Club participation highlights Pan American Day assembly Pan American Day is celebrated on April l4th in commemoration of the 1890 formation of the Pan American Union. At West High, the Pan American assembly sponsored by the Span- ish Club, under the supervision ot Mrs. Spooner, has been a special assembly for all language clubs. Each club chose a princess to serve on the court, and Spanish Club chose a queen, in ad- dition to a princess. Susan Lund presided as this year s queen with Norma Gaddis as princess at Latin Club, Emilie Bailey as princess ot French Club, Elaine Porter as princess at German Club, and Sally King as princess of Spanish Club. The Master ot Ceremonies, Dan Peel, then took over and introduced each club as they put 28 on a skit. Latin Club's skit was a style show ot what the typical girl in Rome would have worn. French Club put on a skit ot two American tour- ists in a French restaurant. German Club put on a television program ot commercials. Entertain- ment followed with Nancy Mueller and Betty West doing a calypso dance, Donna Swanson sang an Italian song andthe Dance Band played a few songs. The gym was colortully decorated with streamers and maps ot the country each lan- guage club represented in the colors at the courts dresses. Pink tlowers lined the white path on which the court entered and lett the gym. This years Pan American assembly was one ot the best tor entertainment and color.

The West High School Band has completed another success- ful year under the direction of Mr. Bissel. The members of the band and their director worked hard to bring additional fame to West High. One of the first tri- umphs of the year occured at the Days of '49 Parade where the band won sweepstakes and first place of bands. Another honor bestowed upon the ba nd was being asked to be the host band at the pro-football game in Se- attle. The band also participated in the Band Day at the University of Washington, and was seen in many parades, namely the Daf- fodil Parade in Tacoma, in which they took first place, the Veter- ans' Day, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day parades here in Bremerton. Besides the many activities, the band found time to enter the Western Washington Music Educators Association Band Concert, provided halftime shows at all football games and the pep band music for all bas- ketball games, and they also played in the annual Christmas concert, Swing concert, and the Spring concert. They also played in the Armed Forces concert in conjunction with the East High School. With only six seniors graduating from this year's band, they should certainly live up to their nickname of The Pride of Puget Sound next year. Clau- Orchestro members ore This year the orchestra was quite active in civic attairs, and in addition it did something that no orchestra in the history of West High has been able to do-it went to a contest. It played to tull orches- tra numbers and one string number and received an excellent rating. At the Christmas concert the orchestra ioined with the Modernaires to do T'vvas the Night Be- tore Christmas. Several members accompanied the choir and Modernaires in their rendition ot Vi- valdis Gloriaf At the spring concert, held in late spring ot this year, it played selections from 'South Pacific. Several students who tound it impossible to take orchestra as a class helped out in the various pertormances throughout the year. These, with the many treshmen, made a tairly large orchestra and since the caliber ot the individual was high, the cali- ber ot the group was also high. Mr. Bissell is losing only tour seniors this year, but with the many tine under-classmen already in the orchestra plus those expected trom the junior high, the orchestra should continue in its celebrated manner.
