The elements of success in the production of livestock de- pend in a large measure on the ability to know and to select animals that are good feeders and breeders. No two animals are exactly alike. Variations always occur. Without these variations, improvement in livestock would be impossible. The constructive breeder is usually the one who can make selections that take advantage of these variations. Such a breeder selects for breeding purposes those individuals that more nearly approach the ideal animal whichhehas in mind and which he hopes some day to produce.
