OnSeptember 2, 1960, the halls of West Henderson High School echoed the voices and laughter of its first occupants, five hundred and twelve students from four communities. In a very short time, these students blended into one group. This first year, we chose blue, white, and red for the school colors. The Falcon, known for its beauty and strength in flight, was selected as the mascot. An activity bus was securedfor the school. During that first year, a faculty member and her husband, Mr. Mrs. Stillman Mackay, Jr. composed the ' 'Alma Mater. See ea eee On August 26, 1961, the halls of West High filled with a larger student body and faculty. Faces, familiar with West High, saw many new faces. These students were not the only new things added to the campus. Foot- ball was on its way to becoming an active sport. Lights and temporary bleachers were erected for the stadium; it was just a modified field, but we were proud. Weknew that it was the beginning of finer things. The same year, we were visited by a group of educators, who, after a thorough examination, feltthat West High, on its own merits, should be- come an accredited high school. The year passed onward... On August 27,1962, the halls of West High, sparkling and proud, 7% CONCESSIONS received six hundred and thirty-two students and twenty-five faculty § —— sec members. During the summer interested people in the community had begun working on the Boosters Club's project, the building of one of the finest high school football stadiums in North Carolina. Concrete bleach- ers, a brickpress box and concession stand, and a hurricane fence were built to withstand the wear of weather andtime. The sports' program was growing by leaps and bounds. Sports was notthe only area that had been progressing. Thanks to the generous contributions of many people, the library increased from 3,000 volumes in 1960-'61 to 4,700 volumes in 1962-'63. Also new equipment was added to the science, mathematics, language and social studies de- partments. The Key Club was established in the year 1962, Student publications were also prospering. The HIGH FLIER in 1962-'63 was being published six times per year as compared with five times in 1960 -'61. In only three years, THE FALCON increased its number of pages from one hundred to one hundred and thirty-six, and in 1962-'63 plans were made to customize the cover. Yes, we have hadprogress in the '60's, and we will continue to do so as long as our students have faith and continue to show their remarkable spirit and enthusiasm toward our Alma Mater.
