CIVITAN CAMP Miss Mary Guice was chosen to attend the Carolinas’ Civitan Youth Conference during July 1969. The delegates arrived at Duncraggen Inn, to spend a week of discussion on the problems facing Amer- ica. Discussion groups were held on the topics of: today’s racial situation, the new morality, and the generation gap. The purpose of this conference was to encourage teens to take an active part in solving our country’s problems. 96 KEY CLUB DISTRICT LT. GOVERNOR Malcolm Roberts was elected lieutenant governor of District I — West by a caucus of delegates at the District Convention. He is a member of the District Board and carries on the business of the Carolina’s District. Malcolm is active in the Key Club, Monogram Club, FCA, and has lettered in sports. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Burnice Roberts.

DAR AWARD During the 1969 Awards Assembly, Miss Nancy Hall received the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, for honesty, patriotism, and citizenship. Nancy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Hall. She is active in Monogram Club, Keyettes, and cheerleading. Also during the 1969 Awards Assembly, Miss Pam Baldwin received the Good Citizen Award presented by Mrs. Dorothy T. Hogan of the Joseph McDowell Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. This award is given on the basis of leadership, service, patriotism, and dependability. Receiving this award entitles the winner to compete for a scholarship. Pam is an active member of Beta Club and Keyettes. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION PROGRAM Last summer, Miss Linda Newman attended the National Science Foundation Summer Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Linda was one of sixty rising seniors selected from the eastern United States to participate in a six week study program. While there, she studied mathematics, computer science, biology, and astronomy. 95

HOMEMAKER OF TOMORROW Miss Frances Smith won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award. This award is given to the senior girl who places highest on an examination which is taken in the fall of the senior year. Winning this award, makes Frances eligible for one of 102 college scholarships. Frances has taken active part in community projects and currently serves as vice-president of the West Henderson FHA. She is also an active member in Beta Club. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY Miss Karen Kline was chosen by a faculty committee as the West Henderson winner of the Voice of Democracy Contest. She was third place winner in the 17th District VFW Contest. Karen is the daughter of Mr. Hugh D. Kline. She is active in Pep Club and is secretary of the Keyette Club. 97
