This year marks the completion and use of the stadium, and therefore we dedicate the 1948 Cat Log to those former students for whom the memorial is named. Entering a Homecoming float, the assembly, a booth in the carnival, climaxed by an exchange visit with a Victoria, British Columbia, High School are some of the things that have kept the National Honor Socety members busy. Probably the most important project was sponf soring the Cat Cave, where members sold school supplies to the students. HONOR STUDENTS Named Valedictorian of the class of 1948 was Douglas Patterson, while the honors of Saluta- torian went to James McArthur. These two most outstanding students were chosen in April to lead their class in scholastic honors. Douglas .has been very active in many school organizations, holding the position of business mana er for two ears and Editor in Chief of g y Y , , the Lair besides being an outstanding student. ------' He also participated in the Benjamin Franklin oratorical contest and is an active memher of the Delvlolay. James, EditorfinfChief of the Cat Log, has proved his abilities in the fields of chemistry, music, and oratory and has won a scholarship to Reed College, as well as honorable mention in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. and a certificate of distinguished performance in thc Front Row: Voss, Thorson, Caven. The Torch Honor Society is just what its name implies, an honorary club open to any student who maintains a high grade average. To be eligible, a sophomore needs twenty' eight grade points, a junior, fiftyfsixg and a senior, eightyffour. It is the purpose of the club to provide a goal toward which all stu- dents may strive. Meetings held once a month provided an hour of educational entertain' ment. The Society took part in many worth while activities during the year, two of which were the shrubbery project and the Girls' Club Carnival. The float which the members entered in the Homecoming Parade won Hrst prize. The club helped to instigate a new Torch Honor Society at Fife High School, Pierce County. Other projects were an afterfschool dance, a Christmas party for Welfare children, presents for the orphanage at Poulsbo, and a Country Fair to Benefit the World Youth Fund. The statefwide HifY Conference was held in early February, at Bremerton, with nineteen representatives from all parts of Washington attending. The Debate Club's chief aim is to teach students rhetoric and formal debate procedure. A credit is given in debate, and at the end of the year one receives a school emblem. Since the beginning of debate season in the fall, the club has busily applied itself to the year's.debate question, that of the Federal Government's requiring arbitration in basic American industries. The Debate Club attended the state tournament at the College of Puget Sound in May, in which most schools of the state participated. VIA 0911 Front Row: Olson, Wills, Christiansen, Avery, Hayes. Because facilities are so limited, these plays are not open to the public but are given to audiences composed of friends invited by members of the class. One act lays and radio plays, some of which will be presented on the High School Hour over KBRO, are also scheduled for study. The Retailers Club began a very successful year with an initiation of new members at the Sheridan Park Recreation Center. The officers were installed at a very impressive formal ceremony October ll, followed by a dance. The Retailers have a three' fold purpose-participation in civic, school, and social life. The club took the responsibility of securing 75 windows for school displays for American Education Week and supervised the arrangement of the displays. The club helped the Lair Staff sell Lair cards and helped with the project to send the band to the Rose Festival at Portland by selling almost S100 worth of tickets. The Retailers were honored by having Pauline Gleason as a Princess for Homecoming. They entered a float in the parade with the slogan Shop Bremerton, Build Bremerton. Several parties and dances were held throughout the year. Our club is a member of the Washington State Retailers Association and Barbara Book is a representative and member of the board of governors. The majority of our club attended the State Convention in Bellingham in Bellingham in April. Page 66 4' -- RETAILERS CLUB LORRAINE SANBORN PAULINE GLEASON X o , . ,.v,gx U I 'WML .
