Education in order to be effective must be continually in motion, changing, ad- justing and developing new ways to im- prove on our present program. What was good enough for our forefathers is not good enough for us,' for if we are to survive in the present world filled with automation, space ships and diferent ideologies, we must do some serious thinking. The placing of a satellite in orbit in Octo- ber, 1957, set up a chain reaction which has generated more positive movement toward the improvement of our educa- tional system than any other event or series of events in the history of our country or of the world. It is obvious that we have entered the era of science. Our entire culture is becom- ing more enmeshed in and dependent upon scientific developments. Equally significant to our progress in science is the need for better human re- lations and understanding of different cultures-for as surely as science has solved some of man's problems, it has also created other problems which were non-existent two years ago and which must now be given careful consideration. Problems are not solved by hysteria and emotion but by sound judgment and deter- mination. If we are to develop in our students the traits necessary to meet the challenge we must put into motion the machinery to evaluate our present system and to implement the necessary changes. If we are not willing to put forth the effort to meet that challenge, the scientific era may well bring to us chaos and despair rather than comfort and security. We must and we will meet that challenge. A MR. M. KIMBALL GARRISON Principal

The tornado tears its way across the countryside exercising its influence in a narrow erratic series of violent actions. It is soon dissipated and nature goes on her way only temporarily affected by the outburst. The glacier creeps along its chosen path and no single generation feels the effect of its motion. But the eject is there, and eventually the entire pattern of human life bows with nature to the result created by this measured, irrepressible movement. And so nature learns to adjust to movement: movement of the moment and movement of the ages. We humans must also learn to adjust. Each of us must experience for himself the results of action inspired by temper as well as the normal pattern of behavior. There are times when we must experience rapid and even violent motion in our lives. There are also times when we bear witness to the slow deliberate movement that so often brings a more stable and perma- nent achievement. Think carefully of the effort you are willing to put into your living as well as what you expect from it. Your decision will determine the kind of person you will be and the kind of world you will help create. There is excitement in the act of shoot- ing the rapids, but the joy, the sense of achievement, the sense of well being is found oniy as you sail the calm waters found after the rapids have been left behind. Superintendent of Schools Mr. Homer I. Smith
