After endless hours of contemplating, we had only a few suggestions. One of these stood out among all the others, - Mr. Marlow had often spoken of our school as being on “the hill . This was where the idea of Life on the Hill , fe oS 1962 annual, actually originated, The members of the Falcon Staff hope that you like our theme, and that it will be one which you will long remember and enjoy. SENIOR “LIFE ON THE HILL” One hundred and fourteen proud seniors registered for the last time at West Henderson on August 26, 1961, We were nearing the end of our journey through high school. We watched the days, weeks, and months hurriedly passing. Dean Sumner was elected President of the student body. We had our last football game and basketball game. We were measured for rings and then for Caps and gowns. Soon we were able to see the end of our life at West High. The title of Seniors had placed much responsibility on us. We began to evaluate what we had gained. We had gained an education that would lead us into college, into jobs, and eventually into marriage. We had gained many new friends among the students and faculty, Carroll Allen Danny Ammons Carol Anderson Shirley Andrews Danny Austin Minuard Bailey Doris Banning Jeri Baynard Sandra Bell W ayne Bell English Class Marlon Reddingfield Carolyn Bell Melba Bentley Judy Bishop Thomas Bright Johnny Byrd Steve Blackwell Danny Bordner Jimmy Brannon Earl Brevard Mary Brooks David Brown Jimmy Caimes Paul Callahan Priscilla Biddy Ronnie Brevard Arnold Bryson Madeleine Campbell Margaret Cantrell Judy Ann Case ee Delores Cathey Earl Clay 2. — Shirley Clayton Donald Cox Priscilla Crisp Roy Cunningham Otis Dean Barry Dillard United States History Class Jim Darnell Calvin Bud Day Charles Ducker Dewena Fowler Frances Garren David Greene Jackie Duncan Ronnie Emory Freddie Fowler Carolyn Franklin Frances Gash Becky Gilreath John Harms Elaine Hefiner Evan Flynn Tommy Franklin Richard Gordon Carolyn Hensley Roy Hensley Janet Holbert Vivian Hollingsworth Judith Holt Louise Holtzclaw Harold Houk Vera Lee Howell Ray Huggins Pauline Laughter Mildred Livingston Chemistry Lab Linda Kuykendall Randall Lanning David Marshall Shirley McCarson Sandra Miller Jimmy Owens Mary Maxwell Ernest McCall Jimmy M cCrary Teresa McGraw Otis Moore Deena Morris Patsy Praytor Kenneth Redden Rebecca McCarson Helen Meece Wilma Nash Nadine Reese Jean Reese Betty Mae Rhodes Tt SERaemanes” Jo Leen Riddle Nancy Russell Ann Scruggs Rebecca Sensing UNIOR Julie Mae Sitton Don Sitton Larry Smith Robert Smith Juniors in typing. Making plans for the Junior-Senior, JUNIOR “LIFE ON THE HILL” We, the one hundred and nineteen juniors of.1961-1962, once green sophomores are now rising seniors. We have passed the halfway mark in our high school career. Our class has pro- duced many leaders thus far. Through the efforts of our class, we have sponsored a Christmas Dance, a Valentine's Dance, and a sensational Junior-Senior, banquet. From our ambitious class, we have placed three cheerleaders on the squad and five players on the varsity basketball team. Juniors have also been very outstanding on the newly organized football team. We also have the distinction of being the smallest and the smartest junior class in our school's history. We are looking forward to the happiest and most profitable year of our high school career asonly a short distance remains before we reach the end--and the beginning of a new life. The remaining days will be filled with studying, extra-curricular activities, and preparing ourselves for the future. We have madea good record, so let us keep it, and make the class of '63 the best yet! % se aerate cas, i sf oe eA eee os See ee a - : SOPHOMORE Kathy Alexander David Allen Evelyn Allison Tlene Allison Nancy Allison Sue Anderson David Austin Mayo Bagwell Eva Baldwin Earl Ballard Avalina Barnwell Doris Barnwell Jimmy Barnwell Robert Barnwell Terry Beddingfield Yvonne Beddingfield Tresha Bell Ronald Bishop Margaret Blackwell CLASS James Breneman Pat Brown Carol Bryson Sally Bryson Clara Buckner Norma Jean Burnett David Byrd Joe Boyd Judy Cabe Doris Cannon Dorothy Carroll Carol Cely Wade Chastain Johnny Couch Leonard Cox Wilma Cox Linda Crisp Rodney Crossman Jerry Cunningham Christine Devore Bradford Dillard Priscilla Drake Bill Dwyer Wayne Ellis Roger Ellison SOPHOMORE Levi Fender James Franklin Richard Fox Odell Fugate Blaine Garren Rachel Garren Ray Garren Juanell Gash Johnny Gibbs Mary Glenn Ethelene Green Betty Guinn Dianne Hill Howard Holtzclaw Gregory Howard Steven Howard CLASS A shop class _ ny ‘ Fad he 3 Le PS as yee Mace Huggins Russell Hurte Olan Jarvis Scott Jarvis Doris Jane Jones Freeman Jones Eloise Kuykendall Danny Lancaster Larry Lance Sandra Lance Glenda Maxwell Volley Maxwell Faye McCall Terry McCarson Sherrill McCrary Brenda McGraw Roy Lee MclIntruff Sandra Merrill Larry Messer Marvin Metcalf David Miller Jimmy Milner SOPHOMORE Sharyn Moffitt Linda Nelson Frederick Noonchester Jesse Norton Rodney Orr Eugene Orren Larry Parker Doris Ann Parkinson Linda Pearson Amy Reid Joan Phillips Kenny Reynolds Wayne Reynolds Pat Rhymer Francie Roberts Beverly Robinson LASS Clyde Robinson Carolyn Rogers Joyce Roper Janet Singleton Sharon Smith Thaylon Stewart Barbara Suttles Randy Swicegood Bobby Taylor Rebecca Taylor Linda Ward Harry Warren James Watts Pauline Watts Florence Wheeler Mack Wiggins Gerry Wilkie James Wilkie James Worthy Mary Wright Brenda Wycoff Grady Youngblood Sophomores making use of their library period. A popular place for all students, SOPHOMORE “LIFE ON THE HILL” After one trying year and one short summer, we returned to West High as sophomores. We now consisted of one hundred and thirty-six, eighteen less than the one hundred and fifty-four that we had boasted of during our freshman year. We were no longer unfamiliar with the campus, the faculty, the students, and the Life on the Hill”, We found ourselves once again with confusing schedules, being moved from one class to another, and standing in line for lunch. All too soon things began to move into place. We were settling down for a year of working, studying, and playing. As the year moved toward the end, we began to realize that we were reaching the halfway mark in our years in high school. We felt that we had done well, Our boys showed themselves in football, basketball, and baseball, while the girls helped to cheer them on. Three of our girls worked hard for the basketball squad. Many struggled to make the honor roll, and many struggled just to get through the year. OD ere Steve Alexander Feo teagau ies FRESHMAN Larry B, Allison Larry W. The Block F Club of West Henderson was established in the fall of 1961 for the advancement of the athletic programs and the recognition of the students who have won letters by participating in one or more of the school's sports. The purpose of Block F is to promote better sportsmanship and further develop the sense of responsi- bility among its members through its service to West Henderson High School, The Block F Club was sponsored by Mr. Woodson. The major project for the year was the selling of Falcon shirts. The proceeds were used to finance a banquet in honor of all students participating in one of the school sponsored sports. By promoting these principles a student is better qualified to contribute to the happiness of themselves and others. In today's society there is a need for the concentrated development of character, the leadership qualities, the desire to achieve, and the efforts to serve in the above-average high school youth. The Beta Club is a recognition for a job well done by these students, There is no better way of learning leadership than through participation. Among other things members learn through active participation how to conduct and take part in a public meeting, to speak in public, to buy and sell cooperatively, to solve their own problems, finance themselves, and to assume civic responsibility. ( Algebra I Students at Freshman Orientation Freshmen Enjoying Lunch “LIFE ON THE HILL” In the fall of 1961 two hundred and twenty-nine excited freshmen reported to the West Henderson High School campus. We realized that we had before us four years. The thought was frightening. All of the upper classmen seemed to know exactly where they were going, Those first few days were hectic, but soon we began to learn what was expected of us, especially where we were supposed to be, and where we were not supposed to be. As the weeks moved along, we began to establish ourselves as a necessary part of the Life on the Hill , | We began to see our class members becoming a part of the football team and the basketball teams. We | began to actively participate in the dramatic, forensic, glee, and cheering clubs, the F.H.A, and the F, F,A, When Bill Worley was elected treasurer of the student body, the Freshman class was in its glory. | Studying, going to class, the library, activities--all of these made up our Life on the Hill , FRESHMAN i — NG GEE eR sik saiie® ERB Bee N a ATHLETICS Left to right: FIRST ROW: Dave Marshall, Bud Day, Carroll Riddle, Evan Flynn, Dean Sumner, Bill - Whitaker, Raymond Orr, Roy Cunningham, Ronnie Brevard, Kenny Reynolds, Harry Day; SECOND ROW: Mack Wiggins, Francie Roberts, Bennie Roberts, Scott Jarvis, Jimmy Owens, Jerry Cunningham, Bob Taylor, Steve Blackwell, Ken Young, Earl Brevard, Ronnie Ardron; THIRD ROW: Mr. Wilson, Coach; David Jones, Larry Day, Sammy Orr, Roy Morgan, Jimmy Jarvis, Ken Garren, Marlowe Huggins, Sammy Capps, Mr. Daye, Coach, FOOTBALL Captains: Dean Sumn er, Bill Whitaker. They are open only to boys regularly enrolled in high school and who are active members of F.F, A, Each contestant's speech must be the result of his own efforts. Members are Bobby Tucker, Dave Marshall, and Wayne Garren, LIVESTOCK JUDGING Livestock judging is the ability to appraise animal form. The elements of success in the production of livestock de- pend in a large measure on the ability to know and to select animals that are good feeders and breeders. No two animals are exactly alike. Variations always occur. Without these variations, improvement in livestock would be impossible. The constructive breeder is usually the one who can make selections that take advantage of these variations. Such a breeder selects for breeding purposes those individuals that more nearly approach the ideal animal whichhehas in mind and which he hopes some day to produce. Members are Jim Darnell, Mark Hol- bert, Roy Cunningham, and Joe Rhodes, Sponsor Sponsor Mr, John Hollamon Mr, Joe Francis LAND JUDGING Land judging contests have as their purpose the development of individual ability to rec- ognize and evaluate soil characteristics, to determine correct land use, and to choose proper land treatment, Good land, whether owned or rented by the farm operator, is essential to profitable agri- cultural production, The farmer's attitude toward his land, his knowledge of its characteristics, his understanding of its capabilities, and his ability to manage it properly affect its productivity, and, consequently, the income received by him. Farm boys are not born with such attitudes, knowledge, understandings, and abilities; they must acquire them through study and experience. General Electric’s Outdoor Lighting headquarters operation at Hendersonville, and other industries in Western North Carolina, have an unmet need for truly executive type secretaries. Outstanding skills in shorthand and typing are basic foundations. But additional “arts” in secre- tarial science — learned and acquired — are nec- essary for those who are seriously career-minded. Basic skills, aptitude, good grooming, initiative. grace and charm, along with the “common sense” facility for relieving her manager of much de- tail . . . . these are the requirements for the type secretary General Electric and others are seeking. For Both Men and Women — indeed, Gen eral Electric is looking for people who are pre- pared for the wide variety of assignments available in the electrical industry. Opportunities are open from time to time for machine operators, assem- blers, skilled maintenance men, tool and die makers, design engineers, secretaries, laboratory technicians, accountants, sales engineers, market- ing research experts, draftsmen, process engineers and others. If you would like to explore the possibilities of a career in the rapidly growing electrical industry — leading to assignments in Hendersonville or elsewhere with General -Electric — the Employ- ment Specialist in Employee Relations will be glad to talk with you. Call him for an appoint- ment at OXford 2-1431. Before applying, of course, you will want to con- sider very carefully your qualifications and willing- ness to invest your best efforts. General Electric job opportunities represent some of the finest available. Thus, the Department is looking for persons with exceptional qualifications in terms of education, experience, aptitude, and willingness to work. All candidates must have completed high school with a good record; and of course many positions require additional years of educa- tion and experience. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, creed, color or national origin. May you remember the days that you spent reaching new heights and making new friends, the faculty that guided you through school, and the way each day began and ended. May these pages help you to relive the football, basketball, and baseball games and the cheers and laughter that went with them. Variety is the chief characteristic of “Life on the Hill,” Seldom have the hours been filled with just a daily routine. Time has been givento developing character and poise through planning in clubs, for assembly programs, and for banquets. It has been the intention of the Falcon Staff to help you preserve a part of all these. We hope that you have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy the 1962 Falcon as much as we have enjoyed producing it for you. 116 Lv) Hatt ca a cen iN hlh lt WOR NNN HAAR i UA ia SS AMUN 1) it iy NANA na Ih ——— ——= i nt ANNAN H HA ae SS i i i —— ‘yh Hint AA i) Ht !
