V. !. if i ff X . 1 .1 DEDICATIO lt has been said that the foundation of every State is the education of its Youth. Modern youth knows that not only formal education is important but active participation of students in activities in which they can cooperate make projects a success. Student government is a startling example. Our progress is made by the student council, stu- dent elections, our student forums, and co- ordination with the various clubs within our student body. Such is school life in a De- mocracy, to which We dedicate this annual. -PEGGY BOURGETTE s 1 E 2 15 E 'Q K , , EQ, 'X F E A gf: ' ' Q Q 1 ' ' 'Vwf5?f.l - ki K W . ff , .- Q 4 if 'iw 55 i 75 E gig As Q ff. gg i fi? The individual stu- dent has no choice as to what he shall study. In the fields of history, economics, civics, and litera- ture, young people may study only what is prepared for their consumption by the official propaganda departments with brazen disregard for truth and facts. We in the United States consider school life on such terms to be little short of slavery. We cherish the opportunity to choose the lines of work and activities which appeal to each of us. Our schools regard as important objectives the acquisition of the aesthetic and cultural heritage of the race. We do not have the desire to place the entire emphasis of the schools upon the strict utility of training in vocational skills and training for military service. We believe that under our system we secure a more free and full development of our native abilities and powers and we encourage initiative and poise and self confidence. Y -- 11' , 1 AW -l V National defense and democracy are paramount issues in America today. Every member of the faculty has attempted to impart that intangible something which con- strains every student to love and appreciate his country and its institutions far above that of any other. We hold to a philosophy of the spirit which postulates that attitudes and appreciations are fundamentally more important than mere visible forms and creeds. We have attempted to delegate to you students as much participation in school govern- ment as you are capable of absorbing. You as students have accepted this responsibility and have thereby received very valuable training in the tenets of democracy. We have given you a vast field of information so that you may be able to intelligently reach sound conclusions. We contend that by imparting these experiences we have contributed that fundamental factor which will be a most valuable factor in National defense. As dazed Freshmen they put on a very good competitive assembly. As knowing Sophomores they decided to have sweaters of their own and the colors maroon and gray. As high and mighty Juniors they put on a fashion prom which was an acknowledged success. - As experienced Seniors put on their annual Senior Play which was a mystery play.
