Deserving Attention . and Freecloud Jean Costeau Jean Michele Cousteau, underwater architect, diver, and one of the world ' s leading ocean conservationists asked to come to West High to inform the stu- dents of the need to save the oceans. Conserving the sea was his topic pre- sented to some 650 West High student; at a special assembly, March 17, periods 2 and 3. With him, Cousteau brought over 200 color slides of an extremely educational field trip to which he and some 75 students from Pepperdine Uni- versity, ventured. On this particular trip, the students, under the direction of Monseur Cousteau, observed ocean life in its mos t unspoiled and quite refresh- ing form. The tremendous slides included various forms of fish life, coral, island structure, and glorious sunsets ... as well as the natives on the island. Jean Mi- chele Cousteau ' s presentation sparked a large interest among the many West High students attending. Freecloud, a sensational music group, consisting of John Newman, Mark Gor- don, Larry De Gasperin, Don Galbraith, Sam Sorensen, Jim Gross, and George Gagliandi, gave an exceptional lunch- time concert on March 20th. The repe- toire was made up of works by the one and only David Bowie. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the exquisite move- ments, choreographed by Mark Gordon and John Newman, which included a jump off a high-rise stage by Don the Leaper Galbraith whilst playing a gui- tar. This was the most largely attended lunch activity of the year, and the audi- ence deemed it the most successful. Top: Jean Cousteau prepares slides for showing. Schoolroom Setting for Spring Play Lei it be a challenge means you ' re stuck with it, Inter- personal relationships , means a fight, File in alphabetical order means to throw it away, and It has come to my at- tention means you ' re in trouble. No, this isn ' t a normal chaotic day at West. Actually, it ' s the mess that the new teacher, Slyvia Barrett (Suzanne Ste. Marie), finds herself in on her first day of teaching school in the play, UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE. Slyvia soon seems to be fighting a loosing battle when she compulsively tries to defend a rude and difficult young man named Joe Ferone (Jon Cohen). She becomes involved in a romance, a confrontation with a disciplinary administration, and most of all, with the unex- pected problems of her students. v 3.SL . . .
