigfoot Stablien and catcher Glenn Peterson. Key wins this year included Torrance, Palos Verdes, Hawthorne and South. Hussle became the big word on the Varsity squad this year with Jack Wixom, Mark Vasi and Larry Jones leading the way.
