1 - ' i The Warriors suffered a costly loss when receiver Steve Zak (Above) was sidelined with bruised ribs acquired during the Monrovia game. Here he is seen following fullback Glen Peterson (35), and outstanding blocking by the line. Junior defensive back Mike Roquemore (Below) dives in desperation to pick off a P.V. pass. This is only one of many outstanding efforts by the Warrior sec- ondary. Consistency and Motivation Proved to Be the Prevailing Factors in the Warriors Success It was another season of action, thrills and suspense as the Warrior Varsity battled to be on top of the Bay League. The gridders got on the winning track when they traveled to Long Beach Wilson. Defense was the name of the game, and when the offense took the field, they were chiefly a running attack. Defensive back Mike Roquemore played an outstanding game as he led the team in tackles, intercepted a pass and scored the first touchdown of the season. West defeated the Bruins 22-10. Six foot, 214 pound guard Brian Stranger (Above), ap- pears as an imposing threat as lie runs interference for fullback Glen Peterson (35) against Centennial. The Warriors powered by the Apaches 2 1-6. The first home game of the season was against Monrovia ' s Wildcats. The score was in the books as 17-22, which only denoted a Monrovia victory, but the score did not tell of the Warrior persistance and dedication that made it a classic see-saw battle. Senior Steve Zak, who was injured during the game, (See page 47), ended his colorful high school football career. Centennial only proved to be victims for experimentation (See page 48), as the strong Warriors pounded by the Apaches 21-6. West had a chance to use new offenses and experi- mental plays to polish them up before their bout with the Hawthorne Cougars. The Hawthorne game turned out to be a big offensive dissappointment. Warrior de- fense kept the game from becoming a total joke as West could never fully capitalize on Hawthorne mistakes. Both special teams scored the only West points, a kickoff return and a punt return. West was thwarted 13-20. Again, against PV, Glen Peterson (Above), makes an all out lunge to cross the goaline, but his hopes are erased by two PV linemen. But on the proceeding play, quarterback Mark Vasi (Below), is more successful. His keeper is the icing on the cake, and the War- riors emerge as victors in this contest. Varsity Football 48
