Cagers: Best Ever at West Before the season began. Varsity basketball coach Tom Sutherland called this year ' s squad the best team West High has ever had. By season ' s end, the Warriors had done little to disprove that statement. The 1974-75 edition at school records the most wins in a season (21) and most consecutive wins (7). They finished in the C.I.F. 3A Top Ten ' and were Ocean League Co-Champs, tying Beverly Hills. West began the season with a lineup of Bob Vo- gelsang and Lenny Ingalls at guards, George Sta- blien and Dave Neas at forwards and Billy Neu at the center position. Dave Crespin started in a num- ber of games at forward toward the middle of the season, and Dave Ward (Junior was brought up from the Junior Varsity just before the Warriors began League competition playing the center posi- tion, moving Neu to forward. These seven saw most of the action with Norm Tappin getting an oppor- tunity near the campaign ' s end. Neu and Vogelsang made ALL-Ocean League first team, while Stablien was named to the second team. Neu was also selected as All-Tournament in all three tourneys (West entered Pacific Shores Hawthorne and the Torrance Christmas Classic). Forward Dave Crespin (Right) fights to get the ball into the hoop as the Warriors blaze past the Redondo Seahawks 66-58. In this 2nd round playoff game against Los Altos, George Stablien pops this shot in and the Warriors were soon to go into overtime. West Isot this heartbreaker 54-53. Team members selected Neu MVP, Stablien Team captain and Ingalls as Most Improved. The bench was held down by Frank Scapa, Floyd Hor- ton, Frank Fletcher, Bill Hinchberger and Jim Reece, until he quit at mid-season. Fletcher and Hinch- berger were noted as ' Presidents of the Pine ' for their unique bench-sitting style. 62 Varsity Basketball

Warrior MVP Billy Neu (Left) powers the ball into the bucket as the Warriors glide past Redondo 61-42. Neu had a total of 19 points the Warrior high for this game. Coach Tom Sutherland displays his approval of a Warrior basket in the playoff game against Los Altos Conquerors. A key to the Warrior success was the excellent depth that it possessed. Rotting on the bench are (Left to Right) Bill Hinchberger and Frank Fletcher ( Presidents of the Pine ), Floyd Horton, Norm Tap- pin, Dave Ward, Frank Scapa and Dave Snake Neas. Ri Basketball .J
