The study of a foreign language is important 1. because it adds to cultural knowledge and contributes to the understanding and appreciation of other people. A student who travels to Canada, Louisiana, or per- LANGUAG E i haps Europe would enjoy knowing French that is spoken in those places. : For the student of Latin, the work becomes a DEPARTMENT ¥ little more intricate each day, so the pupil is led always on in acquiring knowledge. Like life, the learning of Latin brings daily problems. The lan- guage demands exactitude, a needed essential in one's living. The beauty and utility of our English words 1s enhanced by knowledge of Latin parents. COMMERCIAL | Be The faculty supervises the acquisition of a DEP ART MENT skills that will enable students to obtain in- teresting and profitable careers in business. Emphasis is placed on skills, techniques, and attitudes that the businessman looks for when hiring an office worker, through the use of business papers, forms, and other instructional devices.

The specific function of the English department at West Henderson High School is to instill in the minds of the students the fundamentals of the English language. The classes are arranged for students who are seeking to attain a higher educa- tion, as well as for students who plan to begin work soon after the completion of high school. It shelves both fiction and non-fiction books that are the age- level of the users, and it is an easily accessible research center for the students. The library has enlarged in volume consider- ably in the pasttwo years, and plans are being made to expand it even more in the future. Miss Jordan, the librarian, is aided by thirteen library assistants.
