Mark Morrow The J.V. team was undefeated gping into the final meet of the season. Team leaders were Steve Zwicker, Mike Franz, Dan Kar- dash, Joe Velez, Tim Kinane, Pete Woertler, and Jay Powell, The J.V. ' s finished second in the Ocean League. Steve Stout along with Darryl Coletto, Jim Herman, Den- nis Ledbetter, Jeff Keehn, and Mitch Hibbard led the Sophomores to second place in league action. Highlights of the Sophomor es ' season were a second place at El Camino, missing first by one point. They were one point short of second at Palos Verdes. The Sophomores scored an upset by beating Rolling Hills by one point. Coach Holtel thought the Sophomores did a great job in league finals . The Freshman came home with two runnerup championship team trophies at Westminster and Palos Verdes Invitationals. Two big wins over Hawthorne and Ingle- wood helped the Warriors take second place in the Ocean League. Outstanding runner Steve Orr was voted Individual Champion at the Westminister Invitational. Sup- porting Orr, and doing great jobs themselves, were Craig Hampton, Ron Percy, Tom Herman, Lonnie Jefferson, Scott Callihan, Jeff Horwick, and the rest of the Fresh- man team. Soccer Team Reaches CIF This years varsity soccer team boasted a fine 13-3-4 record throughout the pre-season and regular season play. The Warrior team tied for the championship of the extremely tough Western S occer League One highlight of the season was the Christmas Tournament West won the largest high school soccer tournament ever held in the United States by defeating such strong teams as Chino. Dominguez. Culver City, and Cathedral The Warriors were lead by team captain David Atkinson whose seven goals and numerous assists helped to turn the tide on many occasions. Pete Frederickson, who was unquestionably the most valuable player, lead the team with twenty-seven goals and six assists. The defense was centered on sophomores Jim Brown, and Russell DeFord, who along with Tom Avoian. Brian Moore, and Steve Thomas allowed only twenty- six goals throughout the season. Following their First place tie in the Western League, the Warriors moved into CIF championship competition. Taking a bye in the first round, the varsity moved into the second round but were defeated, 4-2, by Cathedral. Coach Eaton said, Based on the fact that this years team started four sophomores and the fact that the junior varsity was almost entirely composed of sophomores, the future of West High soccer appears to be more than bright.
