Sophomores Top Ocean League Once again this years sophomores sparkled by acheiving an undisputed Ocean league Championship. The young Warriors blitzed their league opponents by an average of 22.5 points per game. Outstanding play was exhibited by Most Valuable Player and leading scorer, Pat Schmidt who was moved up to the Varsity for the last four games, Team Captain Mark Lawrence, second leading scorer and top de- fensive player, and Reggie Turman, the lead- ing rebounder. Guards Chuck Comeaux, Don Besner, and Jeff Keehn were great playmakers with Comeaux leading the team in shooting percentage by making 50 ' V of his shots. Coach Dabbs believes that several of his players will join Schmidt on the Varsity next year with the balance of the team and his strong team combining to make an outstanding Jun- ior Varsity. J. V. ' s Place Second in Ocean League The Junior Varsity Basketball team finished with a record of 6-4-0 in league action, putting the Warriors in Second Place in the Ocean League. Theirs was a frustrating and unusual season which saw the J.V. ' s lose ten out of their first 13 games and win ten of the next 13 games. The biggest win of the year was a 39-36 stall over Palos Verdes, who boasted an 18-1 record at the time. Leading scorers for West were Larry Montefu, who scored 25 points against Palos Verdes, Harold Beekhuizen who scored over 100 field goals, and Pete Ayotte and Pete Lawrence, who scored over 200 points each and who each had over 200 re- bounds. The team honors this year went to Pete Lawrence, Team Captain, Pete Ayotte and Pete Lawrence, Most Valuable Players, and Jim Mc- Ginty, Larry Montefu, and Bob Parvcna, Most Inproved Players. Coach Parks believes that the biggest accom- plishments made by the team at the end of the season were poise, patience and pride. Frosh Defeat Torrance Rivals This year ' s Freshman Basketball team broke even all the way around with a 12-12 season record and in Ocean League action they were 5-5, which put them in third place. In pre- league action, the Freshman finished fourth in the 16 team Leuzinger Tournament. West ' s own Steve Orr earned his way onto the All-Tournament Team. The season was high- lighted by an upset over league champions, the Rolling Hills Titans, 22-3. Outstanding statistics were made by Jim Reece who grabbed 238 rebounds for the year, George Stablein who shot 75 c c from the foul line, and Dave Crespin who shot 45 ( 7 from the floor. The biggest highlight of the year was the Freshman ' s rec- ord against the Torrance schools. The Warriors finished the year with a perfect 6-0 record over all the Torrance schools. Jim Reece and Steve Orr shared honors for the Most Val- uable Player award.
