Dentin ee ae ee Trying Times Cheerleading is not making more noise to add to the already present confusion. Cheerleading is trying to lead the fans in an organized effort to boost the team. In return for the en- thusiasm shown by the fans, the ath- letes are willing to give 100 per cent to a victory for West. The cheerleaders have possibly the hardest job in the school, cheering for approximately forty-eight ballgames — ten football, thirty-six basketball, and two Tournament games — plus numerous wrestling matches and pep rallies. Pre-season practices account for many sore muscles, aching bodies, abnormal perspiration, headaches in preparation for the coming season. But this is only part of the many hours put into the perfection of organized cheers and appropriate chants and songs that the fans will respond to.

Why JLV.’s? BECAUSE... ... because these young men need a chance to experience bruised arms and legs, blackened eyes, cracked shins and bloody noses before they play Varsity football. These boys learn how to hit, when to hit, and how to run for a touchdown that will give them a victory. By learning these techniques, next year’s Varsity squad will benefit. These young men also offer competition for the older ones by striving to be good athletes. They experience losing, one of the harshest rules of competitive sports, and winning, the reward for hard work. They learn to aim for higher goals of good sportsmanship and sincere dedi- cation for the coming years. ng ; wi gk ge SS
