Mark Vasi (Above,) gives the call to Ron Schloderer (22), on this play. His effort gains 9 yards giving West an important first down. Homecoming was against the Vikings of Santa Monica and West ' s defense was again the dominating factor. Outstanding pressure by the front four kept Samo from going to the air, and made them use their inferior ground game. Total team effort made this win possible as the Warriors dealt past the Vikes21-7. The Warriors traveled to the ' school by the sea ' to clash helmets with PV ' sSea Kings (see pages 46,47 and 48). Probably the most ex- citing game in most fans opinion. West rallied to come home victorious. 10-7 was the final from Palos Verdes. West ' s third loss of the season came when they hosted Rolling Hills. The Warriors fought to comeback but the clock turned out to be their worst enemy. The Titans shaded past the Warriors 18-14. What a game! What an upset! The Saxons of North came into this game undefeated and in first place, but the more prepared Warriors shocked North 17-14. The game was a big boost to the warrior moral, and the outcome surprised the average student. South was the final game of the regular season, and from the very first play West showed they wanted to finish their season ap- propiately. On the first play from scrimmage, QB IVlaric Vasi threw to Cory Hons in the flat and there was no stopping the 5 9 split end, who went all the way for the first 6 West points. West won 28-0. Well it ' s history now ... No doubt it was one of the most entertaining seasons for the fan. Around school it seemed as if everyone was talking about Friday ' s game, and with a little bit of luck, it ' ll be that way again next season. Varsity Football 49

Six foot, 214 pound guard Brian Stranger (Above), ap- pears as an imposing threat as lie runs interference for fullback Glen Peterson (35) against Centennial. The Warriors powered by the Apaches 2 1-6. The first home game of the season was against Monrovia ' s Wildcats. The score was in the books as 17-22, which only denoted a Monrovia victory, but the score did not tell of the Warrior persistance and dedication that made it a classic see-saw battle. Senior Steve Zak, who was injured during the game, (See page 47), ended his colorful high school football career. Centennial only proved to be victims for experimentation (See page 48), as the strong Warriors pounded by the Apaches 21-6. West had a chance to use new offenses and experi- mental plays to polish them up before their bout with the Hawthorne Cougars. The Hawthorne game turned out to be a big offensive dissappointment. Warrior de- fense kept the game from becoming a total joke as West could never fully capitalize on Hawthorne mistakes. Both special teams scored the only West points, a kickoff return and a punt return. West was thwarted 13-20. Again, against PV, Glen Peterson (Above), makes an all out lunge to cross the goaline, but his hopes are erased by two PV linemen. But on the proceeding play, quarterback Mark Vasi (Below), is more successful. His keeper is the icing on the cake, and the War- riors emerge as victors in this contest. Varsity Football 48

Sophomore, Freshman Warriors Show They Have Talent. Produce Season of Excitement. The Warriors finished third in the league with a 4-3 record. Plagued with injuries, the team fought back with a well-balanced offensive attack. Halfback Bob Hudspeth led the team in the rushing department, passing was the best ever produced on a sophomore level. Dave Weatherman, a very poised and capable quarterback threw at will to four exceptionally good receivers: Mike Franks, Dale Hyashite, John Duncan, and Fred Mitchell. The line, probably one of the biggest ever, was led by Easy Ed Penningtion, Mark Holden, Mike Leonard, Jerry Stablein, and Jack Cambell. Although the Warriors finished third in the Bay League they were constantly in the running for first place. Special thanks should go to Rick Petersen, and Ron Marra for donating there time to aid the coaching staff of John Black and Kurt Davis. Our Frosh football team enjoyed a superb season in which they amassed six wins to go along with just one loss and one tie. While opening up the schedule with a tie against Bishop Montgomery and a loss to Monrovia the team began to yell and soon became a well coordinated unit. The strong competitive desire was clearly evident as our Warriors won their remaining six games highlighted by a 3-0 win over North and the Bay League Championship. The intire Defensive Unit, led by Darryl Rippstein, Ed Torres, Jon Turner and Rick Tiberio, placed unrelenting pres- sure on each opponent. So effective was this group that only three foes were able to score. Offensively the Frosh capitalized on their strong front line and the scoring punch of Tim Roquemore, Kevin McMillan, Dennis Brown, Henry Herron and, of course. Ken Walter Jr. It was Walter ' s strong leg that provided West with wins over North and South, 3-0 and 9-7, respectively. Along with his stellar per- formance as offensive guard and linebacker Walter was chosen Most Valuable Player. Freshman quarterback Ron Zinns (Below), gives the call to Henry Herron on this play against Verbum Dei. The powerful Warriors blitzed past their opponent 27-0. Sophomore Quarterback Dave Weatherman (Above), seems to have a large choice of options on this play. The sophomores had a stormy season, but finished with a 4-3 league record. 50 Sophomore and Freshman Football
