Boys’ State Good Citizen The coveted Boys’ State Award given by the American Legion was won by Dan Palmer. Boys’ State is an objective citizenship school in which boys gain true conception of the ideals and objec- tives, and the function and operation of govern- ment. Dan attended Boys’ State at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, June 21-27. Dan also won the Good Citizen Award pre- sented by Mrs. W. P. Oberlin of the Joseph Mc- Dowell Chapter of D.A.R. He is presently active with art, as a member of the FALCON STAFF. He i s the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel M. Palmer of Mills River Voice of Democracy Miss Brenda Harris was the winner of the West Henderson High Voice of Democracy contest. This project is sponsored annually by the V.F.W. Post 5206 and its Ladies Auxiliary. This year the theme for the essay was ““Freedom — Our Heritage”. As a winner she received a $25.00 Savings Bond. Brenda is a senior business student and is an active member of the “Hendersonville Christian Youth Ranch”’. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe S. Harris of Fletcher.

HALL OF FAME District DECA Sweetheart On November 4, 1970 Kay Heaton won the title of Miss Deca at the Deca Convention. She competed along with twenty-six other girls who were graded On poise, speaking, color balance, make-up, personality and figure. They could score up to two hundred points. Kay received 196. She is now entitled to travel to Charlotte in April of 1971 to compete for the state title. Kay is presently active as secretary of the Deca Club. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Arnold Heaton of Hender- sonville. Civitan Youth Conference Tim Youell was chosen to attend Civitan Youth Conference for one week at Dungraggon Inn. There were delegates from many areas and activ- ities designed with emphasis on “un- derstanding through participation and involvement”’. Tim is presently active with the FALCON STAFF, Key Club, Beta Club and French Club. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. For- rest D. Youell of Hendersonville.

Betty Crocker Award Sandra Searcy Huntley was the win- ner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award. This award is given to the senior girl who places highest on a written examination given in the fall. She is currently active with Tri- Hi-Y and is the associate editor of The Blue Streak. Sandra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Searcy of Balfour. State Homemaker’s | Degree Miss Kathy Morris has fulfilled the requirements of the Future Home- makers of America and is now a candi- date for her State Homemaker Degree. She has already received her Junior and Chapter Degrees. The State Degree will be awarded at the annual state convention in April. Kathy is currently active as Pres- ident of F.H.A., Parliamentarian of F.T.A., Beta Club, the FALCON STAFF and Dramatics Club. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loster Morris of Mills River.
