Homecoming Tradition Keeps With the Times 1974 ' s Homecoming was traditional in every sence of the word, with the surprising exception of a Homecoming King. Senior Class President Alex Gaitan decided that in order to modernize the event, crowning a king along with a queen, would be more in keeping with today ' s values. The idea received initial criticism, but in the end most everyone liked the idea. The crowning took place during halftime at the West vs. Santa Monica game. The traditional parade of MG ' s was led by last year ' s Queen Judy Smith. The five finalists were escorted by their fathers down a red carpet to the 50 yard line, where they stood nervously in front of an expectant crowd. To increase the suspense, the finalists were announced in reversed order. The King was to be announced during the dance after the game. Sandy Robbins, majorette, was selected as queen by the senior class. The finalists were selected by upper class members. The theme for the Homecoming dance was Under the Harvest Moon . Decorations included a scarecrow, harvest stocks, pumpkins, and stars everywhere. Heading the Decorations Committee was Kathy McAtee. Steve Codey, varsity center, was crowned West ' s first Homecoming King. Entertainment was provided by Free- hand who served up a variety of music, from soft rock to golden oldies . Warrior Week Its been an unwritten rule that the week before Hornecoming be a special time for promoting school spirit by involving students in unusual and quite often funny events. This Year ' s promoting was referred to as Warrior Week, which was very successful. Various activities included were a powderpuff football game, a special drawing which enabled ten lucky winners to eat lunch with the top ten Homecoming Court, a Spirit Stick contest, and a pie eating contest which could best be described as a pie fight. The events were not only fun for the participants, but for the onlookers as well, especially for those who were creamed at the pie ordeal. Top; Instant replay on the powderpuff game.
