Sophs Top Ocean League The Sophomore football team lived up to the expectations of all, as they completely dominated Ocean League action this year with a 5-0 record. Disappointed but not discouraged, the Sophomores started slowly, losing their first three games, but rallied with six consecutive wins. The Warriors outscored their league opponents 171 to 14 on their way to the champion- ship. The success of the team was a result of the dedication of all the players. Some of the outstanding players were quarterback Shawn Mun- son and halfback John Rolland who led the team in rushing offense. Mun- son was voted team captain and Rol- land was voted Most Valuable Player by the team. A superb offensive line was anchored by Tom Neal, an ex- cellent blocker, and end Mark Lawrence, the team ' s top pass receiver. On defense, tackle Ron Little and linebacker Dan Mclntire were the leaders in tackles. Greg Herring led the backs with seven interceptions. The kicking game was the strongest ever with soccer-style kicker, Pete Fredrickson. Pete broke all records in point after touchdowns, field goals, and kickoffs. Coach Dabbs and Coach Eaton both agreed that it probably was the best all around group of Sophomores to play at West. Frosh Better Than Record The season record of four wins and five losses is a very deceiving statistic when reviewing the 1971 Freshman Football team. The young Warriors had some very close games including the games against North and Bishop Montgomery where a blocked punt in each game made the difference. Other close ones were against Hawthorne and Culver City where one or two plays could have turned the tables. The freshman had a strong defense. Several of the defensive standouts were Jim Reece, middle linebacker, Steve Zak, strong end, Gary Mimura, guard, and the entire backfield of Mike Farrell, Scott Walker, and Frank Fidelli. This team also possessed an explosive passing offense. The offensive unit had one of the best freshman passing games in the area. The combination of quarterback Chuck Comeaux and end Steve Zak was good for eight touchdowns. Other key receivers were Frank Fidelli, Jim Reece, and Scott Walker. - Row One (top): Coach Bob Costa, Coach Tom Komp, Coach Mark Knox.
