Since time immemorial, motion has played a dynamic role in the advancement and survival of civilization Motion is progress. Starting with a crude wooden wheel, man, ever forging ahead, has reached the stage of complex vehicles and machines and continues on into the boundless regions of space. West Hempstead High School is flowing with constant mation Our scope of education has been widened to encompass a varied and greatly improved curriculum. Now the student can step out into the moving world, prepared for the ever constant motion of life. v iii! tg rw-J-1 wa. -nw Wvxg? ln WE 'rf am, ' '- 25:-4:4 vt N.. f '--mm. Q C 5 x 4 W ' , , . M. Mnlock xi' Q-uf ci, n. ii W' S N I 'N Af We Wish to express our thanks and appreciation to Mr. Daniel Sullivan, a man who has unselfishly given years of devoted service to the West Hempstead school district. Mr. Sullivan, With his cheerful at- titude and sympathetic nature, has Won the respect and admiration of both students and faculty. To this capable leader and Warm friend We dedicate the 1959 WESTERLY. DE DIC1-XTION' ADMINISTRATION The members of the Administration are those who oil the bearings, grease the surface, and preserve the structure of each whirling wheel in order that the West Hempstead school district may function smoothly. We thank them for maintaining the continuous forward motion of our school by their unselfish and unceasing work. I4 i .3 I mv The Board of Education: left to right: Mr. Gerhardtg Mr. Bennanatig M. Wein- stein, Presidentg Dr. La Pookg Mr. Zabriskieg Mr. Merrifield and Mr. Gough. - 7m 'ff .3 flu Af, R5 , 0 ' . P its m A far- is If x f f i '-mfgfytf 1w,a e - , Education in order to be effective must be continually in motion, changing, ad- justing and developing new ways to im- prove on our present program. What was good enough for our forefathers is not good enough for us,' for if we are to survive in the present world filled with automation, space ships and diferent ideologies, we must do some serious thinking. The placing of a satellite in orbit in Octo- ber, 1957, set up a chain reaction which has generated more positive movement toward the improvement of our educa- tional system than any other event or series of events in the history of our country or of the world. It is obvious that we have entered the era of science. Our entire culture is becom- ing more enmeshed in and dependent upon scientific developments. Equally significant to our progress in science is the need for better human re- lations and understanding of different cultures-for as surely as science has solved some of man's problems, it has also created other problems which were non-existent two years ago and which must now be given careful consideration. Problems are not solved by hysteria and emotion but by sound judgment and deter- mination. If we are to develop in our students the traits necessary to meet the challenge we must put into motion the machinery to evaluate our present system and to implement the necessary changes. If we are not willing to put forth the effort to meet that challenge, the scientific era may well bring to us chaos and despair rather than comfort and security. We must and we will meet that challenge. A MR. M. KIMBALL GARRISON Principal I i MR. MATHEW SLATTERY Assistant Principal MR. DANIEL SULLIVAN Assistant to the Principal 'l5 The tornado tears its way across the countryside exercising its influence in a narrow erratic series of violent actions. It is soon dissipated and nature goes on her way only temporarily affected by the outburst. The glacier creeps along its chosen path and no single generation feels the effect of its motion. But the eject is there, and eventually the entire pattern of human life bows with nature to the result created by this measured, irrepressible movement. And so nature learns to adjust to movement: movement of the moment and movement of the ages. We humans must also learn to adjust. Each of us must experience for himself the results of action inspired by temper as well as the normal pattern of behavior. There are times when we must experience rapid and even violent motion in our lives. There are also times when we bear witness to the slow deliberate movement that so often brings a more stable and perma- nent achievement. Think carefully of the effort you are willing to put into your living as well as what you expect from it. Your decision will determine the kind of person you will be and the kind of world you will help create. There is excitement in the act of shoot- ing the rapids, but the joy, the sense of achievement, the sense of well being is found oniy as you sail the calm waters found after the rapids have been left behind. Excited and spirited, proud of our class, taking advantage of this marvelous last year, filled with ,contrasting emotions, looking forward and looking back . . . Our 'first year-the awesome newness-strangers from di- versified places arrived at an incomplete shell. The confusion- carpenters hammering and drilling to finish the shell, and we, the first seventh graders struggling to acclimate ourselves. Gradually strangers became friends, worked together to build a class, to plan events, to leave traditions that would furnish the shell. Memories now: Of the Eight Ball, our first class dance, now an annual affairg of the ninth grade when the younger classes stood as we entered assembliesg of the tenth grade when we were slightly lost againg of greeting card sales-raising money for our beautiful Junior Prom and our eagerly anticipated senior year. Special Senior memories, unforgettable fun, adding two ex- traordinary and mischievous members to the class register- Harvey, the 6' 1-lf 2 pooka of our Senior play, and Rajah, the ram, '59's contribution to school spirit. Senior week-crazy hats and a class picnic, the Washington Trip???!!. and the luxurious senior ball. Finally the culmination of our six years in high school, June 21st-Graduation. Now striving forward, adding our dreams to humanity's, helping to direct a world's motion . . . It is one in which many changes occur in the student and the curriculum. The uncertain and anxious seventh grader soon overcomes his inhibitions and finds himself in eighth grade. More confident of himself, more stable in his studies he constantly moves onward, studying, forming new friendships and making a reputation for himself. Another year flies by and the student is at the end of his junior high school career. He is now an honored and respected person. The biggest move f ' - r ,. f Qwlifz. fi- . Once again the student is not certain of himself but he soon realizes that he is in a new and exciting world of studies, activities and revelations. The years continue to pass with unbelievable speed and the active eleventh grader discovers a sharp conflict between his desire to enjoy himself and the need to concentrate and to achieve scholastic abilities. It is with a joy touched with regret that the eleventh grader nears the end of his underclass- men days and moves onward to new experiences. E 4- . To the sports enthusiast, these changes are the very essence of the game. The excitement of a forward pass or a baseball hit high into the sky is electrifying to the fans in their seats. They applaud, laugh or mourn in a single surge of emotion. Power, too, is expressed in motion. A 250 pound fullback charging through the line is power in action. The basketball swishing through the net shows physical laws channelled into motion. And, demonstrating the sheer grace of motion, we see the cheerleader as she leaps high into the air. 5 , f , .W FKLQES' -, L 'vT'?2g. .
