Presented By The Students Of WEST HENDERSON HIGH SCHOOL Route 5, Hendersonville, North Carolina CONTENTS Administration and Staff Page 7 Athletics page 73 CIN A UL 2 WO asia Pay ot tte i it ee tie a GHGS | DEDICATION To Mr. L. C. Youngblood... Gratefully we recognize your unfailing efforts in the interest of progress for us, the students of West Henderson High School. You have remained in the back ground; yet, you have been a silent, modest inspiration. For many years, Mr. Youngblood has served as chairman of the Henderson County Board of Education. Hehas beena life-long resident of and an inspiration to the Fletcher community. Although Mr. Youngblood lives in the West Henderson High School district, he has expressed unbiased interest for all schools and individual students throughout the county. OnSeptember 2, 1960, the halls of West Henderson High School echoed the voices and laughter of its first occupants, five hundred and twelve students from four communities. In a very short time, these students blended into one group. This first year, we chose blue, white, and red for the school colors. The Falcon, known for its beauty and strength in flight, was selected as the mascot. An activity bus was securedfor the school. During that first year, a faculty member and her husband, Mr. Mrs. Stillman Mackay, Jr. composed the ' 'Alma Mater. See ea eee On August 26, 1961, the halls of West High filled with a larger student body and faculty. Faces, familiar with West High, saw many new faces. These students were not the only new things added to the campus. Foot- ball was on its way to becoming an active sport. Lights and temporary bleachers were erected for the stadium; it was just a modified field, but we were proud. Weknew that it was the beginning of finer things. The same year, we were visited by a group of educators, who, after a thorough examination, feltthat West High, on its own merits, should be- come an accredited high school. The year passed onward... On August 27,1962, the halls of West High, sparkling and proud, 7% CONCESSIONS received six hundred and thirty-two students and twenty-five faculty § —— sec members. During the summer interested people in the community had begun working on the Boosters Club's project, the building of one of the finest high school football stadiums in North Carolina. Concrete bleach- ers, a brickpress box and concession stand, and a hurricane fence were built to withstand the wear of weather andtime. The sports' program was growing by leaps and bounds. Sports was notthe only area that had been progressing. Thanks to the generous contributions of many people, the library increased from 3,000 volumes in 1960-'61 to 4,700 volumes in 1962-'63. Also new equipment was added to the science, mathematics, language and social studies de- partments. The Key Club was established in the year 1962, Student publications were also prospering. The HIGH FLIER in 1962-'63 was being published six times per year as compared with five times in 1960 -'61. In only three years, THE FALCON increased its number of pages from one hundred to one hundred and thirty-six, and in 1962-'63 plans were made to customize the cover. Yes, we have hadprogress in the '60's, and we will continue to do so as long as our students have faith and continue to show their remarkable spirit and enthusiasm toward our Alma Mater. The classes are arranged for students who are seeking to attain a higher educa- tion, as well as for students who plan to begin work soon after the completion of high school. LIBRARY CLUMPS Oe Mit. “tht ZL Gy) , tony bia TTD) er irate ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The purpose of the library at West Henderson High School is to serve the students. It shelves both fiction and non-fiction books that are the age- level of the users, and it is an easily accessible research center for the students. The library has enlarged in volume consider- ably in the pasttwo years, and plans are being made to expand it even more in the future. Miss Jordan, the librarian, is aided by thirteen library assistants. The study of a foreign language is important 1. because it adds to cultural knowledge and contributes to the understanding and appreciation of other people. A student who travels to Canada, Louisiana, or per- LANGUAG E i haps Europe would enjoy knowing French that is spoken in those places. : For the student of Latin, the work becomes a DEPARTMENT ¥ little more intricate each day, so the pupil is led always on in acquiring knowledge. Like life, the learning of Latin brings daily problems. The lan- guage demands exactitude, a needed essential in one's living. The beauty and utility of our English words 1s enhanced by knowledge of Latin parents. COMMERCIAL | Be The faculty supervises the acquisition of a DEP ART MENT skills that will enable students to obtain in- teresting and profitable careers in business. Emphasis is placed on skills, techniques, and attitudes that the businessman looks for when hiring an office worker, through the use of business papers, forms, and other instructional devices. i Ww bd AIMS OF SCIENCE To make one feel at ease in a scien- tific world. To add to one's happiness. To contribute some or much to man's health, comfort, and long- evity. To stimulate thought and satisfy curiosity. To promote peace and understand- ing among all nations of the world, by providing channels of universal communication. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MATH DEPARTMENT SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Social Science Department strives to give the students an appreciation of the world in which they live through a knowledge of the past and the present. In order to possess this know- ledge, students must understand the development of their country and the advantages which they enjoy as citizens of that country. It is, therefore, the aim of the Social Science Department to in- still this knowledge and to inspire students as they learntheir role as citizens of the commun- ity, the nation, and the world. History teaches that man has been able to master practically everything except himself, so in this realm, he has to look to his Creator for guidance. Therefore, the Social Science Department should also inspire students to send their roots deep into the soil of life's enduring values. The Mathematics Department tries to meet the learning needs of the student by helping the student to see the relationship of mathematics to other areas of his work, by stimulating logical and scientific think- ing, by enabling the student to acquire knowledge of the facts of mathematics and allied subjects. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Home Economics is education for living. We would have our pupils learn from Home Economics the answers to the following: How shall we care for our bodies ? How shall we rear our children ? How shall we work together ? How shall we live withour fellow man? How shall we play ? We fully agree with journalist, educa- tor, andwriter, Dr. Will Durant, who said, There can be no fulfillment of life's ulti- mate purpose without a successful mar- riage and a good family life. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT The public schools in America are provided : to help each individual develop to the limit of bs 3 his abilities. Courses are offered in schools A that will help boys and girls identify their per- ae sonal well-being with the welfare of society. at, Vocational agriculture courses are pro- a vided in high schools for boys who havea special é interest in agriculture and want to develop abil - i ities that will helpthem make worth-while con- tributions to society. Ric HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Physical education is an important part of the school curriculum. We learn co-opera- tion, co-ordination, fitness, and sportsmanship through physical activity. We hope to obtain enjoyment, knowledge, and skills, in activities that we can enjoy now and later in life. Health teaches us about the human body-- its functions and needs; how to care for this wonderful machine, the body, and some of the common malfunctions and causes. We learn how to become mentally and physically alert and try to develop a sound mind in a sound body. acosmenions wma Ee + wesc eastees,” “OS ES 1962 co “SSS RT aa JUNIOR - SENIOR COMMENCEMENT 1962 Find it Fast in the Yellow Pages Udvertisements Compliments of BOWER'S STORE Brevard, North Carolina BROWN'S AMOCO STATION Brownlow Gilliam Phone OX 3-9158 443 Kanuga St. Flowers For All Occasions COLLINS FLORIST 435 No. Church Street Phone OXford 3-7570 Hendersonville, North Carolina FLETCHER PHARMACY Registered Pharmacists PRESCRIPTIONS A SPECIALTY Phone MU 4-6241 Quay H.
